    Spotify redefines a “play”

Sponsored by SpotsNow. SpotsNow is the AI operating system for podcast advertising. Join the webinar to learn how podcast networks can use AI to maximize their sales output using Claude, agents and ChatGPT. Book the free webinar now

    • Spotify has adopted the Alliance for Podcast Measurement definition of a "play" in their metrics, announced yesterday as part of a wider set of new data and charts within the Creators dashboard. Spotify first introduced a "play" in May 2025, but didn't explain how they were calculated; as of today, a "play" is now defined as 30 seconds of content played once per user per session (audio or video). Spotify claim their data "helped inform" AMP's definition; the technical details of that have yet to be published.
      • The IAB, which is not involved in AMP, has no definition of a play in its Podcast Measurement Guidelines, under which many podcast hosting companies certify their data. Its technical document defines a valid download as something where "enough of the podcast content to play for 1 minute should have been downloaded", one per user per 24 hours; that's twice as long as AMP's 30 second figure. (A play is not a download; a download may never be played.)
      • Apple Podcasts, which is not involved in AMP, defines a play in Apple Podcasts Connect as "the number of plays on unique devices where the play duration is greater than 0 seconds" - and isn't limited to one per user. In practice, a "play" appears to measure every touch of the play button (even, one suspects, after pauses for turn-by-turn instructions while driving). As one example, in May, the Podnews Weekly Review podcast saw 2,093 downloads to Apple Podcasts, but 3,200 "plays".
      • However YouTube, which is not involved in AMP, highlights "views" across its website, but does not publicly define what a view is. It's generally believed, however, that a "view" means a minimum of 30 seconds played (for videos longer than that). In our view, if both YouTube and Spotify both now agree on a "30 seconds" metric - then, because that's where the majority of podcasts are consumed, that's a de-facto standard anyway. But, for the benefit of the industry, will everyone else agree?
      • When US radio switched from a 5 minute to 3 minute threshold last year, that added another 23% to the numbers. We're doing some data work to discover what it might mean for podcasting, too.
    • Stampede Social has unveiled a set of new tools for podcasters who use Instagram. You can set the tool to instantly send your latest episode - complete with episode artwork - to anyone who DMs a keyword to you: making it much easier to convert an Insta reader to a podcast listener. The tool can also be used for advertiser feedback, and works with your existing RSS feed.
    • Back in May last year, Spotify came under fire for listing spam podcasts that operated as links to websites for illegal drugs. After a CNN story, Spotify said they'd removed them; but that kicked off an investigation from US Senator Maggie Hassan, which was released yesterday. The full investigation suggests that Spotify removed 3,500 accounts in 2025 (and over 57,000 different episodes), but didn't report a single account to law enforcement. Spotify doesn't track any use of links in episode descriptions, either, we learn - and some shows had been on the platform for four years.
      • iHeartRadio, Amazon Music and Acast's Podchaser also had this kind of spam in their directory, says the committee's report. Jellypod, an AI-generated podcast tool, is highlighted as one of the tools used to publish this content. We've covered efforts to remove spam shows like this in the past (like this, back in 2022, and the Podcast Index's work more recently). In our opinion, this isn't a Spotify problem - it's an industry-wide issue, that we should be working together to combat. It shouldn't be hard to automatically share potentially problematic feeds across the industry: and to highlight podcast hosting companies who fail to adequately moderate their users' content.

    The risk takers in podcasting

    • Ahead of the Jun 26 closing date for this year's award entries, The Signal Awards has published a new report, Recognizing The Risk Takers: Eleven Podcasters Making Bold Bets; the report features creators from WaitWhat to Psychopedia to Lower Street, each of whom made a bet on experimentation and are sharing what they've learned. "The willingness to experiment, it turns out, is its own form of excellence," the report finds.
    • In the UK, Global has launched AdPower - the first self-service ad platform to let you book both mainstream audio and outdoor media. The tool gives access to live and on-demand radio, but not, yet, to Global's podcasts - they'll be added later, we're told.
    • In the next version of iOS, Apple Podcasts video will add transcription features that, until now, have been only available in audio podcasts. An Apple spokesperson tells us that from iOS 27 - "Video playback will, for the first time, support read along with transcripts with the ability to search and seek to a specific part of the episode by clicking the transcript text. Chapters are also available for ease of navigation."

