Join us as we delve into the careers of Canadian actors, writers, and directors who helped to create the Golden Age of radio.
This time, we feature a double dose of Canadians Abroad.
First up to bat, from June 18, 1945, is a baseball comedy from Screen Guild Theater called Alibi Ike , starring Jack Carson who was from Carman, Manitoba.
Next, we hear an episode from The Alan Young Show from November 6 of that same year entitled Alan Wills Five Dollars. Young was born in North Shields, Northumberland, England. The family moved to West Vancouver, British Columbia when he was six. He lived there until he moved to the States to pursue his career.
In our Made-in-Canada this week, we listen to a quiz show called “Share The Wealth.” Our Canadians Abroad segment changes the pace considerably with an episode from the series “Escape.” The star is William Conrad, but included in the cast is Winnipeg-born Jack Krushan.
In our made-in-Canada segment, we hear an episode of Rum Runners called ‘Champagne.’ In our Canadian’s Abroad segment, we present an episode of Matinee Theater, featuring actor Victor Jory, who was born in Dawson City, Yukon.
In our made-in-Canada segment, we present an episode of ‘Jam Session.’ Our Canadian’s Abroad segment features an episode of ‘This is Your FBI,’ starring Québec-born actor Stacy Harris.
This time we have an hour-long Made in Canada segment. We present an episode of “CBC Stage” from 1969.
In our ‘Made in Canada’ segment, we hear an episode of “The Queen’s Men”, a series which aired during 1954. The episode is entitled “Missing Persons Case aka Andrew Weeks”.
In our ‘Canadians Abroad’ segment, we listen to an episode of “Texaco Town” starring the comedian Eddy Cantor. The episode from October 4, 1936, features Montreal-native Bobby Breen and Deanna Durbin, who grew up in Winnipeg.
In our ‘Made in Canada’ segment, we hear a documentary written, produced and narrated by the late Mike Morrison who was a long-time CBC employee. The title is “Beyond Our Control” and the subject is radio bloopers, most of which are Canadian.
Our ‘Canadians Abroad’ segment features an episode of “Command Performance”. The Canadian was Winnipeg-born actress Deanna Durbin.
This time we hear an hour-long ‘Canadians Abroad’ segment. Toronto-born Walter Huston stars in the Lux Radio Theatre presentation of “The Treasure of the Sierra Madre”.
This week we have an hour-long made-in-Canada segment called CBC Summer Stage, starring actors John Drainie and Billy Mae Richards in a drama entitled, ‘Jake and the Kid.’
In our made-in-Canada segment, we hear an episode of “Mystery Theatre” from 1967, called ‘The Duel.’ In our Canadian’s abroad segment, we feature Vancouver-native, Alan Young in an episode of “Family Theatre” called ‘Lion Tamer.’
We begin our Made-in-Canada segment with Tommy Hunter and His Pals in celebration of the 82nd birthday (March 20) of “Canada’s Country Gentleman.” Next, we hear a bit of comedy about the result of what happens when we consume what is often delicately referred to as “musical fruit,” which you would never expect the CBC to air back in 1948. In our Canadians Abroad segment, we hear Vancouver native Ann Rutherford in an episode of The Eddy Bracken Story entitled Whole Day Without Trouble. Yeah, right!
