Ep 35. Baseball is Back and so is Intentional Fatherhood with Michael Turner

My guest Michael Turner is a Navy veteran who has served our country around the world, giving him a unique perspective on life and culture. His backstory is one that includes fatherlessness as he was born and raised in a not so nice area of Los Angeles and never knew his biological father. However, Michael overcame the adversity in his early life by earning a college scholarship, worked full-time to put himself through law school, becoming a Harvard Business School alum. When Michael’s two daughters were toddlers, he looked for a book about dads, daughters, and our national pastime.  There weren’t any.  So, he wrote one, called “Baseball is Back”.  The book is a love letter to his girls and baseball, purchased by the Washington Nationals and Philadelphia Phillies. It’s received great reviews, including from Major League Baseball’s book blog, and can be purchased on Amazon at Baseball is Back.

Ep 34. Dad, How do I? With Rob Kenney

Rob was one of 8 kids and although his dad started well, he unfortunately decided to leave his family to raise themselves. Rob was raised fatherless and never really had a father there to teach him how to do the things a dad should show their kids growing up. Instead of being a victim, Rob decided to change things by raising two incredible children and being an engaged father and by helping other dads through his popular YouTube show: “Dad, how do I?”.  I thoroughly enjoyed my interview with Rob and have already learned many skills through his YouTube channel. Rob is an incredible husband, dad and his channel is a huge hit so go check it out at: Dad, how do I?

Ep 30. Get Out of Your Own Way with Dave Hollis

I’m so excited to share this interview with one of my digital mentors and someone I respect greatly, Dave Hollis. When Dave Hollis’s wife, Rachel, began writing her #1 New York Times bestselling book, Girl, Wash Your Face, he bristled at her transparency and her willingness to talk about such intimate details of their life. But when a looming career funk, a growing drinking problem, and a challenging trek through therapy battered the Disney executive and father of four, Dave began to realize he was letting untruths about himself dictate his life. As he sank to the bottom of his valley, he had to make a choice. Would he push himself out of his comfort zone to become the best man he was capable of being, or would he play it safe and settle for mediocrity?

In this interview we unpack some of the many peals found in Get Out of Your Own Way, and Dave tackles topics he once found it difficult to be honest about, things like his struggles with alcohol, problems in his marriage, and his insecurities about being a dad. Dave helps us see our own journeys more clearly as he unpacks the lies he once believed—such as “I Have to Have It All Together,” “Failure Means You’re Weak,” and “If They Doesn’t Need Me, Will They Still Want Me?”—and reveals the tools that helped him change his life.

In this episode, Dave offers encouragement, will challenge you, and even provides a few moments where we laugh at ourselves as fathers. Dave points the way for those of us who are, like he was, skeptical of self-help but wanting something more than status quo, and helps us drop bogus ideas about who we are supposed to be and finally start living as who we really are.

Ep 28. The Laws of Parenting with Tom Spiggle, Founder of Spiggle Law

When I heard Tom Spiggle‘s story of taking a career risk by starting his own law firm in order to gain control of his time and to be able to be there for his kids I knew he had to be on the show. Tom has a healthy and fresh perspective on fatherhood and parenting. Through his law firm, Tom is an advocate for parents who have suffered discrimination in the workplace. Tom has four children and for that reason spends a great deal of time at the firm he founded in 2009. When he had fewer children and more time, Tom managed to graduate with honors from the Georgetown University Law School, clerk for a judge, work at several private law firms and serve as an Assistant United States Attorney.
