I'm Not What I Do: The Truth About My Identity (season finale)

As a sophomore in high school, I decided to join the cross country team because I didn’t have to try out! Rejection was more than I could handle during the first year of being at a boarding school that was two states away from my family. I thought I was going to die during my first few practices but by God’s grace, I eventually improved and ended up thoroughly enjoying running long distance.

Track, on the other hand, wasn’t in my wheelhouse. (You’ll have to listen to today’s episode to know why.) That’s why I tip my hat to amazing runners like Chanelle Price. This is a woman who began running in her childhood and never gave up on her dream of competing professionally.

In fact, Chanelle is preparing to compete this week in the 2021 Olympic Trials so she can qualify to represent the United States in Japan. What I love about Chanelle is her honesty and transparency and I believe you will, too. Her authenticity is inspiring and gives hope to so many of us who struggle with remembering where our value lies as well as who we really are.

In this week’s season finale, Chanelle shares with us:

    • why she began running competitively,
    • how she found God in one of her lowest moments,
    • how God worked to debunk a myth about Christianity in her life,
    • how God can use our gifts and story for His glory, and more!

    Scripture References

I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. - 1 Corinthians 3:6-7 ESV

Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. - 1 Samuel 17:46 ESV

But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint. - Isaiah 40:31 ESV

Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men. - Colossians 3:23 ESV

    Quotes

“If you chase after Me like you chase after track, just watch what I do in your life.” - Chanelle Price

How to Share Your Story with Others

When I was a little girl, my love for words and stories began through trips to our local and school libraries. When my mom was at a hair salon, sometimes, I’d even hit the jackpot and find a book left behind that I could read. I also loved Sunday School and how my teachers shared Bible stories with my peers and me.

Stories have the power to make you feel less lonely and more understood. They can take you to galaxies far away or give you hard truths from your favorite motivational figure.

Editor and Writing Coach, Beth Crosby, knows how powerful storytelling is, too. That’s why she’s on a mission to help entrepreneurial women share their unique qualifications and expertise through sharing stories. Beth believes each of us has a story to tell and with the right support, we can share those stories well.

In today’s episode, Beth shares with us:

    • what a writing coach is and how to know if you need one,
    • three common writing myths that can sabotage your writing success,
    • the various types of editors + how to know which you need—and when,
    • tips for improving your writing,
    • why your story matters, and more!

    Scriptures

For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. - Isaiah 55:8-9 ESV

For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. - 1 Corinthians 12:12 ESV

For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it? - Luke 14:28 ESV

Without counsel plans fail, but with many advisers they succeed. - Proverbs 15:22 ESV

Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand. - Proverbs 19:21 ESV

How Adopting a Sibling Group Changed My Life

I didn't grow up hearing much about adoption. Honestly, I can only pinpoint one time I did as a young girl. That's when my dad (I never call him 'step dad') and mom brought it up briefly.

As I got older, I saw the commercials about sending money monthly to help take care of children in parts of the globe I'd never heard of before. Then, about 5 years ago, my family started attending the church where we currently worship. There are so many families in our congregation who have chosen to adopt children. Being around these families has truly opened up my eyes to the necessity of finding stable and loving families for not only babies but older children who all too often get overlooked.

In today's episode, Monique shares with us:

    • why she and her husband wanted to adopt,
    • what stops many of us from taking action,
    • why creating margin is so necessary,
    • where our value comes from,
    • how you can honor God and still serve others outside your home,
    • why mamas must prioritize self-care, and more!

    QUOTES (from Monique)

"Adoption is truly a gift from God."

    "Find joy in the mundane."

"If you are filled with confidence of who God says you are, it doesn't matter what everyone else says."

    "It's okay to say 'no'."

    BIBLE REFERENCES

But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. - 1 Timothy 5:8 ESV

But if anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God's love abide in him? Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth. - 1 John 3:17-18 ESV

And he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. - Mark 2:27 ESV

The Importance of Boundaries as an Entrepreneur

Setting boundaries is so important. One reason is that it helps protect our mental health. When we allow ourselves to be slaves to the lack mentality or hustle culture, we open the doors for stress, fear, and a host of other issues to run amuck in our lives.

God didn't call us to live overwhelmed, chaotic lives. In Him, we can find rest and peace--even as entrepreneurs. Entrepreneurship may look glamourous but trust me, many entrepreneurs will let you know all that glitters ain't gold! Entrepreneurship takes a lot of intentional, strategic work--especially if you're a mom who is also working in corporate America.

