• A new online magazine for Canadian Podcasters has launched. It’s called Canadian Podcaster, and it’s free - coming with a podcast, too. The goal of the publication is to share the microphone with podcasters from across Canada, sharing voices, encouragement and tools to build the Canadian podcast community. It’s from Dave Campbell’s True Media Solutions.

• DeepCast Pro has rebranded to DeepCast Creator. The company has announced Podsites, a turnkey website solution, and new investors.
• Amazon’s Wondery has cut what the company calls “a small number” of jobs - though one person speaking to Reuters suggests the number of affected people is “dozens and dozens”, which Amazon denies. Both content and advertising teams have been affected. This is in addition to the closure of its operations in Brazil and Mexico, a story Podnews broke on Feb 13.

• The average age of CNN viewers is 67, and FOX News viewers are even older, at 69. But the age profile of listeners to news podcasts is similar to the US population average: a younger audience meaning real opportunity for advertisers. That’s one of the findings of The News Podcast Consumer, new data released by Sounds Profitable this week with National Public Media, focusing on the US’s second-most popular podcast genre. • YouTube released a new headline data point, suggesting that there were more than 1 billion viewers of podcast content a month in January. It also repeated that 400 million monthly hours of podcast watching were consumed on TV sets.
  • Putting the 1 billion number in context, Spotify claimed just 120mn monthly podcast listeners in November. Apple Podcasts is likely to be smaller in terms of monthly listeners, according to Podtrac in Jan 2023: but Apple Podcasts had a significantly higher share of downloads.
  • Worth remembering, too, that a listener to a second of “podcast” content on YouTube - even automatically-played content - will count towards the 1 billion figure, irrespective of the amount of downloads they make, or the time they spend with podcasts. Reach doesn’t translate to time spent. However, Edison Research said in Oct 2024 that, of all the podcast platforms, YouTube was used “most often” to listen to podcasts.
  • We wondered what YouTube considered a “podcast” to be. A YouTube spokesperson told us that the company follows the lead of creators marking a playlist as a “podcast” when they upload. The YouTube Podcasts homepage in the US, as one example, includes full TV news shows like NBC Nightly News and PBS NewsHour, which both broadcasters have marked as a “podcast” - but there are audio podcasts for NBC Nightly News and PBS News Hour as well. Australia’s podcasts homepage includes individual news stories from 7NEWS, which are in a YouTube playlist called 7NEWS Just In, but there’s also a 7NEWS Just In audio podcast, too.
• YouTube’s blog post was authored by Tim Katz. Who’s he? He describes himself as “VP, Partnerships, Podcasts”. That’s the first outing for this job title; on LinkedIn, he’s “Director, Head of Sports + News Partnerships”; in news coverage in 2023, he was “Director and Global Head of Responsibility”; and in 2024, he was “Global Director of Responsibility and Leader for the Canada and Latin America region”. We don’t see any use of this podcasting job title until this announcement.
  • Katz is interviewed (as “Vice President for Partnerships”) in Bloomberg. The YouTube podcast trend “existed but it was a matter of us pouring some gas on it,” he said.
• Some parts of the industry give notes of caution.
  • Transistor’s Justin Jackson believes, in a personal blog post, that the podcast industry is fundamentally misdiagnosing YouTube's role in consumers' lives and overestimating the benefits it will get from the platform.
  • Wondery’s founder Hernan Lopez suggests to keep in mind the bigger picture. “Of note, [YouTube] cited 400 million monthly hours of podcast watching on TV sets —but that's against 30 billion hours+ of [overall] YouTube time spent on TV sets.” He adds that the oft-quoted “$2bn” annual figure severely underestimates the total size of the podcast market (as it doesn’t count international, subscription, or video).

• Heavyweight is to return, as Jonathan Goldstein and his team of producers join Malcolm Gladwell’s Pushkin Industries. The show will return later this year; it was with Gimlet, becoming a Spotify exclusive in Nov 2021. Spotify cancelled the show in Dec 2023.
• Average RPM (revenue per thousand views) for YouTube Shorts is thirty times smaller than for full length videos, according to Digiday. One video creator suggests they earn $5.50 for long-form videos, but just $0.18 for Shorts. The article suggests some creators feel forced into generating Shorts content to please the YouTube algorithm.

