Episode #63: KNOW YOUR ROOTS! The 50 Years Of Horror Recap (1920s-1960s)

It’s another episode of our Know Your Roots: History of Horror Series, but this time we are recapping the last 50 years of horror, before we forge ahead into our next decade, which will be the 1970s.

We will do a recap of major historical events and movements that influenced the horror genre from the 1920s to 1960s, and the films we have already talked about in prior episodes. We will then discuss a few hidden gems from around the globe that are also great representations of what was influencing horror movies of their time periods; the films up for discussion are A Page of Madness (1926), Dracula’s Daughter (1936), Gaslight (1944) and At Midnight I’ll Take Your Soul (1964).

Enjoy and welcome to our dark side…

Kelly's Taboo Terrors: eROTik (2018) W. JOHN PATTERSON

Welcome to Kelly’s Taboo Terrors, a monthly podcast that explores the transgressive side of cinema. These movies, and discussions, are not for the faint of heart so listener's discretion is strongly advised.

This month, I am tackling a very explicit and interesting film by famed Italian extreme horror filmmaker, Domiziano Cristopharo - eROTik (2018). Portraying the loneliness of queerness and mental illness, eROTik is a desolate and strange look into the world of the male necrophile. Viewer's discretion is strongly advised for those wary of male ejaculation!

My guest for this episode is John Patterson! John writes about extreme horror and anything else that catches his interest. He is currently working on a book on queer theory and 50s/60s horror films.

Kelly's Taboo Terrors: DEADGIRL (2008) W. KELLY MCNEELY

A film I love to hate, and hate to love, Deadgirl (2008) remains one of the most disgusting pieces of cinema I have ever experienced. And that’s saying a lot! Bringing to the screen violent misogyny through zombie rape, assault, and brutality, Deadgirl is tremendously offensive and controversial - but also one that gets people talking. It’s a 00s nasty, I am here to finally discuss it, once and for all.

My guest for this episode is Kelly McNeely! Kells is a co-host and enthusiastic mixologist for Black Fawn Distro’s YouTube channel, which also houses her “Streams & Screams” review series. She can be heard as a co-host on the Murmurs From the Morgue Podcast and has appeared as a guest on many others, including A Year in Horror, Our Bloody Obsession, Eye on Horror, The Rockman Power Hour, I Spit on Your Podcast, and Void Video. Kelly has written extensively for iHorror.com — she also represented the site as an entertainment correspondent for The List TV — and has published articles for Modern Horrors, 1428 Elm, Salem Horror Fest, CGMagazine, and Grim Magazine. For creepy crafts and cocktails (and lots of dog pics), you can track her down on Instagram @kellsmcnells. She talks fast and drinks often, but is mostly harmless. Mostly.

Kelly's Taboo Terrors: NEKROMANTIK (1988) W. ERIC FALARDEAU
As far as necrophilia films go, none are more recognizable than German filmmaker, Jorg Buttgereit's, Nekromantik. Epitomizing underground transgressive cinema, Nekromantik shows us the sensual side of the paraphilia, giving us a film with a legacy of sexual depravity and iconic imagery. A cerebral exploitation film that forces us to witness sex, death and body fluids, and how they cum together so perfectly. Can we fuck the fear of death away? My guest for this episode is Éric Falardeau! Éric has written and directed short films, music videos, the cult horror feature Thanatomorphose (2012), which has won him several awards in film festivals. He also wrote the porn-horror movie The Thing from the Lake (2019). Éric has guest-curated exhibitions at the Cinémathèque québécoise and published volumes on erotic cinema, the history of special effects in Quebec and on body fluids in gore and pornography. He is currently working on his second feature film!!! Kelly's Taboo Terrors: AFTERMATH (1994) W. GOBLIN O'RILEY
It’s time to crack open a cold one as the first official season of Kelly’s Taboo Terrors is in full swing! In this episode, I am revisiting the often reviled necrophilia short film by director Nacho Cerda, Aftermath (1994). A powerful film without dialogue, Aftermath says wonders about the desecration of the body after death and how violent brutalizing corpses can be. Is this post-mortem rape or just another way to seek revenge? We discuss this and more on the inaugural episode of your new favorite film podcast. My guest for this episode is the Masked Menace from the Quality Violent Cinema podcast, Goblin O’Riley. With his lack of cinematic knowledge and even less of a personality, Goblin has kept his role in the QVC universe just by showing up. He's also the deeply disturbed brain behind Red Lust, aka Bloodlust XXX, and is 1/3 of the brains behind Slave Dolls 2: Red Rooms, now available from New Film Order. When not ruining podcasts or filming disgusting fetish gore/porn, he can be found reading about psychology, philosophy, and esoteric knowledge. He also has a cat named Django, and she's pretty rad. Kelly's Taboo Terrors: Season 1 Introduction - Necrophilia
The first episode of Kelly’s Taboo Terrors has arrived! To get you ready for the season ahead, I talk about the what, where, when, why and how's of necrophilia. A particular interest of mine are the gendered differences between our beloved necrophiles, that of which I divulge here. Episode 59: Know Your Roots! The 1960s Pt.2
In this episode, we return to the 1960s to discuss the history of horror and the influential films of the decade but this time we have broadened our scope to include international films - hence the part 2. We will do a mini recap of major historical events of the 1960s and where horror was at with experimental films like Psycho (1960), Peeping Tom (1960) and Blood Feast (1963) shocking audiences leading to the rebirth of zombies with Night of the Living Dead (1968). Then we will leave North America to talk about what horror was doing in countries like Japan, France and Great Britain with the films Kuroneko (1968), Eyes Without a Face (1962) and Horror of Dracula (1958). Enjoy and welcome to our dark side… *Note: We are aware that Horror of Dracula was released in 1958, however, we have included this film in the 1960s as it was a film that signaled the rise of Hammer Horror in the UK in the 1960s leading into the 1970s* Intro/Outro Music: Kiss of the Creature by Dance with the Dead Artwork by: Jess Hrycyk Editing work by: Jessica
