- 1 hour 9 minutesShari Ball-Garcia - “Run for Her Life: The Brutal Attack during a 1992 run on Maui that Changed her Life Forever”
Hey runners,
I hope you enjoyed this episode and came away with some valuable insights on running safety. We’re all incredibly grateful that Shari survived what could have been a tragic outcome. Though her experience was life-altering, she has faced each day with strength since the attack in September 1992.
Shari’s story is a powerful reminder to stay alert and take safety seriously on every run. Running is a wonderful and freeing activity—but it’s important to remember that unexpected situations can arise.
Stay safe, stay aware of your surroundings, and keep putting one foot in front of the other.
Keep on running,
~Jim

20 April 2026, 2:00 pm - 1 hour 11 minutesTina Muir – Running for Real – Making a Difference
Hello Runners!
Fall race season is winding down, and what a season it has been thus far.
First, the world record at the Berlin Marathon by Eliud Kipchoge with a time of 2:01:09. And a week later, the US Women's Marathon Record fell at the Chicago Marathon by Emily Sisson with a time of 2:18:29. The next US major is in a few weeks, the New York Marathon! We shall see what amazing things happen.
Congratulations to each of you that reached your goal of finishing a race, or two, or three this fall. You rock.
I'm so honored, humbled, and excited to have Tina Muir as my guest this episode. Tina is the founder and CEO of Running for Real, a running influencer, and the #1 running podcast with over 5.5 million downloads. Running for Real is much more than a running podcast; it's a running community! Tina is exceptionally passionate about the environment, and uses her platform to bring awareness to our planet as an environmental activist. Simply a wonderful human being making a huge difference!
In April, Tina ran the Maui Marathon as a guide for a dear friend, Joseph Retherford who is mostly blind. A former elite runner, she abruptly decided to stop running in her prime shocking the running world. She had had enough. Tina had been suffering from amenorrhea, the loss of menstruation, for nine years. She was burnt out and wanted to start a family. So she stopped running.
She reached out to me in Maui to see if we could connect. Unfortunately, it didn't happen because I was highly strapped for the entire weekend and after as the course director. But we talked, and she expressed how much she enjoyed the marathon and its effect on her being in Maui.
I know you will enjoy this episode. We talk very little about Tina's past as an elite runner, and you can find numerous articles written about Tina on the Internet. Most of our talk is on her Maui experience, the environment, the status of races becoming more environmentally friendly, the addition of a non-binary category, and the fantastic running community she is building. We go deep, for sure. I am grateful to call Tina a friend!
So please, please share this episode with all of your running friends and on your social media platforms. It is, in my opinion, one of my best episodes!
Enjoy this episode! And if Tina inspires you, please send me a note to let me know your thoughts at [email protected].Thank you runners for listening to the Feel-Good Running Podcast! 25 October 2022, 3:00 pm - 1 hour 6 minutesEliza Fletcher – Heinous, Senseless, Murder – Safety Tips from Tasha Ina Church
- Hello Runners! This must stop! Another young woman was violently murdered while out for a run!Eliza Fletcher from Memphis, wife, mother of two boys, and a Kindergarten teacher, was out for a run on Friday, September 2, 2022. She was running at about 4:00 AM, just doing what she loved, when he violently attacked, abducted, and murdered her. This psychopath dumped her body behind an abandoned house in tall grass. This murder was a heinous, senseless, and disgusting crime by a sick, psychopath, fucking animal of a so-called human being. And it pisses me off—no reason for this whatsoever. I talk about Eliza and other murdered female runners in this episode, and I don't hold back. However, if you are sensitive to a little rough language, please be aware, and I apologize in advance for my language. I also replay an interview in late 2020 with Self Defense Instructor Tasha Ina Church. She went through a very uncomfortable episode while running with a male scumbag following her. Tasha knows over 850 Self Defense moves. And even so, this encounter shook her to the core. We talk about that, and Tasha provides valuable self-defense tips and techniques. Even one of them can save a life. Very much worth a listen.