This week's guest, Loren Chestnut of Captivating Calligraphy, shares with us how she's able to use a skill that brings joy to others and herself without putting her family on the backburner. If you've had a desire to start a business or turn a hobby into one but you're afraid you can't do that while being a mom, then pull up a chair with your notebook in hand. You don't want to miss this episode!

    Loren shares with us:

    • the importance of having time with your hubs but also for yourself,
    • why trimming down your service offers is one of the best things you can do for your business,
    • why balance shouldn't be our focus,
    • how to know if entrepreneurship is for you, and more!

    QUOTES

“Balance means all things are equal but that’s not true. You keep God in the center and everything else floats around in place.” - Loren Chestnut

“You set the framework [of your business]. You have the freedom to do that.” - Loren Chestnut

    BIBLE REFERENCES

“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. - Exodus 20:8-11 ESV

Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. - 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 ESV

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. - Philippians 4:6 ESV

5 Practical Ways to Care for Your Kid's Mental Health

Children oftentimes get a bad wrap. We tell them they've got ‘the easy life’ and how many of us adults would love to switch places with them. The problem, however, is that children go through tough times, too. However, many don't take their issues seriously.

Last week, we shared how important it is to take care of yourself physically and mentally. It's also equally important that our kiddos learn to take care of their physical and mental health, too.

In this episode, we chat about:

    • why we should show concern for the things that bother our kiddos,
    • why our words matter,
    • helping our kiddos process their emotions,
    • 2 myths about why some people don't seek help for their mental health,
    • 5 tools to help your kiddo improve their mental health, and more!

    Quotes

"When we show a lack of concern for the things that matter to them, it’s easier for them to believe the lies Satan whispers." - JaQuette Gilbert

"If you're constantly hearing, "toughen up" but you're not told what "toughen up" means, a lot could get lost in translation. You can end up having a kid suffer by developing faulty beliefs." - JaQuette Gilbert

    Bible References

"Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it. - Proverbs 22:6

"but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint." - Isaiah 40:31

"Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light." - Matthew 11:28-30

“fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” - Isaiah 41:10

"Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things." - Philippians 4:8

    Mental Health Matters, Mama

Mental health is still a touchy subject in many circles--even though it's 2021. No one wants to look as if they don't have it all together but the truth is, who does?

What I can tell you is that God cares about you from the inside out, sis. You don't have to do anything to be loved or accepted by Him. He made you and you're good enough for Him.

While you're keeping track of extracurricular activities, grocery runs, your job, and everything in between don't forget to take care of yourself. Your mental health is just as important as your physical health.

In this episode, we chat about:

    • common issues moms face,
    • why maintaining your mental health is vital,
    • why sharing your story is important,
    • help for when you're feeling low, and more!

    Hope for Suicidal Thoughts

Losing a loved one is never easy. However, when a loved one chooses to end their life, that can add to the sting of loss. Heather Palacios knows all too well what it’s like to struggle with suicidal thoughts. She’s been on this journey since she was 8 years old and God has allowed her to use her life experiences to help others through their mental afflictions, too.

Oftentimes, many of us are afraid to share our struggles with others. We fear what they will think, say or do. But Heather’s testimony shows us there’s so much power in owning your story and trusting God to use it to draw others closer to Him. Sharing isn’t always easy and we’re thankful Heather took the opportunity to help spread some hope for those struggling with suicidal ideation.

If you or a loved one has suicidal thoughts, please know you’re not alone. There are so many resources available to you. Here are a few:

    • Call the suicide hotline at 1.800.273.TALK
    • Regularly see a Christian therapist
    • Reach out to Heather for prayer and a carefully curated Life Box

In this week’s episode, we chat about:

    • Why remembering our past can help us be empathetic towards others,
    • Finding God in our darkest moment,
    • Myths regarding suicide in the Christian community,
    • Importance of focus/anchor/life verses,
    • How to help yourself when you’re struggling with mental afflictions,
    • The importance of Christian counseling and the shame surrounding it, and much more!

Please use your best judgment about listening to this week’s episode with the kiddos in tow. This could open the door to fruitful conversation if your kiddos are old enough. However, we pray you’re able to broach this conversation when the time is right. Your local church may have resources in place to assist you as you speak with them, too.

    BIBLE REFERENCES

So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. - John 8:36 ESV

And he said to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest. - Luke 10:2 ESV

This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. - Joshua 1:8 ESV

How to Look & Feel Your Best

Blown out diapers, grass stains from soccer games, and hurled spaghetti. These are just a few things we ladies encounter along our motherhood journey. Who has time to put together outfits you’d see former First Lady, Michelle Obama rockin’ when you’re busy cleaning up and running to multiple extracurricular activities?

