Mocker is a Goop boy with a habit he simply cannot switch off -- whatever voice goes into his ears comes straight back out again, pitch perfect, not one tiny bit wrong. It's funny, mostly. Until he mimics his best friend Spirit's strange and beautiful sound at the old stone wall at the edge of Goop World, and the wall swallows him whole.

He lands in the Gobi Desert in Mongolia, tiny and alone at the base of the Flaming Cliffs -- ancient orange rock filled with oval shapes sealed inside the stone for eighty million years. With only a wild Bactrian camel for company and something moving beneath the sand that no one wants to get too close to, Mocker quickly discovers that copying the wrong voice at the wrong moment can land you somewhere very difficult to get down from.

Hugalina and Kissalina are the most affectionate twin Goops in all of Goop World — Hugalina hugs everything in sight whether it asks for it or not, and Kissalina never meets anything without first reaching for her shimmering pot of vanilla lip balm. They land with an enormous splash in the extraordinary bubblegum-pink waters of Lake Retba in Senegal, where salt harvesters move through the shallows with flat baskets on their heads and pink pelicans stand unbothered on the shore. But when a fallen basket disturbs the living microorganisms that give the lake its color, the water turns a deep, ominous red — and something beneath the surface begins to pull.

Will Kissalina's most prized possession be enough to calm a lake that has been alive longer than anyone can remember? And what does a Senegalese salt harvester know about love that the twins are only just beginning to understand?
