  • We used to be friends: St. John’s vs Rutgers, Gavitt Games

St. John’s vs Rutgers, a former Big East conference game and perhaps a rivalry, returns as part of this week’s Gavitt Games between the Big East and the Big Ten. It may not be bigger than Duke/ UNC or even Harvard/ Yale, but the Epic Battle will be discussed with our favorite Rutgers people — On the Banks manager Aaron Breitman and Dave White, who used to manage the site.

We shoot some breeze about hoops, Veronica Mars, and also:

    5:30 – talking undefeated Rutgers
9:30 – the changes in Rutgers now that Corey Sanders has moved on
20:00 – will St. John’s extend the rotation for this game?
26:00 – is this what we expected going into the season?
33:00 – Rutgers defense, zone, lockdown defender
The Quinnipiac stars meet on the court for the first time.
42:00 – gut feelings about St. John’s, Rutgers for the season

  • Hype train, featuring Heron & Ponds

The Rumble in the Garden podcast has returned with a new episode; Norman has guest Joseph Nardone on to muse about the NCAA, the effects of the return of Shamorie Ponds and the transfer of Mustapha Heron to St. John’s, and the sudden burst of Red Storm preseason hype — with real, unvarnished talk the whole way.

    This week:

    • Recapping the wild offseason for St. John’s
    • The return of Shamorie Ponds and where his game could land him (with diversions about Marcus Hatten, Omar Cook, Matthew Dellavedova, and not making the NBA)
    • Mustapha Heron trying to get a waiver to play immediately (where we talk about the NCAA’s likely long time frame, and what is the “right” thing for this situation)
    • The St. John’s hype train
    • Listener question on playing time
    • Listener question on the team’s ceiling (dependent on defense)
    • Tariq Owens
    • Listener question on favorite Big East player of the 2000s
    • Listener question on the high number of transfers out of the St. John’s program

  • Sun Devil’s dynamo guards, newcomer big men – talking Arizona State before the matchup in LA

St. John’s is facing Arizona. Naturally, we have questions about not just the “New Leadership Model” but about Arizona State guard Tra Holder and forward Romello White, who are going to cause problems for St. John’s in Friday’s game in the Staples Center (Basketball Hall of Game Classic). So we reached out to Max from House of Sparky for more detail

    Topics:

New leadership model, and that Arizona State press release
Jump to ranked 16 – powered by the front court
    Hurley’s offseason player losses
Now only 8-9 deep, Romello White has been a post presence – not dominant in the post but a beast on the boards
Tra Holder & Shannon Evans, low turnover guards, share the ball in the backcourt
    ASU’s defense, tho…
Worried about versatility vs St. John’s

    Listener Questions!
    – LoVett’ status
    – Is St. John’s “on schedule”
    – Out of conferebnce strength?
    – How St. John’s should attack on Friday?
    – Has Bashir’s game progressed?
    – How many Big East games will St. John’s win?

  • St. John’s travels to the Magic Kingdom for the Advocate Invitational

St. John’s swings into Thanksgiving week 4-0, with a nationally-televised, bracketed tournament to showcase themselves in. It’s the kind of sessions like these where school reputations are made, and where players gain the confidence they will need through the grueling conference play.

We welcome Blogging the Bracket’s Chris Dobbertean to dish about the Advocare Invitational Field, and where it ranks against other tournaments. Spoiler: it’s not the tops of the tourney fields. Thanks, Nike.

    • How does the Advocare Invitational rate as a tournament?
    • The issue with facing the wrong teams in the Advocare Tourney?
    • What’s the worst path, the best path?
    • The dangers of facing the University of Central Florida – plus the potential of the rest of field.
    • How has St. John’s looked?
    • The decline of Twitter as a “sports bar”

Plus listener questions on the front court and recruiting.

Thank you for listening to the podcast.
