    Courtney Bentley is the host of the Fit and Fabulous podcast. She holds certifications as a Personal Trainer and Behavioral Change specialist. She teaches people how to live a lifestyle of wellness.

    She spends much of her time coaching other female entrepreneurs. But her advice is universal. In this episode, Courtney will share her tips for adopting a healthy lifestyle… some of it may sound a bit woo-woo to the skeptics out there, but much of it is practical.     Ah, the world of business coaching. There’s no shortage of “coaches” ready to help take your business to the next level. I put coaches in quotes because with all the noise online these days, it’s not always easy to decipher the legit coaches (with real-world business transformation experience) from the fly-by-night social media coaches who are self-qualified by the last business book they read.

    The right coach can catapult your business. The wrong coach equals money and time wasted. In this episode of Small Biz Power, our guest is Tim Furlong, a nationally recognized speaker, facilitator & executive coach. Tim tackles business coaching qualifications, including the right questions to ask to determine if your coach is a good fit for you and more importantly if he or she is qualified to help you grow.

    Tim wrote the book, “Quarter Turns,” and created the “Quarter Turns” coaching program which enables leaders to identify small shifts in approach and behavior that yield highly impactful, sustainable results.

    Tim is also a partner in The Simmons Group here in Las Vegas.

    Las Vegas has a lot of secrets… but some of those secrets need to be told. Our community is home to many nonprofits who work tirelessly to help those who need it most. You may not know, though, that we are also the home base for a national nonprofit that’s helping children all over the country take flight.

    In this episode of Small Biz Power, our guest is the CEO of Miracle Flights, Mark Brown. Mark talks about the work Miracle Flights does to help sick children fly to other cities to get specialized care or second opinions.

    We talk about what inspired the founder to start the organization 32 years ago, how the organization has evolved (you may remember it as Angel Flights or Angel Planes) and what Mark and his team are doing to increase the number of flights they provide every month.

    Mark has a business background. We talk about how that plays into how he runs the organization, and why he calls this the “best job in the world.”

    E020 Building a Modern Company in a Traditional Industry

    “The average age of a mortgage professional is 56,” says Coby Baker, CEO of Alderus Mortgage. And yet the modern workforce is behind that by about 25 years. That’s why Coby, who is also the President of the Nevada Mortgage Lenders Association, is working so hard to develop the millennial breed of mortgage pros.

    In this episode, we talk about what he’s doing to build a millennial-friendly culture in a traditional industry, how he’s building a bridge between the older workers in the industry and this new crop of youngsters, why he’s committed to helping people reach their fullest potential and his lofty goals for his company.

    Coby moved from Salt Lake City to Las Vegas in 2003 and founded Alderus Mortgage. Since then, Alderus has been named one of the top companies in Nevada and one of the top 100 mortgage employers in America.

    Coby speaks and teaches at industry events. He’s also an active member of his local community and regularly volunteers at the Las Vegas Humane Society.

    What is the role of a chamber of commerce in the business community?  It involves more than you might think.  In this episode of Small Biz Power, our guest is Lisa Chao, the Vice President of Membership for the Henderson Chamber of Commerce. 

    Lisa’s career spans 20-years in the realm of business development. She’s a Las Vegas native and known as a go-to “business connector” throughout Southern Nevada.

    Currently, in her role at the Henderson Chamber, Lisa directs the organization’s long-term member development goals, including sales strategies and effective programming. When she’s not working, Lisa enjoys spending time with her family attending sporting events, including those from her alma mater, UNLV. 

    Lisa and I cover a lot of ground in this episode, including what the chamber is doing in the wake of the tragic mass shooting on the Las Vegas Strip.

    E018 Connecting Las Vegas Through Social Media

    On this episode of Small Biz Power, we’re talking to the amazing social media team at the city of Las Vegas.  This small, but mighty team manages the city’s communication strategy on all of its social platforms – from Facebook to Twitter to Instagram to Snapchat to YouTube.  Can you imagine what their editorial calendar looks like? 

    The team is made up of:

    • Jennifer Davies
    • Natasha Shahani
    • Shane Savanapridi

    Jennifer originally wanted to be a lawyer. Then a publicist. Then she got a Twitter account and the rest is history. She is the very first person the city ever hired to focus solely on social media. 

    Natasha risked it all and moved from Los Angeles to help launch the Life is Beautiful festival. She handled all of the marketing and media requests during the first festival.

    Shane has an incredibly diverse background in photography, web design, videography, you name it. At the city, they jokingly say that he is the only one who could single-handedly run the entire department (including a TV station!) 

    These three create and post all the content on the city’s social media channels, but their social media strategy goes beyond just broadcasting.  They use these online platforms as a tool for engaging with the community, soliciting feedback, and monitoring chatter around key issues and events. 

    Small business owners can learn a lot from their integrated approach to social media.

    • How does social media fit with the city’s overall communication strategy?
    • Why is it so important for the city to be engaged on social media? 
    • How do you keep up with the never-ending comments/conversations?
    • How difficult has it been to get buy-in from council members on the importance of social media and the importance for them personally to be involved and engaged?
    • What role does social media play in decision making?
    • How are you using video on social media and why is it so crucial?