Apple Podcasts video to be on tvOS and macOS

Sponsored by SpotsNow. SpotsNow is the AI operating system for podcast advertising. Join the webinar to learn how podcast networks can use AI to maximize their sales output using Claude, agents and ChatGPT. Book the free webinar now

    • Apple released more information on upcoming features, as part of the company's WWDC event. In the announcement, we learn that from "fall" this year - Mac users will get access to video podcasts in the Podcasts app; Apple Podcasts on tvOS also will support video playback and will have a full redesign; and there is a new "search within a show" feature to find an episode.
      • Apple Podcasts video allows creators to include an optional 4K version of their show, which, while overkill on a phone, will look good on the big screen.
      • Typically, these new features roll-out in mid-September, with public betas in July. Development betas are available now, though are confidential (so, we can't report on them).
    • A Canadian podcast network has agreed to pay CAD $885,000 (US $634,000) in a negotiated settlement after an unfounded allegation in a podcast. The founder of Canadaland, Jesse Brown must make an apology on the website and the podcast. The show appeared to repeat a false claim from a 1996 magazine article as a statement of fact; and Canadaland did not seek comment before publishing. In 2024, a judge suggested Brown showed a "callous disregard of reputation and personal damage". CTV News reports that it is one of the larger sums paid in recent years. Podnews has learnt that Canadaland was fully insured for the settlement amount.
      • Jesse Brown told Podnews: "The WE Charity Scandal was never about anything Theresa Kielburger did. It was about what Craig and Marc did, and what Justin Trudeau did. That’s why Marc and Craig apologized to their donors and why Justin Trudeau apologized to all Canadians. Theresa Kielburger had nothing to apologize for, and that’s why I apologized to her today."
      • We asked podcast lawyer Gordon Firemark what we should learn from this case. He told us: "Cases like this illustrate the importance of independent fact checking and verification.  Good practice is to ensure that every potentially damaging  allegation can be corroborated from two, three  or more credible sources.  Relying on a single source exposes you to just this scenario, and potentially significant damages awards."
    • Those who host their podcasts on Substack will be able to distribute video to Apple Podcasts "in a few weeks", according to a webinar with Substack Product Manager Zach Taylor (spotted by webinar-watcher Chris Stone). The platform also delivers video automatically to YouTube; it doesn't support Spotify video.

    • Dish from Waitrose is the world's most successful branded podcast, according to a release today. The show is sponsored by Waitrose, a UK supermarket.
    • Apple's WWDC made a number of announcements. Relevant updates, coming soon, include a redesigned Podcasts app on tvOS (which will likely bring podcast video to the Apple TV device), and a customizable EQ feature for AirPods. We expect more detailed announcements as the conference continues.

    • Podcast producer Goalhanger has become the fastest-growing company in the UK, according to The Sunday Times 100 ranking. Employing eighty people, the company made £37.9 million (US $50.8 million) in sales in 2025, a 321% average annual growth in the last three years. The company makes the popular "The Rest Is..." series.
      • Confirmation that The Rest Is Football will be available globally on Netflix for the World Cup. Most podcasts on Netflix are just US-only.
    • The Alliance for Measurement in Podcasting (AMP) has announced its "cross-platform alternative to the podcast download". The group has defined a "play" for podcasts, as part of four exposure definitions. We're promised more information in mid July. The definition differs from the widely-supported IAB Podcast Measurement Guidelines, and from definitions from Apple Podcasts and YouTube, who are not part of the group.
    • PAVE Studios is to work with A+E to turn six of its unscripted TV shows into podcasts. Shows include history shows History’s Greatest Mysteries, and Modern Marvels; and crime show The First 48. They will roll out later this year.

    Is podcasting “cooked”?

