Around 1,000 years ago, new arrivals reached the shores of Newfoundland. They were the Norse, and on the island they established at least one settlement and met the Indigenous inhabitants.
They predated the arrival of John Cabot by almost 500 years.

When Europeans arrived in Newfoundland, beginning with John Cabot in 1497, the Beothuk saw their land taken, the animals they depended on hunted and harvested, and new diseases introduced that they had no immunity to.
By the 1800s, few Beothuk remained. One was Shanawdithit.
