Julie Eaton & Austin Rich of the Salem Weekly discuss the music scene as it develops.
We hide in the shadows and feed on our tears…they make us strong. You can’t reject the rejected. Whoa. Sorry, there. Got a little dark.
Not only do Peter and Julie do this podcast together, they also put on a yearly event in Salem, Oregon called Rejected Art Faire. Last year was the first one, actually. But, it was such a smashing success, they’re going to do it every year. In this episode, they sit down with three artists that will be showing at Rejected Art Faire 2018 – Emma Douglas, Crystal Burgoyne, and Shauna Groves at The Dehn Bar in downtown Salem to talk about the event and their art.
https://roughshodradio.files.wordpress.com/2018/07/rr-raf-20182.mp3 Emma, Crystal, and ShaunaRejected Art Faire 2018 will be Saturday, July 28th at 5pm at The Space Concert Club. It is all ages until 10pm and is $5 entry. All entry fees go to the musicians. Art will be to enjoy and to buy.
The music lineup features Lung from Cincinnati, Ohio. You will hear their song, “Bottom of the Barrel” at the end of the ‘cast. See you at The Faire.
Thanks again to Dehn Bar for graciously allowing us to record in their front room. We love them.

Hey Everybody! Yeah yeah. We’ve been far away, and we’re mighty sorry about that. Listen to us stumble through remembering how to talk about interesting things! Listen to Julie smack her lips and say “um” too much! It’s just like starting over! We did a little catching up. We talked about Make Music Salem 2018 that happened last week and the upcoming Rejected Art Faire 2018 on July 28th at The Space Concert Club. It’s just like hanging out with two really tired people!
BUT!
We put the shout out on Effbook for someone to call in and save us from ourselves, and someone did! Kevin Lapsley from Salem band DPRST called in and chatted with us for a bit. We sure appreciated that. Thanks, Kevin! We finished up playing DPRST’s song, “Ghosts,” recorded live at The Space on June 6th of this year.
DPRSTPlease enjoy listening to us awkwardly remember how to do a podcast. Cheers!

Julie and Peter sit down with Salem band, No Me Gusta at the Dehn Bar downtown and eat free chips and salsa. You know, the usual. They just released their first EP “Grocery Store Erotica.” It’s a punchy little punk number, take a listen. Also, listen to our engrossing conversation.
https://roughshodradio.files.wordpress.com/2018/02/no-me-gusta-poddy-final.mp3No Me Gusta is: Hayden Freshour on guitar and vocals, Tyler Weld on bass, and Justin Baker on drums. These guys are all Salem natives, which is fabulous. Their next show is this weekend, Saturday, February 3rd at The Triangle with Wire Monkey Mama and Lojia. Starts around 9pm and it is FREE! We’ve seen them several times and they bring it.
Other mentions in the podcast:
The Space, Spiller, Showtigers, Kylie Burbank, Wild Ire, Sadgasm, Summer Eyes, Brides, Mouth, City of Pieces, Duncan Trussell, Paul Stamets, and probably more.
NOTE: These are the bands’ Facebook pages, but go on their “about” section and go to their bandcamps and buy their music.
Hey, Salem! It’s been a while. With all the sickness and the holidays and more sickness, we had to take a break. But, we’re back. We really didn’t have anything specific to talk about, we just missed you, so we figured that YOU MISSED US TOO. Peter and Julie are hanging out with Justin Stimson (Mustin Douch) on a rainy Friday evening talking about music and cats and whatever we want. Plus, an “unexpected” guest shows up at the end there. Also, singing. Hang out with us for a while, will you?
https://roughshodradio.files.wordpress.com/2018/01/peterjuliejustinfreestylefinal.mp3If everything goes as planned, we’ll be back next week with No Me Gusta. They’ve got a new album coming out and we want to talk to them about it. Until then, try to go on without us. Hey! Go back and listen to past episodes. They’re all real good.
Peter takes Marc to Muchas Gracias.
Summer Eyes is Ben Thede on guitar and lead vocals, Denny McDowell on guitar and backing vocals, Sean Pass on bass, and Justin Stimson (aka Mustin Douch) on drums. Everybody got together at Julie’s house and talked about the release of their new EP, “Raise the Alarm,” which they’ll be celebrating this Friday, December 15th at The Space.
Also on the bill is Brides, No Me Gusta, Games from Portland with members of Bubble Cats, and our own Peter Degroot’s band Vortex Remover. The show starts at 7pm, is all ages until 9pm, and costs $5 because art has value.
All the guys except Justin (who grew up in Portland) grew together on the mean streets of South Salem. They not only grew up together, but they grew up musically as well. It’s pretty sweet.
Just go ahead and listen.
https://roughshodradio.files.wordpress.com/2017/12/summer-eyes-pod-final.mp3Their EP is available on Bandcamp and at Ranch Records downtown for only $5! They’ll also be for sale at the show. Support some true sons of Salem and show up and show them all the love. There are five bands on the bill, and they’re all pretty different. They’ll be something for everyone. See you there.