Listen, I hear you and I see you, mama. That’s why I’m so glad I had the opportunity to chat with Personal Stylist, Melanie Kendall. She’s a wife, mom, and entrepreneur with practical tips to help us look and feel better about ourselves. This week, we’re chatting all about:

    • how what we wear benefits our mental health,
    • why you should care about what you wear while working remotely,
    • how to resist attaching our worth to our clothing and external appearance,
    • how we can use our everyday gifts to honor God and help others, and more!

    Quotes

“Feel confident where you are right now.” - Melanie Kendall

“Look good on the journey.” - Melanie Kendall

    SCRIPTURES TO MEDITATE ON

Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. - Proverbs 31:30

And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? - Matthew 6:25

Likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control. - 1 Timothy 2:9a

Being Black and Christian in America

The United States has come a long way in terms of equality; however, we still have much more work to do, as evidenced by the recent shooting of Daunte Wright, an unarmed Black man. So many men and women have fought and continue to do so to make life better for all people. For those individuals, including this week's guest, Dr. Quantrilla Ard, I'm deeply grateful.

Over the past few years, I've come to realize there seems to be a divide within the Black community, in particular. Every ethnicity has certain cultural practices that are common to many in that community. The Black community is no different. While there isn't a problem with many of these shared experiences, I've grown to question some of them and whether or not they push me towards or away from God.

I also often reflect on how we live in a world/country where everyone isn’t afforded the same access to healthcare. We’re also not afforded the same treatment when in comes to traffic stops, jogging in neighborhoods or walking home. Oftentimes, Black and Brown people experience less than stellar interactions with medical professionals and law enforcement (myself included) based on ill-founded judgments by the very people who are supposed to be helpers.

For the record, I strongly believe I am a Christian who happens to have brown skin and naturally curly hair. My identity is in God alone. I also believe none of us are perfect and that there are some who make good choices while others don’t—in every industry. There isn’t a one size fits all approach to people. We are blessed to share many similarities but we also have beautiful differences, too.

I wanted to process some of these thoughts with another Christian woman who happens to be Black, what life in America has looked like for her and how to find God in the middle of everything.

I'm so glad my path crossed with Dr. Quantrilla Ard's. She's an AH-MAZING woman and this week, she shares with us:

    • disparities in the American health care system, particularly as it pertains to maternal care for Black and Brown mamas,
    • navigating the trauma associated with raising Black boys in America,
    • unlearning things we learned regarding God and His character in our youth,
    • the Christian response to injustices, and so much more!

    QUOTES

"Am I sharing for shock value or from a place where I believe I’m helping someone?" - Dr. Quantrilla Ard

"The work of activism begins in our homes." - Dr. Quantrilla Ard

“Everyone’s not called to do everything but we all can do something.” - Dr. Quantrilla Ard

    Bible Verses

But let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream. - Amos 5:24

Learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression; bring justice to the fatherless, plead the widow's cause. - Isaiah 1:17

He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God? - Micah 6:8

Strengthen Your Faith Through Bible Journaling

I’ve got to admit that the initial Bible journaling craze threw me for a loop! I didn’t understand why anyone would want to draw and color in their Bible. Don’t get me wrong—I love a good doodle and I actually used to draw a bit back in the day. It’s just that I grew up in an environment where I was taught the Bible is sacred and highlighting was the most I’d seen anyone do in their Bible.

That’s why I’m so glad my friend, Jen was able to chat with me about some myths and misconceptions regarding Bible journaling.

In this episode, Jen and I chat about:

    • What Bible journaling is + how it can help us in our faith walk,
    • How to make Bible studying fun,
    • What to do if you don’t want to draw or write in your Bible,
    • How Bible journaling can help you disciple your kiddos, and more!

    Scriptures to meditate on

Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.” - 2 Timothy 2:15

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” - Psalm 119:105

This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.” - Joshua 1:8

    Reflecting on 2020

It's the end of the year and I'm sure you've seen your fair share of 2020 memes, many of which have a "good riddance" vibe. Rightfully so, there are undeniably several examples of things that sideswiped many of us. However, there's also a lot of good that came out of this year, too. In this year's final episode, we reflect on:

    • highlights of some eye-opening events of 2020,
    • what kind of character 2020 revealed about us,
    • what happens when we don't pivot, adapt, or change with the times,
    • my take of Disney's Soul,
    • and what kind of legacy we plan to leave behind and pursue.