9 September 2022, 3:00 pm - 1 hour 13 minutesJulia Beckley – Adaptive Athlete – Making a Difference!Hello Runners! Wowza! It has been a hot, hot summer thus far! It can undoubtedly be challenging to run in training and races. Are you an intelligent runner, staying hydrated and not overheating? I hope so! August is upon us and the fall race season is just around the corner. Where did the summer go? It is flying by so fast. Not fair! My guest in this episode is Julia Beckley from here in Denver. Julia is an AWD adaptive athlete that is making quite a difference. What is AWD, you ask? Athletes with Disabilities. See, Julia is a push-rim athlete who pushes herself to the limit. Unfortunately, however, she has several medical conditions. One is hypophosphatasia, a rare condition that keeps bones and teeth from developing the right way, making them more likely to form incorrectly or break. Since she was eight years old, she has broken close to 45 bones. An athlete from childhood, she has competed in races from a 5K to a 100-mile ultra. And she is making a difference being an advocate to bring push-rim wheelchair inclusion to more Colorado races. Julia is also the Director of the AWD side of the Human Race in Ft. Collins, Colorado, to be held on Saturday, August 5th. Julia is a rock star, and her incredible story will inspire you. Also joining are Eddie Perez and Josh Gomez, who were on her support crew for this year's Colfax Marathon. We recorded this conversation at Runners Roost on Colorado Blvd. in Denver. In my intro, I also talk about the nasty pre-race jitters! Enjoy this episode! And if Julia's story inspires you, please send me a note to let me know your thoughts at [email protected]. 20 June 2022, 3:00 pm - 1 hour 7 minutesBonnie VanDeraa– A Story of Survival – Redux
Aloha Runners,
How are you? Are you reaching all of your 2022 running goals? Did you run Boston this year? Did you run a race this year? Running is back, and there are so many races.
I'm in Hawaii, specifically Maui. Yesterday was the Maui Marathon. I am the course director and will talk about the race in the next episode. Since I am traveling, I'm re-releasing a compelling episode I did in 2019 that will truly inspire you.
Sometimes, a story is so inspiring that it will bring you to your knees. This episode is a re-release of an Interview I did in 2019 with Bonnie VanDeraa from Vinita, Oklahoma. It is my most powerful interview with this amazing woman and her fight to survive.
On January 23, 2018, Bonnie went through a horrific event that should have killed her. However, her training and skill as an EMT and her willpower, strength, and courage allowed her to survive. In addition, Bonnie is a runner, and though she has not been able to run since that day, she can walk and, on March 3, 2019, she walked the entire Little Rock Marathon.
While recovering in the hospital, she acquired the nickname "Wonder Woman," she lives up to that name! You do not want to miss this interview. It will change the way you approach your day and your life, for that matter.
Since my interview, Bonnie has written a biography titled, "The Making of a Wonder Woman." You can order it here from Amazon.

I do not spend money to advertise my podcast. Instead, I try to grow it organically, which is by you, my listeners, sharing it! Thank You!

25 April 2022, 7:30 am - 32 minutes 25 secondsRunning Inspirational News and Stories – April 12, 2022Hello Runners, Pollen is upon us as trees and flowers come back to life after the winter months. Well, that, of course, depends on where you live. Trees and flowers bloom all year long in some parts of the United States. Not in Denver. We get the sunshine here, but the trees are bare, and the landscape is brown, though the vista views of the snowcap mountains are breathtaking. With Pollen, for some of us, comes allergies. Sneezing, runny nose, stuffed up head, sneezing, and runny nose. It can be not very pleasant, but as runners, we work through it. So be sure to take some Kleenex with you on your run because, undoubtedly, you will need to blow your nose. Here is an article from Canadian Running titled "Should you run with Seasonal Allergies?". Good luck; my allergies are mild but still sometimes irritating. In this episode, I have three stories for you:
- Addiction to my running watch. Focus on the Apple Watch
- Spencer Dukoff, the deputy editor at Men's Health magazine, ran the 50th NYC Marathon as his first. Spencer's journey is remarkable.
- Brandess Wallace, who was a runner, then wasn't, the was again. Hear her story and her love of running.
