- At some point 1 in 2 people will be affected by cancer. "Whenever I read that stat, I just always felt sorry for the other guy. Plot twist… you will occasionally be the other guy," says Jamie East, who releases Bad Blood: The Diary of a Cancer today. Jamie, who is Head of Podcasts at DMG Media, was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukaemia in June 2025; the show, which starts today, includes real-life conversations from his doctors appointments, and an audio diary.
- The Escucha Podcast newsletter has published its final issue. Starting in November 2020, the fortnightly Spanish-language publication focused on podcast reviews and criticism. "The crushing emergence of AI and the shift towards video by a large part of the industry have created a significant cocktail of two things that don't interest me in the slightest", writes Pablo Fisher; but he adds "Escucha Podcast was a beautiful project, the loveliest and best thing I've done in my professional life. It led me to meet incredible people, to listen to the best minutes of audio in our language (also the worst; the selection task hasn't been easy)."
- Goalhanger has licensed its fiction podcast Sherlock & Co to BBC Sounds. The show currently gets 800,000 downloads each month, and will perform two sell-out live shows at London's Southbank centre later this year.

- Who really listens to podcasts? Be careful with your assumptions, says numbereight, quoting from a study across five markets. Podcast listeners aren't just young; seniors are not just an edge case; and it's not just boys listening. The piece gives us the right questions to ask when planning podcast campaigns.
- A new remote recording service called SureTake is deliberately simple - and does one thing: high quality local audio and video recording. Aimed at editors and studios, the tool doesn't "nudge clients towards DIY tools or AI editing", it says - wonder who they could possibly mean... the company, which hails from Canada, is looking for beta testers - there's a free trial on the website.
- More and more people are using podcast app Overcast. Buzzsprout's platform stats for June show that podcast consumption by Overcast has increased by +28% year-on-year. Most other apps are relatively static - except Spotify, which shows a slump of -26%. (Some of this could be attributed to Spotify video, which is hosted by Spotify themselves). "Web browsers" are up by 4.4%.
- Transistor's stats, meanwhile - archived here - also show a 22% increase in Overcast year-on-year, and a drop for Spotify of -40%. Apple Podcasts shows a modest increase.

- Riverside 2.0 begins to roll out today, which the company calls the biggest update in its history - with a new fully rebuilt recording studio and AI editor, social scheduling to automatically post to every channel, motion graphics in the video editor, and an upcoming MCP integration to connect AI assistants like Claude or ChatGPT (here's the waitlist). No longer just a remote recording tool, Riverside's Mac app will do in-person multicam recording too; and because you're only truly fashionable if you have your own newsletter, Riverside has added that as well, with an automatic publishing tool. The company says it's the "first agentic platform to span the entire creative workflow", and says that it takes just minutes after a recording session finishes to automatically deliver a rough cut, short-form clips, a newsletter, and a posting calendar. It's a three-week rollout, with a number of features launching today.
- Happy Canada Day. The podcast Gloves Off was only intended to be a limited series last year, but it's back for a new season from today, after being honoured at the Webby Awards and becoming one of the most listened-to podcasts in Canada. This year, it'll also be available in video, as well as an after show, called Cross Check; and focuses on lessons Canada could adopt to form alliances with other middle powers.
- One of the largest buyers of audio and podcast advertising, Ad Results Media (ARM) has been acquired by Miroma Group. No terms were given; we're told it's the biggest expansion into the US market by Miroma, "increasing the group’s annual media investment to more than $750 million".

- Podcasts are becoming multiplatform - audio, video, short-form, social and newsletters - and audiences are switching between them. That's one of the findings of a new piece of research: The Podcast Atlas by Sounds Profitable, which gets covered in a free webinar this Wednesday. The data also covers the benefits of podcast newsletters (not this one) - which "create direct, owned relationships that are independent of platform algorithms. Among newsletter subscribers, 87% said podcast newsletters lead them to listen to episodes".
- We also learn that audio and video listeners demonstrated nearly identical episode completion rates.
- The winners of the Scottish Podcast Awards were announced. The Podcast of the Year went to comedy show The Ford & Shelby Show.
- iHeartMedia announced an expanded relationship with Amazon Ads. iHeartMedia customers can now leverage Amazon DSP; iHeart is also a local reseller of its audio and video inventory.

