Debate This! is a podcast where grown men argue about video games and comics like kids on a playground. Each episode, hosts Matt Cole, Kyle Harper, Andrew Henderson, and Todd Thomas will debate meaningless topics, like which of Dr Robotnik's inventions could have been a legitimate investment, or which of the Koopa Kids should be in line for the crown. In this show, no one is right, but someone is definitely wrong.
Happy New Year Nerds! It's our podcast house-rule that we always take the first week of the year off. Usually we upload a trailer and season preview, but that's coming next week! This week, we have a very special live show recording.
In October of 2024, we teamed up with some other podcast friends to host a round of Family Feud at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo. Jokes were made, hosts were embarassed, pride was forfeited. This is that recording.

Whether you say "Happy Honda Days!" or "Merry Chrysler!" you surely know that gift-giving is the reason for the season. That's why we're wrapping up 2024 with our annual peripheral gift exchange! This year we have teamed up with the folks at Dolly Parton HQ to help spread the cheer to every child in America! (*Please note, Dolly Parton is in no way involved with Debate This! and all opinions expressed within this podcast are not endorsed by real life Dolly Parton.*)
Kyle is circling back to our first episode of the season. Andrew is optimizing work flows for the children. Matt is committing crime.

The last month of the year calls for a hoard of annual, year-end traditions. For some, that may involve decorating evergreen pines, for others, the estimation of Q4 tax payments, but for those of us of a certain generation, the last month of the year can mean only one thing: Spotify Wrapped. For those uninitiated, Spotify users receive a fun little slide show showcasing what songs they listened to most this year. It's all fun and games except this year, Spotify did a bad job. Enter the nerds at DT!HQ who have tasked us with making Spotify look better. To do that, they've asked us to put our heads together and brainstorm: "What's the worst 'Wrapped' report you could possibly get at the end of the year?"
Matt's doing movies. Todd's doing video games. Kyle's doing everything else.

This month, we are diving into the entire story of the game franchise former Presidential candidate Joseph Lieberman doesn't want you to play, it's Mortal Kombat! For a property that's got more timelines than the MCU, it's actually pretty amazing how consistent Mortal Kombat is about its lore. True, the story is absolute bananas, but those bananas are dedicated to a singular throughline more so than most other video game franchises.

At the time of this episode's release, we're only a few weeks removed from the Mike Tyson v Jake Paul boxing match. Millions of users tried to watch this fight on Netflix, but most were thwarted by shoddy broadcast connections. Whether folks watched the fight live or not, almost all were dissapointed with the outcome. This bout with a 31-year age gap left a lot to be desired, and we here at DT!HQ are going to give the people what they desire. With that goal in mind, we've set out today to determine "which video game character would be the best to fight Jake Paul?"
Todd suggests we fight fire with fire and billionaire with billionaire. Andrew suggests we make everyone in the room uncomfortable. Kyle suggests the void.

We're in the back half of November and that puts us squarely in "The Holidays." There's family, there's friendship, there's food, there's gifts, and there's the inevitable awkward conversation you'll have introducing your family to your new partner. We here at DT!HQ sympathize with those of you bringing a new relationship home this holiday season. To help acclimate you to this inevitable confrontation, we're putting on our pretend hats and theorizing over potential family dinner nightmare scenarios. So grab a napkin and pass the potatoes because this week we're debating "Who is the worst DC Comics character to bring home for the holidays?"
Kyle is really stretching the definition of "manic pixie dream girl" this week. Andrew is going to make you uncomfortable and give your grandma a heart attack this week. Also this week, Matt gives his thoughts on child rearing.

It is the distant future of 2022 A.D. Technology has advanced to the point where fully immersive virtual reality experiences are not only possible, but readily available to the average consumer. In November of 2022, the newest video game sensation, Sword Art Online, has just released and has taken Japan by storm. Thousands line up on launch day to play this immersive massively multiplayer online RPG (MMORPG).
The wildest part? Not even a single critic has acclaimed this game. The second wildest part? Following its first few hours, the initial 10,000 people logged into the game suddenly are unable to log out for...reasons?

"Remember, remember, the 5th of November," or whatever that guy in the mask said. On account of today being a relatively important day in world history, we decided to record an episode relatively based on world history! That little poem at the beginning of the paragraph was made famous by Alan Moore's V for Vendetta, a graphic novel based on a historical event. With that in mind, we're on a mission to write our own graphic novels! Specifically, we're looking for the best historical event to put to illustrated print.
Matt is getting surprisingly heady with his answer. Andrew is getting surprisingly culty with his answer. And we decided to bring in a guest who actually knows history, so Eric Silver is getting surprisingly heisty with his answer.

You're traveling on the Spooktacular Express through another dimension. A dimension not only of sight and sound, but of mind. A journey into a wondrous land whose boundaries are that of imagination. That's a signpost up ahead! your next stop: the Debate This Zone! That's right, we're finally doing a Twilight Zone episode. But this week, we're crafting our own nightmares. So, if you were to wake up in the DT! Twilight Zone and everything was based on your worst nightmares, what would Marvel Studios announce next?
Todd is putting all his effort into making Kang the Conqueror a thing. Matt is reading old Marvel spin-offs that shouldn't exist. Kyle is doing an AI thing and honestly it's horrifying.

Vault Hunters, Space Capitalism, and eldritch horrors locked behind arcane gates? It's cute that you all think you're the heroes of this little adventure, but you're not. Welcome to Pandora, kiddos. That's right, we're diving exploding gun-first into the looter shooter that built the genre all thanks to our wonderful support of Butt Thwomp Nation member, Sharkbait!
It's deep lore, character explanations, and a life lesson about how there's probably a reason why an ancient civilization sacrificed their entire society to lock a something called "The Destroyer" behind a gate, so maybe you don't open that gate, yeah? Strap in, choose a vault hunter, decide on a skill tree specialization, change your mind and respec when it doesn't work out well, and get ready to say the word "fustercluck" at least once!
