#112 The Commonwealth Games Scotland On Standby

The Commonwealth Games are "dying out a little bit unfortunately"- the view of proud Scottish world champion Beth Potter - who competed in Glasgow in 2014 in athletics and won Team Scotland’s first medal in the triathlon in the sunshine in Sutton Park in Birmingham in 2022.

But since that superb summer in England’s second city, the storm clouds have surrounded the Commonwealth Games Federation, when the state of Victoria and Australia pulled out of hosting in 2026.

Now 10 years on from their own glorious Games in Glasgow, Commonwealth Games Scotland has stepped up and said if the CGF can’t find another host by it’s own deadline of May this year (2024), it’s come up with a new concept for the Commonwealth Games, which could also secure it’s long term future.

Scotland is on standby and this is the story so far.

    #111 Paris 2024 3 Months To Go!

The countdown continues to Paris 2024 - and we're en-route!

We'll probably use satnav and gps to get us to our destination this summer, so it's right that the Olympic movement has said it wants to be front and centre and leading the way in ensuring AI benefits sport and isn't detrimental. We've been at the IOC's AI Launch Event in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and we talk safeguarding with 2010 gold medalist Lindsey Vonn and the perfect 10 and judging in Olympic sport with Nadia Comaneci. And listen up for the next big thing - WAHA!

We hear from Tony Estanguet, President of the 2024 organising committee, about his joy at the next stage of the Olympic torch relay and the flame sailing across the Med aboard the three mast 'Belem' - thanks to our friend Phil Barker who's right across that.

And we catch up with Adam Burgess - 4th in the canoe slalom on Tokyo - who had a broken finger when confirmed by Team GB for Paris 2024 and why he's now raring to go this season!

Alice Dearing in her own words

The Team GB history maker is stepping away from competitive swimming. 27 year old Alice Dearing became the first black woman to swim for TeamGB at an Olympic Games. She also set up the Black Swimming Association to diversify her sport and keep encouraging everyone to learn to swim - a basic life skill.

But what next? Alice is keen to convey a message to other British Olympic and Paralympic athletes and staff about best preparing for the process, and this comes as UK Sport, the UK Sports Institute (UKSI) and the British Elite Athletes Association (BEAA) are increasing engagement with athletes to help them for their life beyond a funded programme.

This is an Anything but Footy special with Alice Dearing in her own words.

#69 Great British Bosses - Joel Lavery

It's dubbed the biggest global networking event in sport and it's in right here in the UK in Birmingham - the home of the last, and what could be the very last, Commonwealth Games in 2022.

The week-long Sport Accord World Sport and Business Summit is supported by the International Olympic Committee and has been brought here by Joel Lavery, the West Midlands Growth Company’s major sporting events' strategic lead.

Birmingham is open for business and world sport according to Joel, despite the well publicised financial issues surrounding the City Council and cuts to budgets.
