• CBC has released its spring/summer 2026 podcast slate. New podcasts include a comedy podcast hosted by musician Donovan Woods and Tom Power of CBC’s Q - and a new investigative series into an AI tool that claims it's solving crimes.
• On our story yesterday of the cloned podcasts: podcast lawyer Lindsay Bowen tells us that he believes some of the original podcast owners could have a case for copyright infringement, and either trademark infringement or a violation of the Lanham Act's prohibition against passing off. But he also warns podcast hosting companies and podcast directories need to get their house in order too: "Every hosting platform —or anyone who hosts user uploaded material available in the United States — must have a DMCA designated agent listed in the directory of the US Copyright Office. Otherwise, they can’t claim protection of the DMCA’s “Safe Harbor,” and could be liable for a contributory infringement lawsuit against them."
• We're sure that Dr Nathan Pali's thinly disguised versions of The Rest Is History are totally above board? At least it's not AI-generated: when we listened to one of the podcasts, we noticed this history podcaster was incapable of pronouncing the word Carthaginian. Or of editing.

• A new podcast studio, Light Knot Studios, is copying the names and designs of 75 successful history podcasts to confuse listeners and attract ad revenue. It was first spotted over the weekend by Dirk from the History of the Germans podcast (using PodSEO, who advertised with us a few weeks ago). He told Podnews: "We all have competition. But, if listeners look for History of the Germans and they stumble on this [visual copy] instead, they'll be confused and will think it's not worth listening to. We're all struggling hard for the first listen. It's very irritating."
  • Legally, this is a little like Coming to America's "McDowell's restaurant". The law against passing off - “stopping one trader from misrepresenting goods and services as being the goods and services of another” - isn't, actually, something that copyright or trademark law covers. Since the audio hasn't been copied, it might be tricky to convince individual podcast platforms to take action. (Our advice about how to report a pirated podcast isn't going to be wholly useful for this).
  • The company is based in New York State. The owner of Light Knot Studios is LinkedByte Corporation, which also runs an audiobook app brand Fable FM and a book summariser Winkist. They're all run by Ibnul Jaif Farabi, and uses a post office box in East Harlem, NYC. Farabi has commented on Reddit (using an account that has been used by him since late December). He's unrepentant: "F(-) you lot because you don't like competitions. If your entire business model is being threatened by one person using AI agents, then you need to adapt. Otherwise, perish."
  • The company hosts its podcasts on RSS.com, and used RSS's PAID platform to earn revenue from ads inside the podcasts. Light Knot publishes short, daily podcasts produced by AI, to maximise the revenue it can earn; by default, there are two ads placed as preroll, and two ads placed as postroll. RSS keeps 30% of the revenue. RSS appears to have turned off monetisation, but surprisingly the company has not removed most of the podcasts. A spokesperson told us, in a statement: "We ... [do not support] content designed to mislead listeners or infringe the rights of legitimate creators. That has no place on RSS.com. ... We are continuing to assess the remaining shows individually. Rights holders and their legal representatives can reach us at [email protected]: formal notices, including DMCA submissions, allow for the fastest resolution." Breaking: they were removed as Podnews finished its publication process.
• Iran is currently in the news, but even with serious economic hurdles and internet restrictions, there are more than 10.5 million podcast listeners in the country; and more than 9,000 Persian-language podcasts. • The Independent Podcast Awards 2026 is open for for entry. This is the fourth year of the awards, which have so far attracted more than 1,400 entries. You have until early June to get your entries in, but the sooner the better; use code PODNEWS10 to save on your entry fee.

• How are podcasts doing on Netflix? Independent measurement company Samba TV posted data on Netflix Podcasts, including a podcast ranker. The company says that 13% of Netflix households (that's 10mn households) watched at least 1 cumulative minute of a Netflix podcast in Q1/26.
  • There’s really only one runaway success on Netflix for now - it’s The Breakfast Club, which is responsible for 40% of all podcast views on the platform, and has 3x the views of the #2 title, a Netflix companion podcast for Bridgerton. Almost half of Breakfast Club viewers watch the show within 48 hours of an episode’s release.
  • (Caution: the 13% number above is a figure spanning three months, rather than the usual one-month period. The company only monitors smart TVs, not phones. This doesn't suggest these people watched a podcast for at least a minute, just that in total they've watched at least a minute of podcasts in a three month period.)
• Exclusive: The Podcast Show London has announced Global and iHeartPodcasts as headline partners for the event next month. This year, Global’s presence will place a particular focus on Global Studios.

• Podcast revenue for Patreon has increased by a third in the past year, up to $629mn in 2025. Patreon has published more details of the shift it's seeing. 47,000 podcasters are now earning income from 7.6 million patrons, the company says. Some of those include you - our many supporters of Podnews through Patreon, which keeps us free for everyone. Thank you.
• Podtrac released its March rankers. Publishers were up month-on-month (February has 28 days and March 31, so you'd hope so); but many publishers are down year-on-year. Versant is a new publisher to the rankings, at #13.
• A pop-up bookshop is about to launch in New York City - but it’s the first bookshop in the world that won't sell any books. The bookless bookstore is being opened on May 1 by Audible. In the Audible Story House, you’ll be able to browse audio books, experience Dolby Atmos, find a pop-up café, and more; it’ll be in 260 Bowery.

