The real occurrences in my life didn’t happen during the big events, but in the little gaps between them. The church meetings and big Christian rallies were not the places where I had life changing experiences. Instead, it was on my days off and during my holidays (when I was far from organisations and institutions) that I felt free enough to be sure that the experiences I had were genuine. You might recognise the name Kika. The friend who I travelled with in Uruguay is the Brazilian friend who sang for me at the end of my last episode.

Chrissie Chevasutt runs a facebook group called Transgender Church. She talks to me about the central role of transgender people. We are fools if we think that tolerating the presence of the marginalised and allowing them space in the margins is enough. By joining them in that space we make them central. And not as an act of grace towards them. It’s an act which benefits us greatly, as it’s the only way to gain the perspective which helps us to truly see ourselves and the world around us.

Sometimes we would like answers to solve the problem of our pain and grief. Sometimes the best answers are more questions. Sometimes when we call out and hear our questions returning to us like an echo from the heart of a fellow traveller on the journey of grief, we find comfort and the strength to continue...
