How Can We Embrace Change And Heal? | Paul D. Lowe & Richard Gerver

In this inspiring episode, Paul Lowe welcomes back world-renowned expert, author, and educator Richard Gerver for a deep dive into two of life’s greatest themes: change and healing. Together, they explore the overwhelming sense of powerlessness that often accompanies unexpected change and discuss how shifting our perspective from grandiose expectations to granular daily appreciation can unlock true healing.

Reclaiming Control Over Powerlessness: Fear of change often stems from feeling powerless. Healing and adaptation begin when we stop trying to control every external variable and focus on the small levers of control within our reach.

Embracing Granularity Over Grandiosity: True fulfillment is rarely found in material wealth or status. Lasting peace comes from appreciating the simple, granular moments of existence—such as breathing, noticing nature, and connecting with loved ones.

Vulnerability as Strength: Showing vulnerability in relationships and leadership is not a weakness; it is an essential human quality that fosters trust, authenticity, and deeper emotional connection.

Cultivating Childlike Curiosity: Reconnecting with the open-minded curiosity of a five-year-old allows us to step back from non-stop busyness, adapt to complex challenges, and learn much faster.

Hope in the Human Renaissance: Throughout history, periods of darkness and uncertainty have consistently paved the way for human renaissances driven by creativity, innovation, and the optimism of younger generations.

"Nobody is worried about change if it's something they choose to do... change isn't frightening if we feel we are in control."

"What really changes the way we feel about ourselves is the way we change the way other people feel about themselves."

"Systems and structures change nothing. People do."

"Curiosity is neither an immature trait nor a trait of privileged people... Curiosity has defined humanity since the first time we rubbed sticks together."

"Vulnerability defines the greatest act of love: Are you prepared to strip yourself back and be vulnerable in front of somebody?"

This Human Life – What Matters Most: From Survivor To Advocate | Lyn Smith

Content Warning (CW): This episode discusses themes of sexual assault, which some listeners may find distressing or triggering.

On this inaugural episode of the This Human Life podcast your host, Paul D. Lowe, talks Lyn Smith about three simple words that are actually an umbrella for a range of things: What matters most? In this case, Lyn decides to talk about injustice, both personal and global after being the victim of sexual assaults in her teens.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

The main injustice that affected me stemmed from a couple of nasty childhood experiences. I’m a two-time sexual assault survivor. This was in the 1970s when I was in my teens and I didn’t report it at the time. I only reported it when I was 42 years old.

I was going to go to university to become a veterinarian, but that didn’t happen because my education was interrupted, I went totally off the rails in terms of academia and left school without the qualifications. At 19 I joined the police force, and I think that’s because of the injustice I felt at telling no one about it.

It was shocking to me to see the stats around the amount of women who were making sexual assault claims that were false. That was very disheartening and a bit of a slap in the face for those of us that have genuinely been through that.

I can understand why women don’t report it: A) Are you going to be believed if it genuinely has happened to you. B) You’re going to have to relive it all multiple times in the conversations you have with police officers, medical professionals, as well as in the court room. C) You see such trivial slaps on the wrists given to the perpetrators. It’s horrible to see women still not getting justice today even though women have a louder voice today.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘I could literally tell, or feel, which women were telling the truth or were trying to pull the wool over our eyes.’‘Worldwide the system is still failing women.’‘Women are murdered every week in intimate relationships behind closed doors on the back of a string of domestic violence reports.’‘It affected my future relationships, it also affects your nervous system, you’re living life at high alert all the time which puts stress on the body and brings health implications both physically and mentally.’

Seeking Significance: Why the Need to Feel Seen Is Shaping Your Relationships

We all want to feel like we matter. Most of us just don't say it out loud. Host Paul D Low is joined by Aimee Mosco — author, intuitive channel and co-founder of Intentional Healing Systems — and Kristin Johnson, prize-winning writer, screenwriter and author of the social media essential Ain't "U" Got No Manners, for a conversation that goes right to the heart of one of the six core human needs: significance. From hoarding toilet paper during a pandemic to feeling invisible despite showing up every single day, the discussion gets honest about how the need for validation quietly shapes relationships, identity, and the ladders we choose to climb. There's warmth, laughter, and some genuinely profound moments around pain versus suffering, the wisdom of children, and why turning the lens inward is always where the journey begins.

