This Is Uncomfortable

Danna and Katie

Some conversations are hard to have. Some questions are awkward to ask. Most of the topics that make us uncomfortable also address factors of our lives together that we really need to talk about. This will be uncomfortable. Settle in.

    Episode 19: Flat Earth Theories

This episode was originally recorded March 2022.

Note from Danna: Shortly after recording, I continued to read about flat earth theories and stumbled upon an explanation in a forum that conceded that while the Earth may not be flat, the emergence of flat earth theories and their growing popularity had more to do with the ability to think “outside the sphere” if you will. It’s like saying that the evidence that Earth is specifically spherical was an example of the way the public is pointed toward one specific point of view. I would still argue that usually the public is guided by general consensus, the accountability of peer review, and basic logic. However, I do respect the idea of wanting to be able to say, “Yes, okay, but what if", and what that thought exercise allows us to question in all parts of our life.

    Episode 18: Hallucinogens

We originally wrote and recorded this episode last September, and almost lost it to the time warp that was 2020. It was well researched and cited at the time, but honestly I closed that browser window months ago, and therefore don’t have the notes I promised mid-episode. If you have any particular questions or concerns about our sources please reach out for more information. This episode we talk about hallucinogenic drugs, mostly acid, mushrooms, DMT, and mescaline. We discuss the history and uses throughout cultures, and if you stick around through the second half you’ll hear about our personal experiences with hallucinogenics too. Thanks for listening!

    Episode 11: Depression and Anxiety

    CW: Depression, suicide, anxiety triggers.

This week we talk about our experiences with depression and anxiety. We discuss the different ways it manifests in our own lives, healthy and unhealthy coping mechanisms, and therapy. With therapy we try to remember our first sessions and what it’s like now, along with touching on access to mental health and what healthy coping mechanisms look like when you don’t have access to professional help.

Below are hotlines we refer in the podcast, and below those are some apps for mental health care in the digital era. Thank you for listening, and look out for us every other Wednesday on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and Stitcher!

These two websites are a wealth of mental health resources and numbers to call.

The apps Talkspace and Betterhelp were recommended to us by one of our favorite mental health advocates, Julia Valdez. Of them she said, “You can do a free trial with Betterhelp, and they offer discounted counseling services for those who need it. I used Talkspace for a while and loved it. Super convenient, and you can upgrade to video sessions, and even do couple’s counseling there.” If you need more resources like this, especially in California, please email us at [email protected], and we’ll share with you the lists we have.
