In this episode, Jess is joined by Melbourne Naturopath and Positive Association Technique (PAT) practitioner Leila DiQuinzio for a deep dive into the fascinating connection between histamine, anxiety, gut health, and mental wellbeing.
Leila explains how histamine does far more than trigger allergy symptoms — it also acts as a neurotransmitter that influences alertness, mood, sleep, cognition, and stress response. Together, Jess and Leila unpack how histamine overload can contribute to anxiety, why symptoms can feel so unpredictable, and how naturopathy and PAT work together to bring the body back into balance.

If you’re in your forties or fifties and suddenly dealing with itchy skin, flushing, hives, sneezing fits, food reactions, or migraines — you’re not imagining it. Many women in perimenopause develop histamine intolerance or even full-blown mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS), even if you’ve never had allergies before.
To understand why this happens and how Positive Association Technique (PAT) can be beneficial during perimenopause, we need to explore the fascinating hormonal histamine connection – oestrogen and histamine are like dance partners who can either move in perfect harmony or step all over each other’s toes.

In this episode of the Natural Allergy Treatment Podcast, Jess speaks with Janna Kremez, from Functional Well-Being, an Orofacial Myofunctional Therapist and breathing educator.
They discuss dysfunctional breathing from allergies and the comprehensive approach that combines Positive Association Technique (PAT) and orofacial myofunctional therapy (OMT) to restore a healthy breathing pattern.
Breathing is an essential function of the human body, crucial for our health and well-being. However, many people experience dysfunctional breathing patterns, often as a result of allergies and environmental sensitivities.
Dysfunctional breathing from allergies can manifest in various ways, from chronic sinus congestion to more severe conditions like asthma and sleep apnea. While addressing dysfunctional breathing and allergies with traditional treatments can offer temporary relief, a more holistic, integrated approach can provide many long-term benefits.

Caleb from Tropeaka shared his unique health story with me, after developing CFS and food intolerances from mould exposure.
After being diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) in 2011, he embarked on a journey trying everything in the health world to get his health back on track.
After experiencing remarkable improvements in his health with dietary changes, he created his own health food company called Tropeaka in 2016!
He also attended our Newcastle clinic in 2024 for some Positive Association Technique (PAT) sessions as part of his health journey, to address food intolerances he developed following the mould exposure.

You’ve heard that sugar is bad for you, but when faced with a rich truffle mud cake it’s hard to remember why. It basically comes down to two major mechanisms: immunity and inflammation.
Unfortunately, sugar cravings and allergies have both of these things in common. Allergic conditions like dermatitis/eczema, hay fever and asthma are due to an immune system that has lost its way, overproduced histamine and created an inflammatory cascade.
We see many Positive Association Technique (PAT) clients at our clinics who struggle with sugar cravings and allergies. Interestingly, sugar cravings can actually be a sign that you may have an intolerance or sensitivity to sugars.
So, let's uncover this curious connection with Melbourne based Naturopath & PAT Practitioner Leila DiQuinzio.

We see many clients in our clinics struggling with the debilitating effects of migraines, who respond well to our Positive Association Technique (PAT), by helping relieve their individual food reactions.
One particularly common food reaction we see is to naturally occurring amines. So, why do amines cause migraines?
Many healthy foods we eat contain amines, where they can absorbed across the gut wall, enter the blood stream and impact various chemical processes in our body, including in the brains of migraine sufferers.
In this episode, PAT Expert Naturopath Jenny explains the underlying mechanisms of migraines, the triggers that contribute and how PAT can be beneficial for migraine sufferers.
