Operation Shattered Shield: The NOPD’s Most Corrupt Era

In the early 1990s, New Orleans was known as the "Murder Capital of America," but the most dangerous criminals weren't just on the streets—some were wearing badges. Today on This Feels Criminal, Tyrella and Nikita break down Operation Shattered Shield, the massive FBI sting that exposed deep-seated corruption within the NOPD.

We follow the story of the Hardy Brothers, a violent drug syndicate protected by the very officers sworn to stop them. At the center of it all is Officer Len Davis, a man so feared he was nicknamed "The Desire Projects Terrorist." When 32-year-old mother Kim Groves filed a brutality complaint against him, she had no idea she was signing her own death warrant.

    In this episode, we discuss:

    • The Hardy Boys: How Wayne and Paul Hardy built a drug empire with help from inside the police department.

    • The FBI Sting: How an undercover agent posing as a Miami dealer caught NOPD officers guarding shipments of cocaine.

    • The Betrayal of Kim Groves: The heartbreaking story of a mother who stood up for her community and the chilling moment her murder was caught on an FBI wire.

    • The Aftermath: The fallout of the 2012 DOJ consent decree and the quest for reform in New Orleans.

The Au Pair Affair Part 2: Brendan Banfield Takes the Stand | The Verdict & Sentencing

"It’s easier to fall in love with someone that saved you."

Those were the words of Brendan Banfield as he attempted to explain away an affair, a dead wife, and a dead stranger to a jury of twelve. In Part 2 of our deep dive into the VA v. Brendan Banfield trial, we move past the "catfish" plot and into the courtroom moments that sealed the defendant's fate.

    In this episode, we discuss:

    • Brendan’s Performance: Was he a grieving husband or a cold-blooded manipulator? We analyze his claims that Christine could speak after seven stab wounds to the neck.

    • The Forensic "Gotcha": Why the defense’s own digital investigator became the prosecution’s best witness during cross-examination.

    • The Fatal Flaw: The specific pattern of FetLife logins that proved "Anastasia 9" only existed when Brendan or Juliana were home.

    • The Rebuttal: How a brief testimony from Brendan’s supervisor, T. Smith Patrick, turned a "work meeting" alibi into a documented lie.

    • Closure: The sentencing of Juliana Magalhães and what this case says about the "Double Murder" plot that nearly worked.

Au Pair Affair Trial (Brendan Banfield) - Part 1: The Plan and The Prosecution

n the first installment of this explosive trial coverage, we dive into the Commonwealth’s case against federal agent Brendan Banfield. What initially appeared to be a tragic home invasion and the heroic defense of his wife, Christine, quickly unraveled into a twisted plot involving an affair with the family’s 22-year-old au pair, Juliana Magalhaes.

We break down the prosecution’s opening statements, which allege Brendan masterminded a "fake rape fantasy" on FetLife to lure an unsuspecting man to his home—setting the stage for a double murder he hoped to blame on an intruder. Hear the chilling details of the initial 911 calls and the star witness testimony of Juliana Magalhaes, who describes the moments Brendan allegedly turned a knife on his own wife.

The New Elizabeth Smart Documentary: What Netflix Left Out

Netflix documentary Kidnapped: Elizabeth Smart gave us a definitive look at one of America’s most harrowing cases—this time, told entirely in Elizabeth’s own voice. But even a feature-length doc can’t cover everything.

In this episode of This Feels Criminal, we’re breaking down the documentary and layering in the raw, deeply personal details Elizabeth shared during her recent milestone interview on Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard.

    In this episode, we discuss:

    • The "Parenting" Perspective: How Elizabeth navigates teaching her own children about safety and body autonomy without passing on her trauma.

    • Outsmarting the Captors: The specific psychological tactics Elizabeth used to manipulate her captors toward her own rescue—details that go deeper than the documentary’s timeline.

    • The Faith Factor: A look at her evolved relationship with her upbringing and how she processed the "twisted prophecy" used against her.

    • Healing vs. Heroism: Why Elizabeth rejects the "victim" label and how she really feels about being the face of child safety advocacy today.

Whether you’ve watched the doc or are hearing these updates for the first time, join us as we explore the resilience of a woman who didn't just survive—she outplayed her circumstances.

The TikTok Teen Who "Performed" Her Grief? (Sarah Grace Patrick) | Part 1

On February 20, 2025 16-year old Sarah Grace Patrick called 911 to report her mother Kristen Brock and stepfather James Brock had been shot to death. They had been found by her half sister who was 5 years old at the time. Understandably, the small community of Carrollton was shocked and terrified that someone could murder two people in their beds as they slept. Thankfully, Sarah Grace and her young sister were safe and unharmed. As time went on, Sarah Grace did what many teenagers do to express themselves- she got on TikTok. She would post videos and slideshows grieving her loss as well as asking for help in solving the murder that seemed to have no leads. Then, in July of 2025 she was arrested and charged as an adult with double homicide. The police believed that she had murdered her parents and left their bodies for her young sister to find and then proceeded to pretend she was grieving publicly for attention. Today, we are going to dive into this case and discuss the road so far- Sarah’s upbringing and family life, the investigation into the murders and what evidence the state may have in their case against Sarah Grace Patrick.
