This week’s episode opens with a candid conversation about Patrick's rehearsals with an Eric Clapton tribute band... which is especially interesting because Patrick despises Eric Clapton.

Then we recap a fantastic night at Molly’s in Kingwood for Halfway to Paddy's Day, with Jeff Duncan on fiddle and a very special guest in the audience: Turbo and his wife Stacie!

We talk about the nerves and excitement of playing in front of our drummer, share some Kingwood footage—including Patrick’s merciless roasting of our friend Mike Carr—and explain how Chad utilizes "stem splitting" to clean up live recordings and vancasts.

Plus: mistaken soundguy identities, ScotFest and Ireland excitement, and love and well wishes for our friend Dave Hitchcock as he recovers from brain surgery.

    Episode 394: Jumpin' Jimbo Jamboree

SlapperCast Episode 394: "Don't Get Mad, Get Evil"

This episode was recorded in two bits: first on the road to Beaumont for our Halfway to Paddy's Day show at the Logon Cafe, and then later on the way back to Houston after the gig.

It was a GREAT night with a wonderful crowd, and we were all thrilled to be back at it after taking some time off while Patrick was back home in Ireland.

This is mostly the same kind of stuff we talk about while driving to-and-from a show when the cameras are off... but in this case, our energy levels were so high that we knew we had to capture it all.

MASSIVE thanks to Chantell Marie and Tad Oglesbee for providing video footage of the show.

Episode 390: This Huge Tapestry of Stories That We Live In

Turbo joins us with an update on his knee-replacement recovery and reveals that he’s been writing not one, but TWO autobiographical books, the first one entitled "Just Look Up" and the second tentatively titled "The Lock". Chad's nerdbrain refers to it as Turbo's superhero origin story, and once you read the stories, you'll understand why.

Chad then talks about his debut solo album project, Magic Notebook, which he's currently releasing demos of on his Patreon one song at a time (https://www.patreon.com/chadsmalley).

We also talk about our recent gig at Blue Lagoon in Houston... a great neighborhood bar in Spring Branch that we were VERY impressed with.

MASSIVE THANKS to Jim Hughes for the video footage from our show at Blue Lagoon.

    Episode 389: Corn-Free Show

    SlapperCast Episode 389: "Corn-Free Show"

Recorded during rehearsal with James “Jimbo” Edwards, this episode quickly turns into a deep dive through Houston music history. Jimbo traces the origins of Moses Guest, how he joined the band in the mid-’90s, their early touring years, the evolution of their acoustic shows, the addition of William James on guitar, and the recordings that best represent the band today.

Episode 388: In the Knee Time

SlapperCast Episode 388: "In the Knee Time"

This week's episode is typically all over the place, with some updates about upcoming shows, Mayo’s big football win over Kerry (that's proper football, y'all, otherwise known as soccer here in the states), Turbo’s continued recovery and Jimbo’s meticulous approach to rehearsal.

We also talk about our friends Moses Guest, Lonefeather, and a possible guest-drummer recording project.

ALSO: a preview of Patrick's guest vocal on a great original song called "Grandpa's Last Christmas" from the upcoming album "Brian Smith Presents A Christmas Extravaganza"!

Episode 387: No Knee Never No More

SlapperCast Episode 387: "No Knee Never No More"

What was intended to be a quick bag-and-tag for some leftover interview footage turned into a full 40-minute SlapperCast ramble.

We recap another mighty Blagfeather show with Lonefeather and drummer Justus Swantner, check in on Turbo’s difficult knee-replacement recovery, sing the praises of Moses Guest and Houston’s original-music scene, and look ahead to upcoming shows and future guests.

Episode 386: Keeping the Seat Warm

SlapperCast Episode 386: "Keeping the Seat Warm"

Turbo is back on SlapperCast with an honest update from the long, strange road of knee-replacement recovery. He talks about physical therapy, sleepless nights, pain management, getting basic movement back, and the surreal feeling of watching most of his life come to a crashing halt while Blaggards carry on without him.

We also reflect on the drummers who have stepped in during his absence, the respect they’ve shown for Turbo’s arrangements, and the almost wordless musical language the three of us have developed over the years.

Plus, our friends in Lonefeather join us to preview Blagfeather 4 at Rehab Bar on the Bayou, with Justus Swantner pulling double duty behind the kit, and Jana from Whispering Grove Renaissance Faire shares what makes their growing Southeast Texas community such a welcoming place for first-time faire-goers.

    Episode 385: Jimbo's Jam Room

SlapperCast Episode 385: "Jimbo's Jam Room"

This week we’re joined by our old friend James “Jimbo” Edwards, who’s been kind enough to step back behind the Blaggards drum kit while Turbo recovers from knee surgery.

We recorded this in Jimbo’s rehearsal room after running through a few songs, so this one has a loose, candid, in-the-room feel as we talk about playing with in-ear monitors, finding the pocket, the return of Moses Guest, Jimbo’s years away from music, his work as a massage therapist with Hands in Harmony Bodyworks, and the very serious question of whether Chad should keep the beard (spoiler: he didn't).

We’re also including a short preview from our interview with Jana from Whispering Grove Renaissance Faire in Kountze, Texas, where she talks about what makes Whispering Grove such a welcoming place for first-time faire-goers, families, artists, vendors, and anyone who just wants to wander around under the trees for a while.

ALSO: our upcoming show at the Big Top with James on August 5th, possible opening songs, spicy food, van-loading skills, and a bit of candid bonus conversation after the camera stopped.

Episode 384: Now We’ve Got Them

This week on SlapperCast, we pick up where last week’s Doug Stanhope conversation left off, digging into crowd work, hecklers, stage nerves, and the satisfying moment when you know you’ve won a room over.

ALSO: cover songs, why some songs deserve to be kicked into a higher gear, and what makes live music feel alive in the first place.
