I almost forgot I was diabetic...
Spending a month on a Dexcom has been amazing. I was almost able to forget about type 1 diabetes completely. I just let control-IQ do its job and all I have to do is remember to carb count.   That was until I decided to snack on a bag of Popchips and it brought my whole world crashing down.   Listen to my podcast: www.anchor.fm/all4one  Twitter: @jamielowetv Insta: @jamielowetv  Snap.Chat: jamie.lowe  Email: [email protected]  For everything else check out my website www.jamielowe.co

Battling storm Eunice, while hypo, with a dodgy Libre sensor

    What fun I've had today...

It's been a crazy one and it doesn't help that since Thursday night my Freestyle Libre sensor has been acting up.

The trust we place in our tech was something I hadn't properly considered until I realised that I couldn't trust it any more.

Have you had an experience like this has your type 1 diabetes tech ever let you down?

How I'm fixing the worst blood sugar of my life

In this episode, after seeing some pretty shocking results I come up with a plan of action to improve my blood sugar after a difficult month.

The Freestyle libre, like many systems of its kind, offers a lot of data. If you care to look at it.

The fact is, I haven’t and don’t really log into my LibreView account and get an overview of how I’m doing.

I had a sneaking suspicion that it wasn’t going to be good. It wasn’t.

All through December and into the New Year I have been experiencing the worst blood sugar of my life.

Before lockdown changed everything type 1 diabetes wasn’t that bad for me. But after a period of diabetes burnout, I knew that my levels hadn’t been great.

But looking at the data you can start to see the areas where you are going wrong, and it can help you work out where you can be better.

So working out more, carb counting, and eating a better diet will all help me get to where I was. Hopefully.

    Consistency is key though! @jamielowetv

Diabetes made me freak out on the motorway

Type 1 diabetes doesn't often get in the way of much for me. Stubborn highs and annoying hypos are usually something I can brush off with ease and continue with whatever I'm doing.

However, last weekend whilst driving home to see my brother's new dog I couldn't seem to get my blood sugar to remain stable. I treated a near hypo at a service station, waited the right amount of time, and continued driving. But when my blood sugar began to drop again all of a sudden I didn't feel safe on the roads.

The only problem is the stretch of road I was on had no junctions, exits, or services for what felt like miles. Trapped on the motorway and slightly panicking here's what I did.

    Bouncing back from diabetic burnout...

But what I do know is that I’m ready to return. To come back, to get back to work.

I suppose I was in denial a lot of the time, I was lying to myself a little bit about how hard these past 24 months have hit me.   My way of dealing with things before 2020 is to dive into work, start a project, and do what I love.  However, I got to a point sometime in the summer last year when I realized that I was just going through the motions.

I wasn’t doing the best that I could do, and I wasn’t particularly proud of what I was making.  But that was all I could manage. Creating regular content for YouTube, podcast, TikTok, and working as a freelance journalist was just too much for me to handle.   Plus I was getting sick, really sick, the diabetes demons came for me hard so I had no choice but to reduce my workload.

I’ve spoken to doctors and other people and I think that I was suffering from a bit of burnout.   After reducing my workload and putting myself first things started to get better and slowly my health improved.

    Diabetes Treatments From Tarantula Venom?!

Dr Nigel Irwin has discovered that molecules found in spider venom have the potential to help us produce more insulin and lower blood sugar levels. His PhD student will now unpick exactly how these molecules could help the pancreas to work better, and test if they’re safe in mice. This could pave the way for new and improved treatments for people with Type 2 diabetes, which could help to lower their risk of complications.