You are significant. You matter. Just for today, that's enough.

    5 KEY TAKEAWAYS

    1. Significance is one of the six core human needs, yet most people never consciously recognise they're driven by it — and that blind spot creates real friction in relationships.
    2. Seeking validation from external sources places unfair expectations on others. The real work is finding ways to feel significant from within, rather than waiting for the world to confirm it.
    3. Pain is a useful signal telling you something needs to change. Suffering is what happens when you ignore the signal for too long. Recognising the difference is everything.
    4. When significance becomes your entire identity — through a career, a role, a relationship — losing it can feel like losing yourself. Awareness of this is the first line of defence.
    5. Children are natural teachers here. They pursue things with curiosity, fall down, get back up, and stay present. Rebuilding that relationship with play and wonder is a genuine antidote to suffering.

    QUOTES

"It's not necessarily about sources — it's about seeking out ways to feel significant without putting expectations on others."

"It wasn't about them at all. It was about me and how I felt about myself. That was the only way to dig myself out of feeling totally invisible."

"When you lose that significance, you lose your identity — and that can be very painful."

"Suffering means that we've missed the cues. We haven't paid attention to the rung that's missing."

"Just remember that you are significant and you matter. Just for today — that's all that really counts."

This Human Life – Nothing Was Wasted

On this inaugural episode of the This Human Life podcast, your host, Paul D. Lowe, talks to Kristen Johnson and Aimee Mosco about the concept of nothing being wasted in life.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • I can’t tell you how long I’ve spent on a labour-of-love project and expecting a big return – if not financially, then metaphorically or physically – and it didn’t pan out. But it taught me a lot, and I learned something from it.

    • Sometimes when we have expectations, they are potentially not realistic, so we set the stage for failure – for lack of a better word – for not meeting those expectations because they’re not reasonable. We don’t necessarily know that before we take the journey, but that’s how we learn.

    • Awareness plays a huge role in how you frame things. When you take the perspective that nothing is wasted and you look at things from that higher level you may see that your soul/higher wisdom/inner spirit has laid out a path for you. When you’re taking that path, you may not see where it’s leading but it will be productive.

    • It’s easy to say you would have done things differently in hindsight because your perspective is growing in each moment and you’re growing in each moment. If I was faced with the same choices at this point in my life as I was 20 years ago I would probably make a different choice, but I feel like it wouldn’t serve me if I had made a different choice or taken a different path.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘You cannot be the person you are today if you didn’t have previous experiences – you wouldn’t be in this moment without the previous moments.’‘So many people want a shortcut, especially these days when we’re surrounded by technology. Wanting things now and impatience have always been human tendencies.’‘I don’t think thoughts can be wasted.’‘Perfection is impossible to achieve.’

    Words Don't Have Power (3) – Paul D. Lowe & Aimee Mosco

On this episode of the SoulScape Celebrations podcast, host Paul D. Lowe Life Architect & Storyteller – talks once more to Aimee Mosco on the subject of words having no energy or power; they continue down the alphabet, dissecting a word for each letter and seeing what each means to them.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

Some of the perceived atrocities taking place in the world right now have to do with acceptance. There would be no war in this world if everyone accepted everyone else and accepts different viewpoints. There’d be no such thing as strife.

Awareness really does have an impact on our ability to create balance, either immediately or to wait for it to be inspired by universal events.

We come into this world in a body and we have a journey ahead of us, which is very specific to us and the objectives of our inner spirit, which colours everything that we see around us. Our perspective and perception of beauty is so different, and I think it comes back to what our purpose and our soul contract is.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘Everything happens for a reason, even atrocities – perhaps there’s a bigger purpose or a learning.’

‘Balance is something we aim to achieve – the universe is balanced.’

‘A leads to (or impacts) B.’

‘We see through the lens that, ultimately, keeps us on track.’

Words Do Not Have Power (1) – Paul D. Lowe & Aimee Mosco

On this episode of the SoulScape podcast, host Paul D. Lowe - the Soulful Strategist - talks once again with Aimee Mosco, as they focus on the topic of words actually not having energy or power, contrary to what we’ve been told for so long.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

I believe the conversation beneath the conversation is where the impact really comes from. The words themselves are meaningless with out the intent behind them.

