    99. What is Game Readiness

Patty Gasso said it in an interview and it stuck with me: your hitters can be good and the grind will still expose them if they don't show up ready to play. It sounds like a small question when a coach asks it. It isn't.

I spent four and a half years as a volunteer assistant at New Jersey City University in the NJAC — the SEC of Division III. The hardest part of the job was never the swings. It was making sure twenty players could walk onto the field on game day and leave the professor, the paper, and everything else in the parking lot.

In this solo episode I make a different argument: readiness isn't your coach's job. It's yours.

I break game readiness into four categories — mental, emotional, physical, and strategic — and get specific about what each one looks like in practice. Pregame mental checklists. Who you warm up with. Cutting the phone off before you pull up. Box breathing and visualization. Focus anchors. Counting the cards on opposing pitchers during warmups. Shrinking your strike zone to quadrants so you stop chasing. And the 1-2-3 consistency formula I used with college staffs to find out how many players on a roster can honestly be counted on.

If you're headed to the next level, pay attention to the last third. What keeps freshmen and sophomores on the bench usually isn't physical ability.

    It's 80% mental. Probably more.

    97. A Messy Postseason, The Velocity Lie & Too Many Homers: Leaving vs. Loyalty in Softball feat. Rick Pauly

Rob Crews and master pitching coach Rick Pauly pull no punches on the current state of college softball. From backdoor transfer portal deals and the culture of "leavers" to a full breakdown of the 2026 Women's College World Series — nothing is off limits. They examine why loyalty is disappearing from the sport, why colleges aren't developing players (and never really claimed to), and why too many home runs this postseason is a pitching problem, not a hitting achievement. Rob introduces the concept of "visual cache" and vertical bat angle as the keys to hitting the low rise ball, and Rick sounds off on the velocity obsession that's broken softball pitching from the private sector up. Plus: the all-time pitchers debate, the home run record chase, and a tease of Rick's developing nervous system/pulsing concept. No fluff. No spin. Just real talk.

    96. Spin Never Lies: How Rapsodo Develops Hitters & Pitchers

Spin Never Lies: How Rapsodo Develops Hitters & Pitchers | Brian Page, Director of MLB & Special Accounts, Rapsodo

Exit velocity only tells you the ball was hit hard. Spin tells you why — and what your barrel and body actually did to create it.

Brian Page of Rapsodo joins Rob Crews for a deep dive into ball flight data and what it really takes to develop hitters and pitchers. They break down why spin rate is Rapsodo's bread and butter, how optical measurement of the ball's lace pattern delivers best-in-class spin data, gyro (bullet) spin and why softball is full of it, and the live-on-live overlay that's changing how athletes train.

They also get into the philosophy that makes the tech matter: development over report cards, starting every athlete with a baseline before chasing numbers, making technology a community project, and how ball flight data is getting athletes seen and recruited at every level — D2, D3, JUCO and beyond.

💬 "Intent, body, barrel, ball — reverse engineer the whole process and you're on to something."

In This Episode: • What Rapsodo is and the journey from golf to diamond sports • Why spin rate is the most underrated metric on the hitting side • Gyro / bullet spin explained — and why it shows up everywhere in softball • Development vs. report cards — making data a community project • Building a baseline before chasing numbers • The live-on-live overlay and in-game data as the next frontier • How ball flight data gets athletes recruited at every level • Why softball deserves technology built specifically for softball

    94. Real Talk with Iver McDonald

Episode 94: Real Talk with Iver McDonald

Iver McDonald—former Oklahoma Sooner, founder of McDonald Fastpitch Camps, and co-founder of Transfer U—joins Rob Crews for a conversation that covers everything from playing for Patty Gasso to the current state of college softball.

Iver shares what it was like growing up in South Houston's softball scene, learning more in one year at Oklahoma than in 13 years of travel ball, and why the transfer portal is creating as many problems as it solves.

    They go deep on:

→ The gap between high school standouts and college-ready players→ Why players need to know what kind of coach they can play for→ How teams are bringing in portal players who were the problem at their last school→ World Series predictions for 2026 (Tennessee, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, and more)→ Why travel ball culture has become college softball's culture→ The IQ vs. athleticism debate—and why Rob will always choose IQ→ How regional styles of play expose gaps in player development→ Florida State's zero-transfer culture and what it says about recruiting→ Representation, trailblazing, and Iver's message to Black and Brown athletes

This is a real conversation between two people who have been in the trenches of player development for decades. No hot takes—just honest observations about what's working, what's broken, and what needs to change.
