    2009 MTV Video Music Awards

You know, the one where Kanye took the microphone from Taylor Swift. We look back at this seemingly meaningless moment that now carries so much weight 10 years later due to the reaction to event and subsequent actions by both artists (but mostly Kanye) that have kept this controversy going. It's often a silly subject, but unfortunately has brought up a lot of dark and uncomfortable feelings over the years. We do our best to examine why that's the case. Shout out to Jay Leno.

Also, we look at Todd Phillips' comments on comedy and how that relates to our earlier discussion this year on The Hangover.

UPDATE: Andrew Luck's Retirement, Antonio Brown's Offseason, and Reconsidering CTE and Player Safety

A lot has happened since we recorded our last episode...like the franchise player for our hometown team shockingly retiring after a string of injuries. Kiel and Brock get into it and consider what the Andrew Luck retirement will mean for the game. We also do our best to discuss the allegations against Antonio Brown.

Player Safety, CTE, and the 2009 NFL Season

As another football season approaches, Kiel and Brock look back on the 2009 NFL season and some huge changes in the way we thought about player safety. Was the NFL truly looking out for its players with a set of new rule changes, or were they hoping to weather a coming storm. The two look back on a string of discoveries related to CTE and how they impacted how football is played. They also discuss the future of football and the NFL and how our opinions on player safety have shifted over the past 10 years. Listen in!

Inglorious Basterds and the Legacy of Tarantino

With another Quentin Tarantino film hitting theaters this summer, we look back on Inglorious Basterds. It's been 10 years since we were introduced to Hans Landa, Aldo Raine, Bridget von Hammersmark, and Fredrick Zoller. How have our views on the film changed over the past decade, and how has the culture at large pivoted in how we talk about Tarantino? Brock and Kiel dig into the details, sharing some of their favorite scenes, stories, and moments from the film and where the movie ranks amongst Tarantino's other work. They also break down Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and discuss the director's penchant for re-writing history, for better or worse. Listen in!

    Funny People

It's a Judd Apatow, Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill and Adam Sandler comedy! This has to be huge, right? Well...Funny People is often a mess, but a beautiful mess. Kiel Hauck (@kielhauck) and Brock Benefiel (@brockbenefiel) pick over this imperfect, but interesting film in all it's glory. Why doesn't it work exactly? Why is this so long? Why didn't we get more interesting Sandler after this? It's all answered this episode!

    500 Days of Summer

On July 17, 2009, longtime music video director Marc Webb dazzled with his debut feature film, 500 Days of Summer. Despite a flawed script and odd choices for the main character, this film still is fascinating. We discuss what it was like to relate to Tom in our 20s versus our 30s and the amazing performances by Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel.

    The Death of Michael Jackson

On June 25, 2009, the world was shocked by the unexpected death of Michael Jackson. Ten years later, we attempt (as best we can) to sort through Jackson's legacy amid the Leaving Neverland documentary in 2019. We also talk about the odd media coverage of Jackson during our lifetimes. It's a tough topic, but we attempt to grapple with the subject and the nature of problematic art.

Bryce Harper's 2009 Sports Illustrated Cover

In 2009, Tom Verducci wrote a myth-making cover story about a then 16 year-old slugger named Bryce Harper for Sports Illustrated. Dubbed "Baseball's LeBron," Harper was expected to be a legend before he had even signed a contract. Now, 10 years later, he's been a MVP, changed teams and (briefly) signed baseball's most lucrative deal. But how has this article shaped the way we think of Harper? We decide on this episode.

Also, we fast forward 10 years to predict how we think baseball will change.

    The Hangover

It's been 10 years since The Hangover became a summer smash, grossed almost $300 million, and made stars out of Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis and Ed Helms. We look back at the laughs that hold up a decade later and A LOT of jokes and plot lines that haven't aged well. Co-hosts Kiel Hauck and Brock Benefiel also determine how this movie fits into the decade of comedies in the 2000s.

    Barack Obama Becomes President

10 years ago, Barack Obama because the 44th president of the United States. 10 years later...well, things are different. We look back on the entire run from the primaries, to election night, to the inauguration, to his first year in office. Co-hosts Kiel Hauck and Brock Benefiel think about what the election of Barack Obama meant to them as casual followers of politics in their early 20s. Ahhh, remember politics in 2009? We also think about how it feels to look back on that time, until it gets too sad.
