THE RIFF | Are Design Fairs Dead? And, If So, What'll Replace Them?

Surface's own Ryan Waddoups and Fernando Mastrangelo of FMS speak candidly, and at times critically, about the progress, or lack thereof, regarding design fairs. The most compelling part of the dialogue is in what these two imagine for the future of those fairs and the industry they support. Waddoups is a millennial who has established an authoritative voice in the design world via his articles in Surface Magazine and ownership of Surface's Design Dispatch newsletter. Fernando Mastrangelo is an established designer with his ear to the ground for emerging talent in the field. There's no better duo to speculate, optimistically but realistically, about what comes next...

THE COMPANY | Ep. 3 | Leading a Creative Team; how to hire, train, and scale

To scale your career successfully, you’re gonna need a strong team working with you. I see so many artists & business owners put off hiring because they worry it’s not feasible for them. But the reality is that investing time and money in a team is a great way to boost your sales and your reach. Just start small, choose wisely, and find people with skill sets that you don’t have. The right team can make all the difference.

Most important of all, INVEST in the people you hire. I can’t stress this enough. Talk to them, foster their growth, and learn about their own goals for their careers. When you invest in them, you’ll see the best results both professionally and personally.

Today I’m speaking with Ladies & Gentlemen Studio, who made the move from Seattle to New York to take their company to the next level.

They have a diligent method of making their work and making business decisions, and a thoughtfulness about their design that you don’t often find in our fast-paced design industry.

Before we jump in, I also wanted to say that this is the last interview of The Path Season 1. It’s been an incredible season and we’ve received such great feedback from you that we’re excited to return for Season 2 later this year :)

THE COMPANY | Ep. 2 | Selling Art + Design Today; things I wish I would have known

People don’t like to think of art as a business and I get it. It kinda kills the romance. But that’s just not realistic if you want to sustain your career long-term. Some common questions I’ve heard young artists ask when they first start out are things like: How do I get my work in front of people? How do I network? How do I start a business without experience? Social media has altered the answers to some of these questions, and what worked best 20 years ago is usually not the most efficient strategy today. In episode two of The Company, I'm sharing what's worked for me when getting work out into the world.

THE PATH | ADAM PARKER SMITH

Today I’m sitting with Adam Parker Smith whose work I think is freaking genius. He’s a sculptor, prankster, and his work always involves humor.

We’ve been in the game for a long time together but recently Adam’s work has just been everywhere, being widely collected and reaching a high market value for a young artist. So it’s a very interesting time for him even though he’s been at it for well over a decade.

He also has a unique story about how he’s been able to financially sustain his studio which has not been through the traditional route.

Adam also has some great insight on just being an artist today and how many of you may approach your own creative businesses. Let’s dive in.

THE RIFF | FURLOUGHED: how the government shutdown is effecting the design world.

Today I spoke with Christina de Leon, the Associate Curator of Contemporary Latino Design at the Cooper Hewitt. She was gracious enough to be real with me and share her experience during this government shutdown.

We spoke about the irony of museums, which are institutions designed to educate the public about other cultures, being shut down by a government that wants to literally wall off a country with a culture that provides so much influence.

We also got to reminisce a bit about how we met and bonded over our Latino roots. This is my first Riff with a guest so let’s jump in-

THE PATH | ENY LEE PARKER

Eny Lee Parker was deemed the breakout American design star of 2017 by Sight Unseen. I first saw her work at ICFF this year and was super impressed by her terra-cotta lamps.

I started following her on Instagram and also became impressed by her branding and story telling. I wanted to sit down with her because she’s moved up quickly in her career and I wanted to see how she’s been managing all of it.

Eny Makes ceramic furniture, lighting, and jewelry. She’s got a unique style that has it’s its own language and it’s becoming distinctly hers.

I’m excited to share this interview, since we cover a lot of ground, and really get a sense of Eny’s path.
