Men det finns en växande skara forskare och experter som varnar för att den där bilden inte alls stämmer. Istället är vi på väg in i den stora stagnationen. Hjärnchip har länge utvecklats inom forskningen, men nu testas nya system i allt fler verkliga försök på människor. För vissa handlar det om hoppet att återfå funktioner som gått förlorade. För andra handlar det om något mer: att förbättra människan och tänja på gränsen för vad kroppen och hjärnan klarar av.

Snart 200 år har gått sedan världens första moderna, offentligt finansierade poliskår grundades i Storbritannien. Idag ser många polisen som en självklar och fundamental del av ett tryggt och ordnat samhälle.

Men det senaste decenniet har polisen ställts inför nya utmaningar. Hot om terrorism, eskalerande gängvåld och ny teknologi som förändrar brottslighetens natur har ökat pressen på verksamheten, samtidigt som det är svårt att behålla och rekrytera ny personal.

Så vad skulle hända med samhället – och med det statliga våldsmonopolet – om polisen slutar fungera?

Krig och förföljelse är inte längre de enda hoten som driver folk på flykt. Torka, extrem hetta, stigande havsnivåer och missväxt kan snart vara bland de främsta skälen till att människor tvingas överge sina hemvister. Men klimatflyktingarnas rättigheter är oklara. De omfattas inte av Flyktingkonventionen, och gränsdragningarna är svåra eftersom det ofta finns flera orsaker till att man måste söka skydd. Juridiska svårigheter hindrar dock inte det faktum att hundratals miljoner snart kan befinna sig på flykt undan klimatet – och att vi kommer behöva samsas om en betydligt mindre del av jordens yta än idag.

Om Barnmördarkorset

Barnmördarkorset utanför Ödeshög sägs vara en hemsökt plats. På 1800-talet bodde enligt myten en prostituerad kvinna där som dränkte sina barn och hängde upp kropparna i en stor ek. Sedan dess har folk vittnat om oförklarliga upplevelser vid platsen.

År 2002 kom etnologistudenterna Mathilda Kulle, Billy Varg och Armin Gavran till Barnmördarkorset för att göra ett fältarbete. De försvann spårlöst. Kropparna återfanns aldrig.

År 2025 får poddprofilen Lydia Nordin ett anonymt brev med studenternas ljudinspelningar från fältarbetet vid Barnmördarkorset. Kommer vi nu kunna förstå vad som egentligen hände?

I tusentals år har människor trott på det övernaturliga, och på ett liv efter detta. Med naturvetenskapens framgångar kom de idéerna att utmanas. Idag menar många att medvetandet är en produkt av hjärnan, som upphör att existera i samma stund som kroppen dör. Men bland materialisterna och skeptikerna finns det forskare som menar att medvetandet visst kan överleva kroppen, och att paranormala fenomen kan vara verkliga.
