As I am learning Surface Pattern Design, I've some encountered some hurdles. Because of these challenges, I want to analyze many successful surface pattern designers, what attracts me to their work, and analyze their collections and patterns to see if I can create the formula I've been needing so that the hero pattern stops eluding me. In this series, I am digging into what makes their collections successful and try to reverse-engineer their collections, mini-collections, and specifically how they construct their hero patterns. This week I am analyzing designer, Mercedes Cortés' Whimsical Boho Garden Mini Collection which was an award-winner in one of Spoonflower's bi-monthly challenges. I do not personally know Mercedes but am a fan of her work and love that she has different styles. I am trying to keep these analyses under ten minutes and take you along as I look at some of my favorite surface pattern designers. This has been a long time coming. New habits, new obstacles. I tried shooting with two cameras and it was pretty much an epic fail. Not so much in the shooting, although that could have been better but mainly in the editing. I should have done a lot of things differently. SHOULD, SHOULD, SHOULD. So instead I will share what I learned. I need to ask myself what is most important: keeping to a schedule or trying something new. I guess here we saw the fail of keeping to a schedule. This means when I am trying something new I need to practice on a short something instead of content with three hours. YIKES. Ok lesson learned.

This week I have faced the hurdles. Taken time to study, try, and overcome. I've won this week, because I have completed things that I have not even attempted because I thought it would take so long to complete. I have a new philosophy I am still getting used to. I am going to make time to figure it out. I am going to not wait because I am scared. Hope this episode gives you some encouragement and hope.