We have to be so careful with our words because they convey things. If you’re in a heated moment and you say something, that’s coming from your unfavourable emotions, you don’t want to put that out there. The word is the exclamation point, the final step in the whole process. Make sure you think about what your true intention is and make sure that the words match the energy of your true intentions before you put them out there,

    BEST MOMENTS

‘Which comes first, is it the word or the energy underneath the word, and which creates the greater impact?’

‘Go through the alphabet with someone and see which word comes up first for each letter, it will reflect where your world is at'.

‘This is an important exercise: Choosing words that reflect what we want them to and will hopefully have some impact in the world'.

Living Is An Art: Loving Is The Legacy – Paul D. Lowe & Aimee Mosco

On this episode of the SoulScape podcast, host Paul D. Lowe - the Soulful Strategist – talks to Aimee Mosco about a topic for a book they are co-creating; to be published in October 2025, called ‘Living is an Art: Loving is the Legacy’.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

Assuming we’re all artists, which I think we are, if we put our artistry in a different context under the grand umbrella of creativity or creatorship, then we all get to be creators.

We’re all here, in a body, living and breathing. That’s the foundation of everyone’s journey: We’re here to live. But, if you want to take the high road, loving and legacy become very meaningful and important, they become a compass for how we live.

There’s a value scale to love. At the low end is selfish love – everyone has the need to love, that’s part of our divine lineage, we’re just wired that way. At the other end of the scale is selfless love, which is ultimately supporting greater good, supporting and being in service to others. But, when you’re in service to others you also recognise that you’re in service to yourself.

We have this idea that we see on social media all the time; that we have to get through the hard stuff (our ‘shadow work’) to get to the good stuff. But, the way this book is laid out and the discussions we’ve had about it, I feel like if we reframe the shadow work to be the good stuff, we put ourselves in a different frame of mind as we live. The book feels very ‘new paradigm’.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘We’re all living, so we’re all artists'.

‘What loving means to me is, ultimately, service to all living beings'.

'I want to make sure I’m operating at the highest end of the value scale, whatever it is, whether it’s loving or cleaning my house!’

‘You must love yourself before you can truly love others'.

How Busy Minds Build Better Businesses - Paul D. Lowe & Peter Shankman

On this episode of the SoulScape podcast, host Paul D. Lowe - International Celebrant – talks to Peter Shankman about how to use the opposite of being still, creating a space and quietening the mind, to build better businesses.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • I think there’s a place for zen and tranquillity but, for many people, that’s not the first place they would choose to go. I’m at my calmest when I’m at my most productive. The concept of how my brain works is the premise of “deep work”. When I’m put into a situation that allows me to focus on one specific thing, and only that one thing, I’m at my best by a factor of 100.
    • I was diagnosed with ADHD in my late-30s, growing up in public schools in New York, I’d be told to sit down because I was disrupting the class. There was no diagnosis at that point, I’d always be told by my parents to stop procrastinating and leaving everything until the last minute. What I realise know is that leaving everything until the last minute gives me the dopamine hit that I need to get it done.
    • The problem with labels is that they tend to mis-label, they box people into one category, and people rarely fit into one category. Simply saying you’ve been “diagnosed” – people get diagnosed with cancer. Having a neurodiverse brain means you’re faster, you can do things that other people can’t, as long as you know how to use your brain. I don’t consider that a diagnosis – you’re not diagnosed with winning the lottery!
    • Everything I’ve done, whether it’s been a success or a failure, has been a way to learn from it. I want to work with people who learn and understand that it’s perfectly OK to screw up – it’s supposed to happen. The only downside is not learning from your screw ups, as long as you’re learning you’re fine.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘Studies say that when you’re interrupted, it takes upwards of 22 minutes to get back onto that flow state of work. So, if you get interrupted once an hour, you’re only productive for 20 minutes out of the hour'.

‘Some people who procrastinate do it because it benefits them; it makes their work stronger and more productive'.

