    The Ghosts of Alcatraz Island

Just off the coast of San Francisco is a place with a tumultuous history known as the Rock–not to be mistaken for Dwayne "the Rock" Johnson, the actor we all know and love.

Alcatraz Island is home to the former federal Alcatraz Prison, where thousands of the worst criminals the nation had to offer were housed. But the prison's been closed for years, and what remains on the Rock today are its historical buildings and the ghosts of resident’s past.

So pack your bags and grab your masks, today we're going to do some time on Alcatraz.

Carroll Deering: A Ghost Ship Mystery

Just off the coast of North Carolina, along the outer banks is an area of treacherous waters where the cold Labrador current meets the warm waters of the gulf stream. Strong offshore winds help create a spot for low and high pressure weather systems to collide. Since the 1500s, sailors have been wary of the area, and these waters have earned the nickname graveyard of the Atlantic due to the high number of shipwrecks and countless human lives lost in the region.

It was in these very waters that the Carroll A. Deering was found, with no crew, no lifeboats and no sign of what had happened. This episode covers the mysterious story of the ghost ship, the Carroll Deering.

    Bobby Mackey's Bar, Wilder, Kentucky.

Today we're going to have a look at a listeners request, the so called 'Bobby Mackey Nightclub and Honkytonk, you might be asking if we just made those two words up but no, in Kentucky they get to say just about anything they want.

So yes, a 'honkytonk' is a real thing, that basically just means a bar where self-proclaimed hilly billy music is played, sometimes with piano accompaniment. The piano itself is also sometimes called a honkytonk.

But enough of that, as usual, we're not here to talk about country music, but ghosts. And Bobby Mackey's has quite a collection of them. Some say it even has a door to hell.

I wonder if you have to pay extra for that.

Ghosts at The Moon River Brewing Company, Savannah, Georgia

Today we’ve got, as Willie Nelson sang, “Georgia on our mind!” If you are too young to remember that song, you should look it up—it's a classic.

Specifically, we are going to take a look at the old City Hotel building in Savannah Georgia that is now home to the Moon River Brewing Company. Built all the way back in 1821, this building’s long, sometimes bizarre—sometimes sad, history has given it a fair few ghostly inhabitants that to this very day like to hang around the Brew Company’s beer taps and scare its drunken inhabitants sober every once in a while.

Murder, Mystery and Ghosts in Wolfsegg Castle, Germany

In the countryside of Bavaria, Germany, towering on a hill and overlooking the remote village of Wolfsegg, lies Wolfsegg Castle. Built in the 13th century, the castle and the surrounding forest were initially intended to be a haven for tranquility. Well, psych! – in 1969 the parapsychologist Hans Holzer and his Medium believed and “confirmed” the legend of “The White Lady from Wolfsegg” to be true... allegedly.

The Cock Lane Ghost, London, UK

Nearly a hundred years before the modern spiritualism movement swept the globe and the infamous Fox sisters fooled a whole community with their toe-clicking séances, another ghostly phenomenon shook 18th century London. It’s a story filled with sex, lies, scandal, and murder, that almost ended with an innocent man swinging from a rope. Today we are talking about the Cock Lane Ghost.

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow & the Headless Horseman

It is said that in 1776, at the Battle of the White Plains during the American Revolutionary War, a Hessian soldier on horseback, fighting for the British, had his head blown clear off by a cannonball. Imagine it, a bowling ball of iron crashing through your skull. You’ve seen watermelons get smashed with a sledge hammer, right? Same thing really.

And while on most days this wouldn’t really be polite conversation, this is The Lady Dicks, where we indulge our dark side a little bit and talk about a few gruesome and gory stories. And of those stories, few are as iconic as the story of the Headless Horseman from the Legend of Sleepy Hollow

The Ghost Town of Old Cahawba, Alabama

Today we are talking more about a ghost town with more of a spooky history than a town famous for its ghosts. The remnants of Cahawba (pronounced ca-ha-ba), now an archaeological park, are located in the deep south of Alabama, and like its catchphrase says, it is a ghost town “cloaked in mystery.”

In the 19th century, Cahawba was part of one of the richest counties in the entire United States but today its only inhabitants are the unmarked graves of hundreds of those that were enslaved. Their memories haunt Cahawba and those who visit it to this very day.
