Cinema Red Pill is a film podcast by Uganda based cinephiles Sharon Rwakatungu (@sharonrwaky), Timothy Niwamanya (@Sir_Tesh) and Joel Tugaineyo (@jntugaineyo). Listen for movie reviews and commentary every week. We talk about classic and contemporary films from Africa and everywhere else.
We discuss two international films: The Zone of Interest and Killers of the Flower Moon. Two movies that showcase horrible events and people in very different ways.
In this episode, Timothy talks to writer/director and soon-to-be entertainment lawyer, Yuhi Amuli. He talks about his journey as a filmmaker, Rwanda’s film industry and how his personal experiences have inspired his two feature films ‘A Taste of Our Land’ and ‘Citizen Kwame’.
In a new episode, we talk about the HBO documentary Savior Complex. We are joined by Gerald Odil (Raldy) who worked as a researcher for the documentary and visual artist, Charity Atukunda. We share our thoughts on the film and have a broader conversation about how these types of ‘saviors’ remain present in Uganda.
Timothy and Sharon discuss the Oscar-nominated documentary 'Bobi Wine: The People's President' in this episode.
In this episode, we talk about our experience attending the Matatu Film Stage, showcasing 6 short films from Uganda and East Africa.
This week we talk about Netflix’s recent short film anthology, ‘African Folktales, Reimagined’ where 6 filmmakers from Africa each made a short film inspired by a folktale from their region.
We rank the films and talk about each entry, digging into what aspects we loved and those we did not.
We talk about Elesin Oba: The Kings Horseman this week, an adaptation of Wole Soyinka’s play Death and the King's Horseman. So happy to be joined by Wilfred Okichie, a prolific Nigerian film critic and curator who adds a lot of great context to the discussion.
Elesin Oba: The Kings Horseman is available on Netflix.
#Episode109 Weren’t we all wondering what the sequel would even be about after the death of Chadwick Boseman? Joel, Sharon and brand new guest Royal Kenogo get into their expectations for the Black Panther sequel, the aspects they enjoyed and those they didn't. WARNING! The episode is full of spoilers please listen after watching the film
#Episode108 We gathered together again to talk about ‘The Woman King’, we talk about the controversy regarding the film's inaccurate depiction of the Dahomey and Agojie and dig into the filmmaking and storytelling aspects that stood out for us.
Happy to have Charity Atukunda back again to help us unpack the film.

In this super-short episode of the podcast, the crew goes over their favourite TV shows that they've been watching recently. Each host had to zero down to one TV show which is no easy feat to do with the good (and bad) stuff out there.
