Leeds United lost their final game of the Premier League season when going down 3-0 at West Ham United who, despite the win, were still relegated to the Championship. But the loss does not detract from what has been a positive return to the top-flight for Leeds under Daniel Farke – who was able to keep a promoted side in the division for the first time in his coaching career.

The panel reflect on the highs of the 2025-26 campaign for the Whites and what they need to do during the coming summer months to ensure they strengthen their position.

What was for some people a ‘controversial’ England World Cup squad selection by Thomas Tuchel also comes under the spotlight, as does Oli McBurnie’s omission from the Scotland squad despite a memorable season with Hull in the Championship. This week marks 10 years since Sheffield Wednesday were 90 minutes away from ending what was back then a 16-year absence from the Premier League.

But it was Hull City who got over the line and on to the riches promised by the English game's top-flight.

Last weekend, the Tigers booked their own return to the Premier League by beating Middlesbrough, but the Owls' fate had long been sealed with relegation to League One confirmed many weeks before.

In line with the anniversary of the Owls' trip to Wembley back in 2016, football writer Dom Howson has released a book - 'Carlos Had A Dream - When Sheffield Wednesday Dared to Dream Again'.

Leeds United continued their strong finish to the season with a 1-0 win at home to Brighton & Hove Albion, proving a strong platform for when they return for their second season in the top-tier in August. 

Spygate finally came to a conclusion on Wednesday evening when the decision to kick Southampton out of the Championship play-off final was upheld, ssetting up an all-Yorkshire final at Wembley this Saturday between Hull City and Middlesbrough.

And Rotherham United took a major step in their rebuild having appointed former England manager Steve McLaren as their new director of football.

Last week’s 3-1 win at home to Burnley – combined with subsequent results elsewhere – left Daniel Farke’s team seven points clear of the drop zone with three games to play. Leeds could be mathematically safe by the time they come to play relegation rivals Tottenham Hotspur on Monday night.

Elsewhere, Middlesbrough will look to overcome their disappointment at missing out on automatic promotion from the Championship on the final day of the regular season when they take on Southampton in the play-offs this weekend.

Hull City will join them in the post-season, their 2-1 win at home to Norwich City last Saturday proving enough to see them leapfrog Wrexham and into the top six at the final ask. It leaves them with a testing two-leg semi-final against Millwall.

Are we wishing for too much with an all-Yorkshire final at Wembley?

Bradford City are also gunning for the national stadium, but first will have to overcome League One rivals Bolton Wanderers in their play-off semi-final in order to book a day out in the capital.

With Sheffield Wednesday condemned to League One for most of the season, Rotherham United long relegated to League Two, Harrogate Town became the third Yorkshire team to suffer the drop – dropping out of the EFL after seven seasons. The team assess their chances of getting back up from the National League at the first time of asking.

And, on the final day of the season, with their new owner David Storch in attendance, Sheffield Wednesday found the perfect moment to record only their second win of the season with a 2-1 victory at home to West Bromwich Albion. Things can only get better.

By contrast, the tears of heartache at Wembley were a far cry from the previous day’s events at Spotland, when York City clinched promotion back to the EFL for the first time in 10 years in the most dramatic of circumstances against National League rivals Rochdale. 

And there is also a chance to look forward to a nail-biting final weekend of the regular season for a number of our clubs, starting in the Championship where Middlesbrough are hoping to clinch automatic promotion, while Hull City strive to clinch the final play-off spot. 

In League One, Bradford City are hoping to secure their place in the play-offs while, in League Two, Harrogate Town have taken their fight for EFL survival down to the last day, hoping a win – or even a point at home to Barnet on Saturday – will be enough to see them retain their status.
