Episode 129 – Super Scope Games

It’s time for the holidays…and what did people receive as a gift during this time of year back in 1992? The Super Scope 6 of course! Nintendo’s successor to the NES Zapper was a bazooka-shaped monolith of potential. Though the final game library was small, the Super Scope 6 was full of untold gaming possibilities. From arcade ports like Operation Thunderbolt and Terminator 2: The Arcade Game, to Nintendo originals like Battle Clash, Metal Combat and Yoshi’s Safari, Super Scope brought a wave of innovation combined with top notch durability. Today’s episode focuses on the music from the library of Super Scope games. The XVGM Radio guys get a friendly but frazzled visit from co-podcaster RayjKayj of The VGMPorium, as well as discuss Justin’s fond memories playing Tinstar. Plus…Arnold Schwarzenegger himself calls in?! Maybe….or Maybe not. You’ll never know if you don’t click that play episode on our finale to 2025!

Episode 128 – Same Song, Different Arrangement: Phantom Breaker BattleGrounds Ultimate

Mike’s been raving about Phantom Breaker Battle Grounds for almost a decade. The heart-pumping soundtrack, exciting chibi anime beat-em up styled gameplay and intuitive leveling up system is a prime example of a game that should’ve gained more appreciation over the years. When the most recent version of the game, Phantom Breaker Battle Grounds Ultimate came out this year, we knew it was time to FINALLY showcase the music for this game in a proper episode. SO, we decided to bring on a special guest which many will recognize as a familiar voice. In addition, some BIG changes are coming to XVGM Radio, and our guest is here to help ring in the news along with another special guest! This is an episode you absolutely CANNOT miss!

Episode 126 – Human Entertainment: The Musical History

Today on XVGM Radio, we’re taking a look (and listen) to the audio history of Human Entertainment. Formed via a merger between Try Co. Ltd. and Communicate Inc in 1987, Human Entertainment was initially called Sonata, mostly handling ports from larger developers such as Konami and Bandai. After two years of this, 1989 saw the name change to Human Entertainment, where the company began creating their own IPs. Learn about how they created a development school which is where many of their development staff came from, their bankruptcy in 1999, and where many of their more notable staff members ended up continuing on the tradition of making weird, wacky games. Justin and Mike as the question: is a Human Sports Festival played with Humans as the balls? With a surprising mix of both wavetable tunes and redbook audio, there’s a bunch of variety in musical genres to choose from with Human Entertainment and it’s ONLY on XVGM Radio!

Episode 123 – Prison City w/ composer Matt Creamer

Matt Creamer, aka Radd Daddy, aka Norrin Radd, RETURNS to XVGM Radio to talk about his amazing soundtrack for Retroware’s Prison City game. We’ve chat with Matt previously about many of his soundtracks, even had him on one of our live shows before! A true friend to the podcast, Matt isn’t afraid to get into the nitty gritty details about how he carefully crafts his soundtracks. A self proclaimed “puzzle solver” when it comes to music creation, Matt Creamer delves into the new way he composes classic NES style soundtracks, and the XVGM boys grill him on his influences this time around (Groove and industrial metal?! The Batman and Goonies NES OSTs?!) and so much more! Join Matt, Justin and Mike for a long but utterly satisfying chat about Prison City on the latest episode of XVGM Radio!

Episode 122 – Lethal Enforcers I & II (Same Song, Different System)

Marred in 90s era video game controversy, Konami’s Lethal Enforcers series, along with Mortal Kombat, Night Trap, and several other games, had ironic targets on their backs for their innovative, realistic (at the time) graphics involving firing a fake plastic gun at the screen, killing human targets. Years later, the series is best known for pushing buttons in the North American political atmosphere, which is a shame because it SHOULD be known for their amazing soundtracks! Today on XVGM Radio, Justin and Mike go a few rounds with some Lethal Enforcers 1 and 2 tunes, comparing the versions and picking which ones they like the best after their heavy analyzing. Well worth the price of admission, you’ll be firing in quarters like crazy into your phone to reload more amazing tunes full of orchestra synth hits, SNES Midi guitar, along with tons of comparison to other Konami OSTs. This episode has its target set on you, time to hit play!

Episode 121 – Product Placement VGM w/ CRT Soundsystem

Product placement and advertising in video games is a wild, wacky thing. Today on XVGM Radio, Mike and Justin are joined by fellow VGM podcast CRT Soundsystem, where Reese and Tom bring some unique tracks to the mix! The hosts chat about Redline, Fast food chicken preferences, and gamer munchies. The Americans on the podcasts (Mike, Justin and Reese) learn about the aisle of American junk food in Ireland’s grocery stores courtesy of Tom. There’s a Pop Tarts flavor discussion as well as a full on M&Ms breakdown of the characters based on the websites. Is the brown M&M really just Bayonetta? Who’s got the best taste in Pop Tarts on these shows? Is the Frosted Flakes mascot Irish in Ireland? Find out more on this super silly episode of XVGM Radio!
Huge thanks to CRT Soundsystem (Tom and Reese) for joining us! Check out their show on all podcatchers, and give ‘em a rating on Apple!

Episode 120 – Free Picks 6: The Search for 5

Free Picks…the very definition of randomness. Every 20 episodes, Mike and Justin think back to stuff they’re playing, or perhaps pick a track suggested by our Discord members (Thanks ElectricBoogaloo for this month’s pick!) What follows is an episode full of tongue twisters, caller requests from questionable callers and Justin goes all in on Destiny discussion. One COULD call this a “Squeakuel” but it’s best to call it Free Picks 6: The Search For 5!
We’d love to hear what you thought about these random tracks we’ve picked! What was your favorite track?  Shoot us an email at [email protected] or join in on the discussion at: https://www.facebook.com/groups/XVGMradio

Episode 119 – The Sounds of the Sharp X68000

Released in 1987, the Sharp X68000 would lead the way for Japanese computer systems, ending its reign around 1996. Utilizing the Yamaha YM2151 sound chip would make the computer sing some of the best FM synthesis based VGM ever released. Today on XVGM Radio, we’re joined by our third host NikoTengoku to spotlight just a taste of the amazing tunes on this system. Niko falls in love with developer Exact, Mike goes on about songs sounding simple then praises the most simplistic song picked for the show, and Justin takes a call from…EVIL NIKO?! Oops, ALL BANGERS on this one! It’s all on this super fun, super rockin’ episode of XVGM Radio!