‘I’m focused on helping kids understand that just because they have a different brain doesn’t mean they’re broken, it means they’re gifted. If they understand that at an early age it’ll save them a lot of trouble'.

‘You have to learn how to stop giving a fuck about what other people say'.

A Celebration of Who I Am - Paul D. Lowe & Aimee Mosco

On this episode of the SoulScape podcast, host Paul D. Lowe - International Celebrant – talks to Aimee Mosco about the conflicting feelings that arise when thinking about people celebrating themselves.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • My inner child in me shrinks when I hear the words “celebrating who I am”. Why? From a personal perspective I think of birthday parties or anniversaries, the socially acceptable celebration of oneself. I never liked my birthday when I was a kid and I think it’s because my mother almost died when I was born. There’s an opportunity to retrain these thoughts when you become aware of them so I’m seizing that today.
    • A celebration is one thing, but who I am really sends me on a journey. I’ve noticed that when people are resistant to celebrating or talking about who they are, or looking deeply at what a label means, there’s a little piece that attached to self-worth (for good or bad) depending upon your experiences in life.
    • Sometimes, when we say “this is who I am”, it’s sometimes contingent to the labels we put upon ourselves: I’m a man/woman/author/therapist. When we say “who am I” we really have to ask what that means: What makes me a man/woman/author/therapist? It’s a different perspective that invites you to look deeper and maybe shift the labels you use when you say “this is who I am.”
    • There’s a place of vulnerability as we pass through on the road to “I am”, you have to look in the mirror and see every story that you’ve told yourself or has been told to you before you can reach a place of oneness with everything, everyone and the beyond

    BEST MOMENTS

‘It’s important to pay attention when you hear words like “a celebration of who I am”, it’s important to explore them and what it means to be a man/woman and what are the preconceived notions we have when we hear those words, and why'.

‘If we elevate beyond the ego every one of us is the same, we’re a divine being of light, there are no more questions to ask at that point, it’s a statement of fact'.

‘The goal is to learn when it’s most appropriate to be and when it’s most appropriate to do'.

‘Rather than celebrate the fact that you got a promotion/wrote another book, celebrate the fact you’re a divine being of light. That’s a training tool to bring you into a space of not being ruled by fear'.

What Will They Say About You When You're Gone? - Paul D. Lowe & Rabbi Daniel Cohen

On this episode of the SoulScape Celebrations podcast, host Paul D. Lowe - International Celebrant - talks to Rabbi Daniel Cohen about his books, specifically ‘What Will They Say About You When You’re Gone: Creatinve a Life of Legacy’ as well as his career as a Rabbi.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • As you walk out of a funeral you have a moment where you say to yourself “I hope they speak about me the same way they spoke about that individual.” You leave thinking about doing what’s more important in life and how you want to be remembered. Generally, you’re motivated for about 15 minutes until you go back to life as usual.
    • Life isn’t meant to be a highlight film. Every day god puts us on the Earth we have something unique to accomplish. It really hit home for me on a personal level when my mother passed away sudden from a brain aneurism when she was 44. I learned that life can change in an instant. When I got to 44 I began to think a lot more deeply about if I was doing the most that I can with the life that god has given me to try to make a difference in the world around me.
    • You don’t have to believe in god, but I believe there’s something inside all of us, whether it’s a soul or some yearning to know that we matter, we not just here to eat, drink, be merry and die, that I need to love, be loved, be kind, unlock some beauty and sanctity in the world around me. All to often I think we fill our souls with junk food (social media, counterfeit pleasures) accomplishing a lot but not doing much. These things are still important, but what can you do today that’s worthy of future memory?
    • It’s important to know the distinction between exiting vs living. When somebody says: “What’s my goal in life?” That goal shouldn’t be being healthy, that’s a means to accomplishing something, but to be healthy without using the gift of health is missing a unique opportunity.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘I’ve always lived with a sense that life matters, to be grateful for every day, not to wait for a crisis: There’s no atheists in a fox hole.’
‘Life isn’t made up of days, it’s made up of moments'.

‘Anybody who enters my orbit should end up feeling better about themselves than when they entered that orbit'.

‘One of the most important things to be able to do in life is to make distinctions. To live a life of legacy means to be able to distinguish between really happiness vs pleasure'.