    • Podcasting is cooked. So said Transistor's Justin Jackson, and the Podcast Marketing Academy's Jeremy Enns, in a talk at The Podcast Show in London (which they filmed themselves). Video is taking over podcasting, AI slop will drown out the good stuff, and audio-only podcasts are a thing of the past. They take a look at the data and provide simple tactics for thriving in podcasting - which, yes, is still absolutely possible, they say.
    • Continuity announcements have been part of broadcast media for ages - "in half an hour, The Waltons. Now, though - here's Lucille Ball." Audio Always thinks they have a place in podcasting, with continuity announcements to introduce new shows to listeners. The company has written up how well they've worked.
    • The Podcast Haven has produced an analysis tool to help you find topics to grow your show. The AI service, which requires registration, sends a seven-point plan, including SEO and guest ideas. Here's ours - suggesting we should cover government regulation, accessibility and inclusivity.

Webinar to uncover what works in a podcast trailer

Sponsored by SpotsNow. SpotsNow is the AI operating system for podcast advertising. RFPs, vetting, outreach: handled with custom agents. Your sellers close 30% more. Book a free demo at Spotsnow.io

    • What works and what doesn't in podcast trailers? Coleman Insights has a free webinar this Wednesday to unveil its research - how can you make promos and trailers that work better for your show.
      • Want to hear some trailers for shows in the meantime? Our New Podcasts feed lets you listen to some of the best. Get the podcast here - or add your show.
    • SpotsNow has launched what it calls an AI operating system for podcast advertising. The tool automates planning and pricing, and is custom-built for each individual podcast network, to connect to the way the team already works. "The agents we custom build take the repetitive load off the floor so sellers can do the part only people can do, which is build the relationship and close the deal," says CEO Cam Pritchard.
    • A new AI promotion tool called Kompozy has launched. Promising to "turn one idea into a month of content", the tool ingests a podcast, RSS feed or blog post, then composes a set of social posts and schedules them into different platforms (if you let it) over an entire week. We gave it Friday's newsletter; it gave us a set of decent-looking posts, including quote cards, LinkedIn-like posts, an infographic, and quotes with our Editor on a laptop, our Editor making some kind of presentation, and another photo post - it also does video clips as well. You can give Kompozy a free trial.

    Podcast advertising measurement “is broken”

Sponsored by Supporting Cast. The shows you listen to probably already use us. 🎙️ Supporting Cast powers subscriptions for some of the most trusted names in podcasting—because when your business depends on subscriber trust, the platform behind it matters. Let's talk about what we could build together.

    • "Advertisers run multiple attribution systems because media players won't align on how to measure ad response. We can't even agree on a shared definition of a podcast." So says the Alliance for Measurement in Podcasting (AMP) - launched to create "the first podcasting measurement framework". Brought together by Oxford Road, the group, including voting members from Spotify, United Talent Agency, SiriusXM, DraftKings, Libsyn and others, have been working in secret since last summer, driven by what it calls industrywide confusion: both a lack of standardized metrics and disagreement about where podcasts end and social videos (as well as other forms of video) begin. The group suggests that "a billion dollars of demand is sitting on the sidelines"; it plans to introduce a new unified framework for use across audio and video at Oxford Road’s upcoming CAO Summit on July 22nd-23rd at the Terranea Resort in Rancho Palos Verdes CA, USA.
      • Our take: A definition of "podcast" is vital - because, without it, it's impossible to track the growth of this medium, and the budget going toward it. The formation of this group, which appears to be representative of the podcast business overall - is a welcome step. It's notable, however, that this group does not include the IAB, which runs existing podcast measurement guidelines, nor the trade association Sounds Profitable.
    • The Australian Audio Awards took place last night - here's a full list of the winners. The awards, which recognised both radio and podcasting, chose Mamamia Out Loud as the People's Choice Award, and included separate awards for "independent" and "major" podcasts.
    • Public radio station WBUR stands accused of "butchering episodes, newsletters and emails" to "hide the fact" that the hosts and producers of WBUR's Circle Round, Rebecca Sheir and Eric Shimelonis, have left the show. In a press release announcing a fundraiser for a new project, the hosts say that they "managed to work a brief goodbye into our final episode, [but] we’d been hoping to do more." In a statement, a WBUR spokesperson told us: “We're grateful to Sheir and Shim for every story told, every child reached and every bit of magic we created together. WBUR will continue to offer Circle Round stories in the months and years ahead. We wish Sheir and Shim the very best in their next chapter.”
