- Spotify announced a set of new podcast features.
- "Users can ask Spotify questions about the podcast they’re listening or watching, and get answers in real time." - this feature is available in the US, Sweden and Ireland for Premium users.
- Dynamic Creator Sponsorships are now available for creators in the Spotify Partner Program. The feature allows sponsorships to be dynamically scheduled.
- Memberships (which "will launch for select creators soon") appears to be an equivalent to Supporting Cast, Patreon or Apple Podcasts Premium Subscriptions. Pricing and details weren't given.
- Personal Podcasts are coming next month to Premium users in the US. It's a tool that lets listeners generate and schedule short, private audio episodes tailored to their interests and their listening habits. Examples given are "Help me understand economics in five minutes", or "Share my daily city updates". After a free set of credits per month, listeners will have the option to purchase more.
- Spotify also highlighted how its rebuilt ad platform is driving growth (major changes for podcasting go live in July); announced a paid tool to let you remix songs, including by using AI; and Spotify Studio, a desktop app that unlocks more possibilities using AI.
- Earlier in the week, Spotify announced that podcasts can be marked as "verified", and clarified that AI can't be used to impersonate others using voice clones. The company still has no policy on entirely AI-generated shows.
- Audible has announced an integration with Apple Podcasts. Members can now listen to their favourite shows from Audible on Apple Podcasts, by connecting their account. The integration is also used by companies like The New York Times and Apple Music. One show being promoted in this way is Leon Neyfakh's new show, OnlyFantasy.

- Across the world, the podcast economy grew 23% last year, says new data from Owl & Co. Global podcasting is now worth $9.2bn in revenue, says the data. The biggest increase came from direct ad revenue, but revenue from consumers (membership tools like Patreon and Supporting Cast, etc) also significantly increased, and is now worth $2.2bn alone.
- Vox Media's podcast network, Vox.com and New York magazine, have been sold to James Murdoch for a reported $300mn. The Verge and other Vox websites aren't part of the deal. (James Murdoch is the one that split from his father Rupert Murdoch's media empire some years ago).
- 43% of British adults now listen to an ad-supported podcast monthly, says new data from Sounds Profitable and Sound Insights. 44% of UK podcast listeners recalled ever making a purchase after hearing a podcast ad, according to the findings of The Advertising Landscape UK, which were shared yesterday at The Podcast Show.

- YouTube is winning podcast creator hearts, according to the results of the Podnews Report Card, which were revealed at the opening keynote for The Podcast Show in London, which kicks off today. The results show significantly better scores for YouTube in almost every category, and overall, YouTube rises to the #2 best-scoring platform, behind Apple. Apple, too, has increased its score after launching a slew of new features over the past year. We've the results in full.
- The International Womens Podcast Awards have a new owner, a new location, and new branding - and are open for submissions from today. Entries are just $50 each, including fees. TINK Media, the new owners of the event, are to bring the awards to Toronto ON, Canada.
- In the UK, Global announced a new premium advertising capability on YouTube. The company joins a select group of UK media companies with a direct YouTube sales capability, and is the only UK media owner able to offer advertisers audio, outdoor and premium video all in one place.

- Blubrry Podcasting has announced an exclusive partnership with Podpage - replacing its own landing pages with a website from Podpage, giving creators access to a significantly more powerful and customisable online presence. Here's an example for Podcast Insider.
- Triton Digital released its Q1 2026 US Podcast Ranker, which reveals that comedy is the #1 podcast category, seeing a significant increase in the quarter. Pod Save America is #1 by average weekly downloads.
- Digital audio in the US is already worth Brazil’s entire digital ad market, writes Rodrigo Tigre for Podnews today. In spite of 92% of Brazilians consuming some form of audio every month, audio spend in the country is so small, it doesn't even appear in the latest IAB figures. But, says the co-founder of Ozen.fm, it could take very little to move the needle in audio's favour.

- The world of podcasting is travelling to London for The Podcast Show, which has revealed its full programme of speakers. Delegates from more than 50 countries will attend, and the show has added two new spaces for international visitors. There are more than 450 speakers and 170 sessions.
- The results of the Podnews Report Card will be revealed in the first session at 9.15am on Wednesday. Our Editor, James Cridland, says that the report reveals that apps and platforms that continue investing in new features and good discoverability are prized by podcast creators.
- In the UK, Sky News is to launch Sky News Insider, a £2.99/month subscription for ad-free access, bonus episodes and early releases. It's the first time Sky News has launched an additive, paid-for news product. The company is using our sponsor Supporting Cast to sell podcast subscriptions.
- Flightcast has announced support for video on Apple Podcasts, and HLS video through the alternate enclosure, at no extra cost for all customers. The enterprise video podcast host is not charging for additional bandwidth or hosting to enable this feature, and all existing episodes have been pre-processed for customers on the platform, meaning they can enable Apple Podcasts video with no delay.

- Spotify's Megaphone, and Spotify for Creators, are to support video for podcasts published on Apple Podcasts. The two companies were the only large podcast hosts not to announce support for HLS video when Apple announced it earlier in the year. No pricing has been given. It doesn't change how video works on Spotify, however: the company still requires videos to be uploaded directly for playback on the Spotify app.
- The company also announced live partners for Spotify Video Distribution (which allows your podcast host to directly upload video for you into Spotify). Libsyn, Podigee, Audioboom, Audiomeans, and Podspace are all live with the feature today. Spotify Video Distribution was announced in January; Acast and Omny Studio were both highlighted as launch partners then, but aren't yet live. Spotify is now explicit in the FAQ that if you change your mind, you can transition your show back to an audio-only RSS feed - but the company warns you, you'll lose all video uploads.
- At a big YouTube event called Brandcast, a number of YouTube-exclusive shows were announced, including four new shows from Alex Cooper's Unwell Network. YouTube announced a number of new features for advertisers.
- The NZ Podcast Summit last weekend was the last, the organiser, Lewis Tennant, announced. It was the fifth annual event. It leaves both Australia and New Zealand without a focused podcast conference.

