- 36 minutesIs community mapping for crypto the road to fresher, fairer maps?
This week’s The Lay of the Land proof-of-location podcast is with Ariel Seidman, CEO and co-founder of Hivemapper. Listen to the podcast to find out what problem Hivemapper is solving, how it got started and how it’s going.
Hivemapper’s goal is to provide higher quality maps at an affordable price. In our conversation, Hivemapper explains their formula for achieving this goal.
TL;DR
Hivemapper plans to go live at the end of 2022. Hivemapper’s outward-facing dash cams (currently on pre-order) will take pictures of local street views. The dash cam’s location is proven through encrypted GPS and via the Helium hotspot network. Helium’s network uses radio signals to provide internet coverage to IoT devices and record data on the Helium blockchain. For privacy, the dash cam owner’s ID and dash cam location are de-identified. Anyone can own part of the Hivemapper mapping network by using the dash cam to earn the mapping network’s native token, HONEY, or by purchasing HONEY on a cryptocurrency exchange. HONEY runs on the Solana blockchain. Hivemapper Inc. builds APIs on top of the mapping network and The Hivemapper Foundation (a 501(c) independent of Hivemapper Inc. personnel) oversees the governance (technical decisions, economic decisions, and licensing) of the Hivemapper mapping network.

Tyler Mulvihill, co-founder of Consensys company Treum, discusses the proof-of-location solutions being built at ConsenSys. ConsenSys, founded in 2014 by Joseph Lubin, is the world's largest pure-play blockchain company on the planet. Treum brings transparency, traceability and tradability to supply chains, agtech, auctions and non-fungable tokens using the permissionless, ethereum blockchain or a permissioned ethereum instance.
Listen as Tyler recounts stories of the World Wildlife Fund's bait to plate trail tracking wild tuna across the world, verifying organic hemp and ensuring the supply chain for personal protective equipment (PPE) masks during the Covid-19 era.

Internet of things (IoT) technology is often about software. LoRaWan technology is different. It was invented in 2015 and is definitely a hardware play to begin with, then a software/network technology and maybe, one day, in the not-too-distant-future blockchain will run on top of it too. Begin unpacking the new, low cost IoT solution, LoraWan (long-range, low-power, wide-area-network) with Laurens Slats of The Things Network.