These stories will motivate and inspire you! Enjoy then! If you know someone with a unique running story, please share it with me. Hello Runners,
It's spring! On my run this morning, I heard birds chirping. Yeah, being in Denver, we have this thing called winter. I know that some of you live in warmer climates and cannot relate. But the bird thing is a big deal. The snow thing gets old!
I'm pleased to bring you this exciting episode that you will enjoy. It has been quite some time since I interviewed a guest. So it felt good to get back in the interview saddle.
A little over a week ago, my friend introduced me to this runner with an incredible story. In 2015, Ben Reisinger weighed 375 pounds. After moving back from Denver, he started his transformation, and in October of 2021, he ran a 2:52 marathon at the Baystate Marathon in Lowell, MA. Ben is an inspiration to all runners.
Enjoy this episode! And if Ben's story inspires you, please send me a note to let me know your thoughts at [email protected].
And as I mentioned in previous episodes, I am very involved with the Maui Marathon as the course director. We are all ready to go for the event on April 24th. Hello Runners,
How are you? It's already March, and it's entirely possible you may have already run a race this year, or are training for a spring race, or maybe you are a new runner and now seeing results or just running for enjoyment. No matter, I hope you are injury-free and feeling great!
So, I've not published an episode in over a month. February was tough, I caught a bad case of the flu, or maybe it was Covid. I was in bed for a week with no energy, chills, sweating, and feeling miserable and got behind in just about everything. I was also signed up to run the Vegas Rock n' Roll Half-Marathon which I had to bail. Frustrating to say the least.
I'm fully vaccinated have my booster shot and still had Omicron right after Christmas last year, but the symptoms were very mild. Anyway, I feel bad I've not released an episode this long. So to make up for it, I am releasing two back-to-back weeks to catch up. I appreciate your understanding and value you all that listen to my podcast.
In this episode, I have three stories for you:
- Where are you with your 2022 running goals? And some interesting 2021 statistics from Strava, the popular running app.
- I know there are several workouts you can do to increase your speed to run a faster race. One speed workout I found exciting and doable is from Coach Marilyn Chychota.
- How about a heartwarming story? John Hixon and his daughter Lauren Phillips recently ran the Antarctica Marathon.
These stories will motivate and inspire you!
As you may know, I am very involved with the Maui Marathon as the course director. Everything is set for the event on April 24th. I have a unique code for listeners that will give you 25% off the full or half marathon for the 2022 Maui Marathon. 7 March 2022, 7:00 am - 31 minutes 9 secondsRunning Inspirational News– February 2, 2022Hello Runners, How is it going? It's February, and we have already completed one month of 2022. I hope you are all healthy. Are you on track with your running goals for 2022? And for our new runners who may have started your running journey as a new year resolution, are you still with us? I guarantee if you stick with running, it will change you as a person. I just returned from Maui and had a wonderful time. So I spent much of my time prepping the course for the 2022 Maui Marathon coming up on Sunday, April 24th. The mile markings needed to be touched up, and the race course is now tip-top shape. And oh so beautiful! So consider running it this year! Just think of what a fantastic vacation this would be. And the good news is I have a unique code that will give you 25% off either the full or half marathon for the 2022 Maui Marathon. CODE: feelgoodrunning25 (case sensitive) This code does not apply to the Marathon Relay, 5K, or 10K races. While in Maui, I planned to run the 10K of the Maui Oceanfront Marathon instead; I helped the timing company at the halfway point of the half marathon. It was great to see all the runners as they turned to head back. A perfect morning! Of course, I saw many of my friends, and it felt like I had never left. Maui is forever in my heart, and who knows, I could once again be my home in the future. In this episode, I have four news stories for you. The first story is about our homegirl from right here in Denver, Brittany Charboneau, who won overall women for all four races at the Disney Marathon Goofy Challenge. The second is a story about how running makes you smarter. The third is about a remarkable woman Gretchen Schoenstein. And finally, a heartwarming story about Wrinkle the Duck, who ran the 2021 NYC Marathon. Enjoy If you know someone with a unique running story, please feel free to share it with me.