- Exclusive: Amazon Music begins rolling out video podcasts from today. Video podcasts will initially be available for customers in the US on iOS and Android, across all subscription tiers. A spokesperson told us: "In today’s rapidly evolving podcast landscape, video has emerged as an increasingly essential format for creators and their audiences. With more consumers engaging with video podcasts of their favorite shows, Amazon Music is introducing an integrated video podcast experience for customers, making it simpler for customers to watch a selection of their favorite podcasts without leaving the app. This early experience will help us gather valuable customer feedback to shape and enhance the experience."
- Amazon Music is initially launching video podcasts with Amazon's ART19, and has plans to expand to additional partners later this summer. Initial shows with video include Higher Ground's IMO with Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson, and Dear Media's Khloé in Wonder Land, Not Skinny But Not Fat and Let's Be Honest with Kristin Cavallari. ART19 and Amazon Music will work directly with creators and publishers to provide instructions on how to make their videos available on Amazon Music.
- Podnews is told that the app will use HLS video, including support for HLS multivariate playlists via an alternate enclosure in RSS. Videos remain hosted by the creator's podcast hosting company. A company spokesperson told us that the approach "maintains an open RSS ecosystem, meaning podcast creators retain full control over their hosting, ad inventory monetization, and audience targeting." There is no private API to submit video, and Amazon Music is not charging podcast creators or networks for access to video distribution. A number of podcast hosting companies offering video have already said that they aim to support video delivery using the alternate enclosure.
- Acast claims its the first to monetise Apple Podcasts' HLS video, signing campaigns with State Farm and T-Mobile. The company says that 117 shows have already enabled Acast’s Apple HLS integration, with over 1,000 video episodes published to date (on Acast, access to video is currently invite-only). HLS video with Apple Podcasts, like with Amazon Music, remains hosted by podcast hosts like Acast.
- At The Podcast Show in London next week Flightpath will unveil Revenue Optimizer, a tool that is built to ensure that publishers maximise the available revenue from advertising campaigns in their shows. (Brand Stage, Wed, 2pm)
- Muck Rack, a communications platform, will also be speaking at The Podcast Show. The company has joined Sounds Profitable's Partner Network, and will be alongside Sounds Profitable's Head of Communications, Molly DeMellier, on "The New Word of Mouth: Podcasts, Earned Media, and AI Search."

- Oprah Winfrey's The Oprah Podcast today features guests that are out of this world - or, at least, they were. After their extraordinary, history-making trip around the moon, Oprah has an in-depth conversation with the crew of Artemis II. The crew shares how they were transformed after spending more than nine days traveling farther into space than any human being has ever been. The show was acquired by Amazon's Wondery last month.
- Spotify drives 1.5x more podcast consumption than YouTube, according to new data from Podstock. However, part of that is due to discovery tools and reach for new audiences - new listeners lower average time spent per stream. The data, based on thousands of different podcast episodes, highlights the increasingly multiplatform world of podcasting.
- In the UK, podcasting reaches more 18-34 year-olds than broadcast TV, says research from Sounds Profitable, written up by Ben Robins of Sound Insights. The data on the UK's podcast consumers arrives a week before The Podcast Show in London: Ben Robins and Tom Webster will cover more of the data on May 20 at 10am.

This beautifully-designed report suggests that there are 7.7mn video podcast episodes available, but it's very unequal: the top 1% of video podcasts are getting 42% of all consumption. The inequality also extends to who's behind the microphone: there are twice as many video podcasts hosted by men as women. You can also score your podcast against the top ten.

- A community to connect BIPOC creators through education, networking and partnerships, BIPOC Podcast Creators has announced that it is closing. The co-founders announced that the closure is partially driven by capacity and time constraints, but also reflects the structural challenges of sustaining community-driven work in the current content creator landscape. “The industry benefits enormously from communities like ours, but the infrastructure to sustain them long-term requires arduous work and significant financial investment. And frankly, it’s not enough to ask our creators to pay to make up this difference,” said co-founder Maribel Quezada Smith.
- VeePod has launched dynamic 3D branding for any video podcast, particularly useful for product placements and logos, as well as busy podcast publishers. The toolkit will be demonstrated at The Podcast Show later this month.
- Yesterday, we reported on what we called Spotify's "video lock-in". This story was based on screenshots of Podigee's implementation of Spotify's video distribution API, which we erroneously attributed to Spotify's own UX: we're happy to make that distinction clear. What's a little less clear is the extent of the lock-in. Spotify denies that creators are permanently "locked in" to using a Spotify API feed if they opt for video distribution in this way, though the company has confirmed that changing your feed back to RSS requires manual work from both the podcast hosting company and from Spotify itself. From others, we hear that this reversion process may remove comments, reviews, and video files from your podcast; and we also understand that following our story yesterday, Spotify has contacted all partners to clarify messaging about this process. Not that any of us would know - at least two podcast hosting companies have told us that the whole API is under a non-disclosure agreement, and that they are prohibited from speaking about it.
