Whine & Cheese

Joey Breeding, Mike Paulshock and Tyler Smith

It is a love letter to all things whiny and cheesy... from Rites of Spring to Hawthorne Heights, Varsity Blues to 50 First Dates, and everything in between. Listen as the trio of Joey Breeding, Tyler Smith and Mike Paulshock mix and match two of life’s great audio & visual pleasures.

WHINE & CHEESE 58: Eighteen Visions & Zoolander

This week we’re goin’ monk with Eighteen Visions – Vanity & Ben Stiller’s Zoolander. We do a deep dive on some banter from when 18V played Furnace Fest in 2002 and give our thoughts on FASHIONCORE. Go check out the 20th anniversary tour of this record if that’s your thing I guess. We’re all over the place with our favorite scenes from this classic movie, but we both give our best Owen Wilson impressions along the way. This episode is gonna leave you with plenty of things to ponder.

Special thanks to LVAC for the support & Taylor Madison for our artwork.

WHINE & CHEESE 57: Adventures & Adventures of Ford Fairlane

We’re serving up Sambuca milkshakes this week with Adventures – Supersonic Home & The Adventures of Ford Fairlane starring THE DICE MAN. We critique some of the fashion choices of both the band and the movie, particularly Ford’s pajamas. We go down a real “chicken or the egg” scenario when diving deep on some Adventures lyrics. We will also have the Catatonicyouths video of Motley Crue forever stuck in our heads after talking about the Vince Neil cameo in this movie. Let’s dance, snapperheads!

    WHINE & CHEESE 56: Jacob’s Latterman

This week we are covering Latterman’s We Are Still Alive and the 1990 psychological thriller Jacob’s Ladder. For such a special pairing, we’ve brought back Whine & Cheese alumni Matt Bailey, our only 3-time guest (and 2-time guest for that matter). Matt’s life is a bit of a movie, in highschool he beefed with both the goths AND the jocks. We reminisce about the DIY punk scene of the mid-2000s and how there aren’t just many bands like this anymore. Latterman made their mark as the quintessential “all of us sing the chorus!” type punk band. Our movie this week is out of fucking control. It has it all: Vietnam War madness, experimental drugs, tentacles, painful ice baths, and Kyle Gass.

WHINE & CHEESE 55: Fall Out Boy & The Mummy

Back from the dead, we’re talking about Fall Out Boy’s Take This To Your Grave & 1999’s The Mummy. Is FOB our generation’s Beatles? Probably not but we can all agree that Patrick Stump’s taste in hats are hysterical. We are both pin carrying members of the Brendan Fraser Fan Club, so we’ve been wanting to talk about The Mummy on the show for awhile. So many people get set on fire in this one and I’m okay with that. What I’m not okay with is the quicksand man, RIP to my boy Winston Havelock. Tell a friend about this one, we can’t do it by our se-e-e-e-e-elves~

WHINE & CHEESE 54: Counterfit & Knock Off

Busted technology, illness, and Mike being on tour were all working against us but this week we have returned to discuss Counterfit’s Super Amusement Machine For Your Exciting Heart & the JCVD classic(?) Knock Off. We have a handful of feedback type stuff to get into at the top of the show, which was really fun so continue to hit us with your feedback and suggestions. There’s a lot of drummer drama surrounding this band & a band we have covered in the past. The movie was a total clusterfuck, we struggle to make sense of it. Watching it around a month ago definitely doesn’t help our thought process, but the flick was a lot of fun nonetheless. If you’re reading this, check all of your jeans for explosives. Accept no substitutes.

WHINE & CHEESE 53: The Loved Ones 06 / The Loved Ones 09

Kind of weird that it took us this long to cover two things with the same name, huh? Philadelphia’s own, The Loved Ones’ Keep Your Heart is paired up with the 2009 Australian horror film The Loved Ones. This band barely missed us both in our punk journeys, but we appreciate it nonetheless. But seriously, what is Dave Hause even saying in these songs? Keep listening to find out which Loved Ones song rips off Under The Sea. The movie might be too messed up for even us or maybe we’ve gone soft in old age. You be the judge.

WHINE & CHEESE 52: Gospel & The Spy Who Shagged Me

Our theme this week is THE MOON with Gospel’s The Moon Is A Dead World & the 1999 spy comedy film Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me. We consider this record to be our warm, liquid goo phase and talk extensively about the local drugstore Happy Harry’s. Then we take a bit of a dive down Level Plane’s discography while tracing our own individual screamo histories. Joey really struggles to recall which year Gospel played Dude Fest. If you know where to find Adidas LEGACY green track pants with the white stripe & not the black stripe, hit Mike up. Austin Powers, to the surprise of absolutely no one, holds up. We go over our favorite international titles of this movie, which are pretty phenomenal. Spoiler: we absolutely do NOT lose our mojo.

WHINE & CHEESE 51: Bayside & Pain and Gain w/ Jake Clarke

This week we are joined by our good friend Jake Clarke to discuss Bayside’s self-titled album & Michael BAY(side)’s Pain & Gain. We discover early on that we all crossed paths at different Bayside shows long before any of us knew each other. Hit us up if you have answers to any of the following questions: Is Michael Bay Tony Hawk’s cousin? Does The Rock skateboard? Do you want to be our Tony Shaloub? What’s so wrong with being all alone? We take turns doing way too many impressions on this episode with varying degrees of accuracy. Bonus content: Listen til the end to find out Mike’s Peacock login.

Check out Jake’s projects – Quit Your Band While You Still Can, Webbed Wing, & Superheaven.

WHINE & CHEESE 50: Nothing Feels Good & Reality Bites w/ Zia Hiltey

In our big 50th Episode celebration, we finally cover a cornerstone of midwest emo with The Promise Ring’s NOTHING FEELS GOOD & the ultimate Gen X rom-com, Ben Stiller’s REALITY BITES with help from our guest Zia Hiltey.

Listen as we debate something that has been hidden in plain sight regarding The Promise Ring’s lyrics this whole time. Also, Zia mostly just wants to talk about The Joker instead of Ethan Hawke. So grab a Big Gulp and quit your job at the Gap.

WHINE & CHEESE 49: THE SLEEPING VS. RODDY PIPER

This week’s theme is PROPAGANDA! We cover The Sleeping’s Believe What We Tell You & John Carpenter’s They Live. We compare stories about seeing The Sleeping at different colleges long before we knew each other. If anyone knows LITTLE GUY from the comments section of Punknews in like 2007, tell him to hit us up. We get pretty stuck trying to remember all the different sections of MySpace pages and don’t know when to quit. Keep an eye out for the W&C re-release of this album though when we chop n’ screw some tracks. We also reminisce on when we saw John Carpenter throw up the horns at the Keswick Theater. In hindsight, we should’ve rehearsed the fight scene from They Live & uploaded that as some bonus content. Meatloaf = Doug???
