• “No clear audience gain ... unvetted, untested, and unproven proprietary metrics.” In a piece about video on Spotify, Sounds Profitable’s Bryan Barletta writes: “In its current state, I urge the podcast industry not to take part in Spotify Video and Streaming Audio as it stands to have a massive and long-term negative revenue and reputational impact for those involved.”

• Ashley Carman covers Spotify music takedowns for podcasters in her Soundbite newsletter this week. It’s long been the case that Spotify has removed any use of commercial music in podcasts, regardless of any licence that podcasters have acquired. Ashley reports a recent change in Spotify’s tools - Podnews understand that creators now get eight days to provide more information, episodes can now remain on the platform if the content is correctly licensed, and there is now an appeals process.

• In the UK, three podcast production companies have announced a merger. Platform Media, Listen and Goldhawk - all owned by PodX - are to merge under the Platform Media name, dubbed a “podcast supergroup”. It will continue to use Listen, Goldhawk and Platform Media’s Folding Pocket brands as content labels. The company claims eight-figure revenues and 70% year-on-year growth.
• Acast has partnered with Supercast to offer paid subscription tools. They’ll be available to all Acast podcasters, allowing them to easily sell exclusive audio and video content, ad-free feeds, and the ability to engage with other fans.
• PodcastOne has seen video views “surge 218% year-over-year”. The company posts to Rumble and Substack as well as YouTube and Spotify.

The Google Audio News product on mobile phones and smart speakers is driving significant extra traffic - and, we can reveal today, we’re not the only company who has noticed.
• Podtrac released its March US podcast rankings. Among the most popular podcasts, NPR News Now has overtaken The Daily; and VINCE has debuted into the chart at #7 - the show is by Vince Coglianese, and has taken over Dan Bongino’s feed.
• Livewire published the top podcast hosting companies for February, based on released episodes. Spotify for Creators posted a ten-month high; #2 Spreaker posted a record number of new episodes, and Buzzsprout remains on a two-year high at #3. Libsyn posted another all-time low.

Speaking at Evolutions in Chicago, Steven Goldstein and Jay Nachlis revealed that 77% of podcast consumers are consuming both audio and video, and that social media has overtaken recommendations from friends and family as the most popular way to discover podcasts.

• As covered yesterday, Oxford Road published its white paper containing the definition of podcasting, including a study of consumers. The study reveals that 72% of US podcast listeners now define the traditionally audio-only medium as being inexorably linked to video. What’s more, 52% say that videos of people discussing topics – available only on YouTube – still qualify as podcasts even without an audio-only component.

• The Podnews Report Card results for 2025 were released on stage at Evolutions, with comments and scores by creators about the podcast platforms we all use. YouTube scored significantly higher for all categories, though creators expressed concern about walled gardens and about perceived complication getting listed. Apple continued to be creators’ favourite platform, though in the apps category, the independent podcast app Pocket Casts was #2. We’ve published the full results here.
• What is a podcast? Dan Granger spoke at Evolutions, offering a new definition for podcasting. “The stakes are nothing less than the sustainability of the entire channel.“ The company has published a whitepaper for download; and, in The Media Roundtable, a three-part documentary that traces the evolution of podcasting from pirate radio roots to today’s billion-dollar ecosystem.
• Spotify announced a number of changes and enhancements to advertising on its platform. It’s launched a new programmatic offering called Spotify Ad Exchange; and a new AI ad creator tool dubbed Spotify Gen AI Ads. Their launch notes contain a number of stats about how Spotify is working.

• Magellan AI is not rebranding. Yesterday, Apr 1, they announced a rebrand to Podgellan AI - but it was an April Fool’s joke. “Of course we won't use the word ‘pod’ in our company name,” Magellan AI CEO and co-founder Cameron Hendrix said, adding “Who would do that?” Magellan AI is this month's sponsor of, um, Podnews.

• Linus Media Group (on YouTube as Linus Tech Tips, among others) shares how the content company makes money. Revenue from YouTube is just 11.6% of total revenue; of that, 37.3% comes from a revenue share from YouTube Premium subscribers, which operates similarly to Spotify’s Partner Program.

• After criticism from the UK podcast industry, the BBC has said it won’t press ahead with ads in podcasts in the UK, saying that it has “decided to rule out placing adverts around BBC licence-fee funded programmes on third-party podcast platforms in the UK.” The announcement is expected to be confirmed in the BBC Annual Plan next week. Independent podcasters had called the idea “disastrous”.
  • The BBC will still take some advertising in UK podcasts though; Podnews reported last week on a new BBC podcast which will contain ads inside the UK, but is not produced by the public service. The BBC is funded by advertising outside the UK.
• Exclusive: Frequency Ads has launched a new Premium Publisher Network for host-read ads. Partnering with DAX US, the service aims to make host-read ads as easy to buy as programmatic ads.
• Popular podcast app Pocket Casts is rolling out “smart folders” next week, which automatically groups shows together. You’ll see them in beta versions of the app now.