- In Tokyo, Otonal has launched a podcast and audio ad localization service, to help global brands adapt their English-language content into the Japanese market. Literal translations, the company says, simply don't work well in Japan, with complex levels of politeness, and grammatical structures that mean call-to-actions are at the end of a sentence.
- The Scottish Podcast Awards took place last night. The event was marred by the audience booing the winner of the Best International podcast, The Rest is History. That award, which didn't require a Scottish connection, was accepted by video. Otherwise, we're told it was a positive event; the winners haven't been published, we've asked for a list.
- YouTube has 13.4% of all TV watching in the US, says Nielsen's latest Gauge reports. Netflix is at 7.8%; Tubi is up to 2.3%.

- How much will people pledge for a good podcast? The Apple history podcast Designed in California has now raised over $200,000 in its Kickstarter campaign, with another seven days left. (There are plenty of fiction podcasts or podcast apps that could do with your financial support, just saying. Oh, and this.)
- Crossed Wires, the podcast festival in the UK, has revealed its guests and local lineup for the event. Greg James and Alice Levine are set to headline day one of the festival with the first-ever live show of their new podcast Bad Chat; while Miquita Oliver is announced to join How to Fail with Elizabeth Day. The festival is being held in Sheffield, Jul 2-5.
- One of the organisers, Dino Sophos of Persephonica, spoke to UK MPs on the Culture, Media and Sports Committee about why some of the BBC's podcasts are now available on YouTube. ("Probably a little bit late", he says).
- Australian television personality Karl Stefanovic has removed a recent episode of The Karl Stefanovic Show where he interviewed, and praised, far-right activist and convicted criminal Tommy Robinson. Stefanovic's main employer, Nine Entertainment, says the podcast is nothing to do with them - and that they're taking the matter 'seriously'. One media outlet suggests that Stefanovic may have been fired from his $2mn TV job.

- Is Netflix's podcast strategy paying off? Writing in Puck ($), and reported in Awful Announcing, Matthew Belloni suggests that "multiple (Netflix) company sources have told me that podcast engagement numbers on the whole are low." Belloni adds that "no video podcast has charted on Nielsen's weekly top 10".
- Opinion: These two statements aren't quite enough to suggest that Netflix has failed in adding podcasts. Edison Research reported earlier in the month that 14% of weekly podcast consumers have used Netflix to consume podcasts, and Samba TV has suggested 13% of Netflix households had consumed podcasts on the platform. As of the engagement figures: Samba TV's data showed that 40% of all podcast views on the platform went to The Breakfast Club; which was 3x bigger than the #2 show, a Netflix companion podcast for Bridgerton. If Bridgerton only had 13% of podcast views, you can imagine that there is quite a long tail in popularity - and, if you're just judging daily podcasts by views per episode, well, those engagement numbers might well be "low".
- A councillor in St John's NL, Canada, has been suspended after quoting from comments given by a guest of Steven Bartlett's Diary of a CEO, and presenting those claims as medical fact. The claims were made by Erica Komisar, an author and licensed clinical social worker. She isn't a psychologist; and a registered psychologist interviewed by CBC News suggested that the claims made by Komisar were inaccurate.
- Ireland’s RTÉ writes a piece on the rise of Steven Bartlett’s controversial show.
- Semafor reports that The Atlantic is doubling the size of its video team. Podcasts at the magazine have grown by 50% in downloads over the last year, and more than doubled revenue.

- YouTube is the most popular way to discover new podcasts, according to new research from Sounds Profitable and JAR Podcast Solutions. 61% discover shows via either YouTube or social media. However, different platforms vary with different ages. The data is a free download.
- Entertainment shows typically don't perform very well for advertisers - but, there are some breakout entertainment podcasts with great ad performance, says Oxford Road, in a new ORBIT report. The best performing is The Popcast with Know and Jamie; but Jon Stewart's The Weekly may be the one you've heard about (and it's at #3).
- Triton Digital's US Podcast Ranker for May 2026 was released. iHeart's Stuff You Should Know became #1 in weekly average downloads. The top sales network was iHeart Audience Network.
