If The Shoe Fits part 2

In this follow-up to part 1, I dive a little deeper into the simple metaphor I shared- emphasizing the importance of learning to trust ourselves above external opinions and societal expectations. While it’s valuable to consider what others say, true self-awareness empowers us to rely on our inner voice. I hope that through this journey, we can strengthen our self-trust, enabling us to live more in alignment with our core values and define our self-worth on our own terms.

If The Shoe Fits part 1

For most of my adult life, I believed I was a size 8.5 in running shoes. Recently, after upgrading my shoes, I discovered that a size 9 actually fit me better. This got me thinking—how often do we go through life holding on to outdated beliefs about ourselves, unaware that we've outgrown them? Forcing ourselves to fit into old molds/roles can feel just as uncomfortable as wearing shoes that are too small, even if they were once the "right" size. This episode is nudge to trust your inner sense of when something no longer fits—whether it's a belief, a habit, or even a shoe.

Hawaii 70.3 Race Reflection Part I

In this episode, I reflect on my first 70.3 race since 2016 and my first big race since having my son (he's currently 5!). I discuss my mindset and perspective or race at the age of 43 and juggling the role of mother and recreational triathlete. It was fantastic to experience Hawaii again and swim, bike, and run, but more thrilling to feel liberated from any external pressures or expectations on time or performance. Take a listen and I would love to hear your thoughts on not chasing old versions of ourselves and fully embracing ourselves at this moment in our lives.

    Representation IS the Mission
“Our personal genius IS a part of our personal mission.” The soul of Gritty Genius and the process of uncovering our personal genius is always tied to our mission in life. When was the last time you reflected on yours? With the close of Latinx/Hispanic Heritage month, I take a moment to honor my mission- of advancing my Latino/a community through representation and creating opportunities for POC. I will always “hold the door open” so that other Latinos, Latinx, and POC will be seen, heard, and valued in spaces where I am. This mission is why I am willing to get out of my comfort zone and dream bigger! Never underestimate what your presence- in the classroom, boardroom, meeting, or office- could mean to someone else. You could be planting a seed that will change the course of their life forever, just like Dr. Thomasa Gonzales did for me.

Marathoner Elizabeth "E" Sanchez: Owning Her Voice, Being an Ancestor, and Shaping the Narrative
What a way to close out 2021 Gritty Genius podcast series with none other than my former high school soccer teammate, badass Latina and marathoner, Elizabeth “E” Sanchez. In this episode, E and I chop it up about how soccer was a catalyst for empowering our identity and smashing gender roles. We talk about owning our voice and representing in spaces where there are, still, too few women have a voice. We bring to light that in the sport of running, and marathoning, there is a need to smash the “thin ideal” body type and embrace all (our) body types. E shares that her career journey is deeply rooted in her desire to create consciousness shift and help create a more empowered narrative for others. I am so honored that E took the time to chat it up on the Gritty Genius podcast. Enjoy and Happy New Year! Bio: Elizabeth Sanchez grew up in Adrian, Michigan, but has been at home in Chicago for the past 17 years, raising her family of three kiddos with her husband while working in sports communications. Her first love is soccer, and she was in the Communications Department at the U.S. Soccer Federation for 15 years, serving as an interpreter, youth national team press officer, media operations officer and overall jackie of all trades. She was one of two venue press officers to manage four matches in the historic Copa America Centenario, where she oversaw three group matches (Lio Messi hat-trick, anyone?) and a semifinal at Soldier Field in 2016. In 2019, she transitioned from the international game to the Chicago Fire Football Club, where she was also hyped into signing up for the Chicago Fire Foundation's Chicago Marathon team. Despite being on the cross country team for two years in high school, she would never ever have called herself a runner, but now, 21 years, three kids and one marathon later, she thinks she just might be. Elizabeth is the sister of a former guest and Mario Aguirre. For inspiration and realness follow Elizabeth on Instagram @chivet

    Our Past is a Roadmap
Don’t know who needs to hear this but it was something on my heart that I needed to check-in on. For this Gritty Genius Hot Minute I share my perspective on how we can view our past as a roadmap and release ourselves from judgement or doubt. While we have the power to create our reality, we are also human. We can learn from where we have been and mistakes we have made, not with judgement but with trust and self-compassion. Everything now is preparing you for something later down the road. See your past as preparation and roadmap to help you more forward with more intention. Thank you always for sharing this little space with me and much love!