A couple months ago, Sam McBride (Mammals in the Hard Drive, The Falcon, King Dot) had a house show with the Startle Easilies, Sustentacula, and Honk Heads. Startle Easilies is a super group with Sam, Julian Snow, and our own Peter Degroot – playing old Degroot B sides. I (Julie) fell in love with Honk Heads (already HUGE fans of Sustentacula). Honk Heads is Sam McBride and partner, Lilly. There is nothing else in Salem like them. Seriously.
At this point, the only way you’ll get to see them is if you catch one of their house shows. Lilly prefers to keep it low key, and we respect that. In fact, it was an honor to be invited into their sanctuary. Felt good. Real good. We should visit again.
We hung out with Sam and Lilly and talked about privacy, Facebook, gropers, changing paradigms, and of course, music. Join us, will you?
https://roughshodradio.files.wordpress.com/2017/11/honkheads-final.mp3Mentions: Sean McLeod, Micky Bare, Chris Webb, Mitch Myers, Murmuring Pines, The Great Idea at The Enchanted Forest, Dandy Warhols, Doug Hoffman, The Space Concert Club, Rejected Art Faire, David Rafn, Rick Dance, Blitzen Trapper, “Flava in ya ear,” Craig Mack, LL Cool J, B.I.G., Dr Dre, Snoop Dogg, The Gourds, Beck, Beastie Boys, The Pumps, Acting Captain, and more…
Salem Flavored Podcandy. This week, with a Portland twist…
What a treat to sit down with Nathan Carson in his home in Portland, Oregon. He’s a musician, booker, promoter, published author, and a decent human being, on top of all that. Peter has known Nathan since way back in the day – mutual fans of each other’s music: Imps of Spring, Moon Patrol, pointlineplane to name a few. Peter was under the weather for this cast, so he’s a little quiet, but he’s there.
Nathan has figured out how to make a living from being a booker/promoter with his booking company Nanotear. It started as a project for booking doom metal, when there
Kayla Dixon of Witch Mountainwasn’t a ton of doom metal bands to be found. Now he books for over 25 metal bands on as many different labels – bands such as Yob, Mike Scheidt, Wizard Rifle, and his own
band Witch Mountain, which he is the drummer. Witch Mountain’s latest single, Midnight plays at the end of the podcast. You can also check it out here.
Nathan also hosts a radio show on XRAY.FM, Wednesday nights at 10pm called “Heavy Metal Sewing Circle.” If that’s not a convenient time for you, the episodes are archived on the website.
And if that weren’t enough, and don’t think it oughta be, Nathan is also a published author. He’s a huge fan of H.P. Lovecraft and the like, so his works are along that vein with a Willamette Valley flavor. He gave me a copy of Starr Creek, which I’m half finished with. He told me it wasn’t nostalgic in an 80s way (set in the 80s), but it definitely nostalgic in a Mid-Willamette Valley way. I am enjoying it, quite a bit. He has stories in several anthologies that you can also find on his Amazon page.
AND, on December 2nd, Nathan will be in Salem at the downtown Book Bin for a reading and signing of his latest project, The Willows. This is part one of a two part comic book that is an adaptation of Algernon Blackwood’s novella of the same name, richly illustrated by Sam Ford. I certainly hope you’ll come say hi at that event.
So, with no further ado, the interview.

Gather ’round everybody for your next piece of Roughshod Podcandy. Peter and I had a lovely time talking with Josh Blanchard of the band Coronation.
https://roughshodradio.files.wordpress.com/2017/11/josh-blanchard-interview-final1.mp3
Coronation just released their new single, “Chemical Reaction,” that will be on their upcoming album “Silicon Days.” We play Chemical Reaction in the middle of the cast, and then play another single (unreleased!) “Heartwave” at the end. That’s right, he gave us an advance listen to their unreleased single! Thank you, Josh.

So, Peter and I were invited to host The Space’s Troubadour Open Mic last Wednesday. We jumped at the chance. It was fun! We enjoyed it! Very much! Have I used enough exclamation points to tell you that we had a good time? Yes! Ok! Well, the actual night was fun, but we had to do a lot of editing and ending up cutting all the live commentary and just left the performances. Peter and I just got together tonight and recorded the talking parts.
Mitchell DailyWill we record an open mic again? Probably not. At least not until we’ve got our shit together a little more. So PLEASE! I’ve been working on this one TOO MUCH and I just slapped it together. Please forgive if the transitions are a little stark. I’m tired and didn’t want to figure out the fade in/out effects tonight.
We’ll be back next week with just sitting down and talking to music buddies.
BUT. There’s some great performances on this by Mitchell Daily, Jess Tumolo, Colton Grizzlyman, Ashley Lute, Jocelyn Paige, Marc Horsejerk, and Vortex Remover. Please enjoy Peter and my learning experience.

Recorded Wednesday, October 4th at The Space Concert Club‘s Green Room
For those of you following along, Austin Rich has left the building. Austin is a busy guy with his Mid-Valley Mutations radio show on KMUZ, Friday nights at 10pm (tune in some time), online zine The Cherry Picker Zine, and he has a variety of his own podcasts including The Capital Couple. So, he has passed the torch to me, Julie, to carry on Roughshod Radio. I hope I can do as good as job as he did. Thank you for all your work, Austin!
That being said, I introduce my new co-host, Peter Degroot. Peter has been in the Salem music scene for a long time. His current projects are Vortex Remover and The Startle Easilies, a new project with Julian Snow and Sam McBride.
On this episode, we meet in the green room at The Space Concert Club and talk about it with Jocelyn Paige, who is the machine behind new Salem group Brides. Brides have a new EP coming out October 29th, and will be celebrated at The Space on that date, which is also Jocelyn’s birthday.
A BIG thanks to Jocelyn and Stan Keightley with their help figuring out the audio editor for my first solo run!