Spotify has launched Prompted Playlist for Podcasts, a tool that lets you build podcast playlists just by asking for something - like "Create a podcast playlist with the biggest entertainment news". The tool is available for Premium users in English in selected countries. We gave it a go, and we approve of its top choices.
  • Spotify’s article says that “more than 34 million podcasts are discovered for the first time every week on Spotify” - so anything that helps get new shows found will benefit us.
• George Soros’s Soros Fund Management is investing into MeidasTouch Network, the owner of The MeidasTouch Podcast. Terms weren't given. The investment company became the largest shareholder in Audacy in February; and invested in Crooked Media in 2022.

• We’ve seen the data suggesting it’s only the #3 most popular podcast app these days: but Apple Podcasts can still have a real effect when the editorial team highlight shows on its front page. One podcast says it saw 61,000 downloads in a single day after it was promoted. “What I Survived” is an independent podcast from Queensland, Australia, and got an editorial feature on Apple Podcasts at launch. (Our list of all the podcast directories includes the page to submit your show to the Apple Podcasts editorial team).
• Look at the US podcast charts, and there’s plenty of sports shows in the top 20. But in Latin America - countries like Argentina or Mexico - there are none in the top 200! So, why haven’t sports podcasts taken off in Latin America? There’s plenty of reasons, suggests Genuina Media; the company also has a compelling reason why this is likely to change this year.
• Never Not Funny, the Jimmy Pardo Podcast, is to celebrate its twenty-year anniversary this Saturday with an eight-hour livestream. The show started in 2006, recorded from Pardo’s dining table; and has produced video episodes since 2008.

• Good news from TuneIn: after closing podcast submissions in Feb 2024, TuneIn now appears to be accepting new podcast listings once more. You can just use TuneIn's broadcaster portal; the directory has all of our shows there (here's our daily podcast). The directory is the default way into Tesla cars, Sonos speakers and many more places; when we last covered TuneIn in Dec 2024, we revealed mass layoffs at the company; but it was acquired by radio and podcast producer Stingray in Nov 2025.
• Exclusive: Libsyn and Buzzsprout have signed up with Apple Podcasts to distribute HLS video.
  • Brendan Monaghan, President & CEO, Libsyn, said: “We view video as a natural progression for podcasting — giving creators more ways to engage audiences, deepen storytelling, and grow their businesses.   • All top-10 podcast hosting companies now support HLS video, with one exception: Spotify for Creators/Megaphone. (Users of Triton Digital’s Spreaker can upgrade to Omny Studio). Most of these hosting companies, however, are not publishing pricing for video hosting, and support appears to be invite-only.
• Twenty years ago this week, Podcast Generator, a free podcast hosting tool, was released. Used by more than 25,000 podcasts, Alberto Betella looks back at the tool and what it looked like in a full history. It’s a fascinating view of some of the early days of podcast history.

• OpenAI has bought the TBPN podcast, the Wall Street Journal reports. The Financial Times says the purchase price is in the “low hundreds of millions”. If true, it’s likely that this is one of the biggest deals for a podcast in the medium’s history (Joe Rogan’s renewal at Spotify being $250mn in 2024). TBPN has eleven staff, has around 70,000 viewers per daily episode, and is reported to generate $30mn in revenue this year; it will remain editorially independent, the show says in a statement. The live tech show, which is also available as a relatively small podcast, “treats Silicon Valley like a sports league”, says Tubefilter.
• Newsletter platform Beehiiv has launched a full podcast hosting platform.. It contains full transcripts, distributes to Apple, Spotify and more, and comes with a full website; analytics are built “to IAB standards”, and you can bundle your podcast for paying subscribers to your newsletter; Beehiiv will take no additional fees. CEO Tyler Denk recently shared that Q1 2026 was beehiiv’s best quarter in history, as the company added $4.5M ARR, sent more than 10 billion emails, and crossed 50,000 active users.

  • A number of shows have moved over to Beehiiv with the launch, including Tasteland, Womansplain, and AI Report.
  • Podnews has also learnt that Beehiiv is to hire a Head of Podcasts.
• Red Seat Ventures has launched its own invitation-only podcast hosting company, called Speakeasy. It offers hosting, ad-supported monetization, AI-powered analytics and support for RSS, HLS and video. It also integrates Supercast, the membership platform acquired in February.

• Buzzsprout launched free automatic transcripts for all their hosting customers using a current paid plan. Transcripts appear in Apple Podcasts, Pocket Casts, and other apps. It has a transcript editor to help fix any words before publishing, and (unlike Apple Podcasts's transcriber) will correctly identify different speakers. The company has also overhauled its chapters tool to work within the transcript editor.
  • Buzzsprout has also added a welcome feature to its fanmail service: you can now reply to people who send fanmail text messages to you. That’s in addition to a new voicemail service, which was added this week too.
• Eddy Cue from Apple spoke with technology podcast TBPN, and the interview is in video in the show on Apple Podcasts. TBPN’s podcast host, Transistor, has posted about the show - and has used an embedded video from Apple Podcasts in its blog, which we didn’t realise you could do. Until now.
• The shortlist for the Australian Audio Awards has been released. The awards, which are brand new this year, have a number of categories for podcasts.