• Breaking: Subscription-based podcast and audiobook company Podimo has hit 1 million paid global subscribers, the company announced this morning. The five year-old company is profitable in three of its markets, and operates in Europe and Latin America.
• Audiochuck, the podcast company run by Ashley Flowers, has received $40mn in investment from the Chernin Group. The company turned a profit of $45mn last year, reports Bloomberg. She’s looking to expand her staff to 130.
• Dan Bongino, who had Donald Trump on his podcast before the election, has been named the deputy director of the FBI. The Dan Bongino Show does around 322,000 downloads per episode, as well as being syndicated across radio stations in the US, as a replacement for Rush Limbaugh. “We extend our heartfelt congratulations,” said Cumulus Media. “Dan has entertained and informed tens of millions of listeners every day and we are grateful for our successful partnership. We look forward to welcoming Dan back in the future.” His last show will be Friday, March 14th.

• After last year’s Podnews Report Card highlighted the difficulty of submitting a show to Apple Podcasts, Apple has fixed things - rolling out a new, streamlined, process to automatically submit a show for creators using selected podcast hosts. It removes the requirement to open an Apple account first. The launch podcast hosts are: Audioboom, Audiomeans, Ausha, Blubrry, Buzzsprout, Captivate, Castos, Hubhopper, Libsyn, Pinecast, Podbean, Podspace and Transistor.
  • Creators can then claim their show in Apple Podcasts Connect at a later date, should they want to. There is a new, streamlined process for that, using a token to place in your RSS feed. The new process also handles transferral of podcasts from one account to another.
  • The existing method of submitting a show isn’t going away, if you’re on other hosts.
• The clarity of responses to the Podnews Report Card last year was clear - with creators and publishers saying the Apple Podcasts submission process was “awfully complicated” with “too many hoops”, that the account requirement was “ridiculous and unnecessary”, and that it was particularly bad for “people who are new to podcasting”. We shared all the responses with Apple last year, and are delighted to see significant change, which should benefit the entire industry. Please, if you’ve not yet done it, complete the Podnews Report Card this year: and who knows what we can accomplish this time around.
• Edison Research released the Top 25 Podcasts in the UK for Q4/2024. News podcasts did well this quarter, which included the US Presidential Election. The BBC has the most titles in the list overall, though Goalhanger Podcasts has three shows in the top 5.

• There are more ads in podcasts than ever, says Magellan AI, which released its Quarterly Benchmark Report for Q4/2024. Average advertiser ad load increased over 20% year-on-year (but is still significantly less than broadcast radio, we’d add). The data shows a y-on-y ad-spend increase of 19%; and a 10% q-on-q increase in the number of brands advertising on podcasts.
• AIR released its 2025 Rate Guide, with updated benchmark freelance rates for producers, sound designers, story editors, fact-checkers, and researchers in the US audio industry.
• Adam Curry’s new project Godcaster has been launched. The tool allows Christian podcasts hosted anywhere to benefit from live streaming, funding tools and other Podcasting 2.0 features.

• First look: Branded podcasts work - listeners like the brand more after listening to a branded podcast - shows that both keep their attention and that they would recommend to others. That’s the finding of the new 2025 Benchmark Report on Branded Podcasts released today by Signal Hill Insights. The research, based on survey responses from more than 15,000 podcast listeners, gives a number of strong reasons why brands should be investing more in podcasts.
• First look: SiriusXM has just announced that it is to expand its SiriusXM Podcasts+ premium subscription to Spotify, YouTube Music, and other podcast apps via SupportingCast. “This expansion brings SiriusXM Podcasts+ benefits – including ad-free listening to new episodes, exclusive bonus content, and early access to new episodes of popular shows – to all major podcast platforms.” (You can also subscribe directly with Apple Podcasts).

• The Podcast Academy has announced the nominees for the fifth annual ceremony of The Ambies. The show will be on Monday Mar 31 in Chicago, and will be hosted by comedian and podcaster Tig Notaro.
• It’s our chance to see one of Spotify’s new Creator Milestone Awards (Jan 28) close-up. Rusty Quill’s audio drama series The Magnus Archives surpassed 100 million downloads, and the team picked up the award from Spotify London last week.
