The Stormwrought Shores 11: The Jewel of Ouvira, part 4

From A Glossary of the People, Places, and Events of Alkyon

City Watch— Most settlements on the continent have found some way to defend themselves from outside threats, and those of significant size often employ a militia commonly called a City Watch or Guard. Watch members are usually trained and outfitted by the city and funded via taxation. Depending on local politics, the Watch may function as public peacekeepers or more as a private mercenary force for the wealthy and influential. While their authority is more or less complete, a Watch's jurisdiction rarely extends beyond city walls or nearby outlying farms.

Arcana— The collective term for magical and magically enhanced artifacts, equipment, and substances. Arcana range from the simple, such as a basic potion (see "Alchemy"), to the legendary, such as a powerful and storied armament (see "The Wall of Denoria"). Throughout the history of the Stormwrought Shores, arcana of all varieties have been crafted, discovered, lost, found, destroyed, and transformed—and their use and misuse have been both boon and bane to hero, cause, and empire.

The Canorain Dawn—A loose assemblage of Canorain insurgents, primarily based in the city of Kebla. The Canorain Dawn carries out guerilla protests and attacks against the Denorian government and those Denorian citizens who came to Canorai in the wake of the territory's 5783 annexation (see "The Annexation of Canorai"). Their symbol, a simple insignia of a rising sun in red paint, is often found in back alleys and on abandoned buildings in the seedier parts of Kebla. Their size is unknown, but Denorian authorities maintain it is a disorganized group of upstarts that will soon be no more than an unpleasant memory.

From A Glossary of the People, Places, and Events of Alkyon

The Jewel of Ouvira— A large gem, a star sapphire, originally unearthed in the Northern Bulwark mountains near Daros-Ereth in 5601. The exact manner of its discovery is disputed; the family of an Erethi miner claims that their relative found it while contracting for a Denorian company, while Denorian authorities maintain that the jewel was located and excavated by their own countrymen after a mine collapse. The stone was cut en cabochon in Denoria's Reach, revealing its striking six-pointed star pattern that is visible even without external light. This feature and the gem's impressive size have made it a beloved cultural artifact of the Kingdom of Denoria. The stone is named in deference to Ouvira, the avani goddess of stars and long journeys.

The Stormwrought Shores 07: In the Shadow of the Necropolis, part 4

From A Glossary of the People, Places, and Events of Alkyon

Necromancy— Widely considered taboo across the nations of Alkyon, necromancy is understood by most to refer specifically to the reanimation of the dead, and is thought of as a perversion of the natural order of life and death. However, ancient scholars contend that necromantic magic is merely the animation or vitalization of any organic matter through magical means—that is to say, that from a magical standpoint there is no meaningful difference between reanimating a dead body or, for instance, granting life or sentience to plant matter. Due to Denorian restrictions on the practice and study of necromantic magic, little research has been done to investigate this ancient theory.

The Election of Lennox Reeve— In the year 5290, Canorain immigrant Lennox Reeve unseated the incumbent, Bertram Vek, in the democratic election for Alderman of Renwick. Prior to the election, Vek had served as Alderman for twelve years, winning the seat six times—three of which he ran unopposed. Despite beginning his campaign as an underdog, Reeve, who came to Renwick shortly after the Annexation of Canorai, quickly gained popularity, though some suspect that the strategies which led to his victory were not entirely above board.

The Mourner— A god of death, grief, beginnings and endings, traditionally revered by the elves of the northern island. Whether the elven celebration of death as a gift and an honor, rather than as a loss, comes from the influence of The Mourner's adherents, or The Mourner gained the prominence she did because of that belief is, historically, unclear. In elven funerary rites, the elves appointed to stand vigil for the deceased are believed not just to be representatives of The Mourner herself, but true avatars of her for the period of the ritual.

The Annexation of Canorai— After a significant military campaign beginning in the year 5741, the independent southern territory of Canorai was annexed by the Kingdom of Denoria in 5783 and officially became a duchy under Denorian rule. During and after this prolonged conflict, numerous groups of Canorain people were displaced north into existing Denorian territory.

Alchemy—The study of potions and their effects. Alchemists use ingredients common and uncommon, botanical and mineral and biological, arcane and mundane. With specialized tools and techniques, a skilled practitioner can create potions with nearly any effect. Like any discipline of magic, however, alchemy is inherently unpredictable, and a potion is more than the sum of its parts—its ultimate effect might be entirely unexpected, by the alchemist or the potion's user.

The Harrowers— A coalition of monster hunters, with guild halls spread across the continent. Their stated mission is to preserve the peace of civil society and clear the way for settlers and farmers. Each guild hall has its own leadership and rules; some deal only with fellow Harrowers, while others post bounties publicly and act as a liaison between client and hunter. Whether for members or freelancers, Harrower contracts are usually not very lucrative—the guild prides itself on accepting contracts on behalf of the less fortunate who might not otherwise have recourse, and its mission is a moral one rather than a financial one.

Rag and Bone— A loosely organized guild of bounty-men, assassins, hunters, mercenaries, and hounds with posts across the continent. Though plenty of credible people offer work through Rag and Bone, the organization is known first and foremost as a liaison organization between anyone who needs a job done without their name attached, and anyone willing to do the dirty work for a share of the gold. The guild has a headquarters in most major settlements, where those who have been granted membership can always find work.
