Ep. 159 - Uterine Fibroid Treatment Options with Dr. Suzanne LeBlang

Dr. Fiona Lovely is a longevity, health and wellness expert with specialties in menopause medicine, functional neurology and functional medicine.  She is speaking to the topics of women's health around perimenopause and menopause.

Uterine fibroids are a very common concern for women who are still menstruating.  They are the cause of extreme and chronic pain, heavy bleeding and there aren't great treatment options available.  Today I welcome Dr Suzanne LeBlang to the show to discuss a novel therapy for treatment of fibroids - focused ultrasound.

I had never heard about this treatment until Dr. LeBlang shared her knowledge.  This conversation highlights how the non-invasive technique can treat uterine fibroids using thermal ablation, without the need for incisions or injections.  This is also available for many other health concerns such as thyroid nodules,  Parkinson's disease, breast tumours, tremors and others.  It has been FDA approved since 2004.

Overall, this episode underscores the importance of non-invasive treatment options for women's health concerns, with focused ultrasound emerging as a promising alternative for various conditions.

Dr. LeBlang is the Director of Clinical Relationships at the Focused Ultrasound Foundation (FUS) and was trained as a neuroradiologist.  You can find out more about this treatment option at fusfoundation.org or on Instagram here.

Dr. Fiona Lovely is a longevity, health and wellness expert with specialties in menopause medicine, functional neurology and functional medicine.  She is speaking to the topics of women's health around perimenopause and menopause.

Have you felt like your digestion has changed with your perimenopausal march forward?  Do you experience bloating, heartburn, reflux, diarrhea, constipation or IBS?  Do you wonder if your food is actually being absorbed and used well?  What's the point of consuming all this protein we are being asked to eat if we aren't absorbing it!  Listen in as Certified Sports Nutritionist, Wade Lightheart educates us on the digestive changes we can experience at midlife.

Wade's story is inspiring - he ran his first marathon at 50 years old after spending decades in the bodybuilding competion industry.  He realized that in order to get the performance he desired, he required a different level of digestion of his food/fuel.   He is an expert on enzymes, gut health and nutrition optimization.   He is on a mission to help people gain and keep health, long term!

Wade realized from his own nutrition practice that women wouldn't always bounce back in their performance after pregnancy and he went about finding out out why.   He shares this discovery and how he helped women manage this in our chat.  Did you know that you require good gut health to have good hormonal health?  We talk about why in this episode.  Enzymes, probiotics, protein optimization and much more.

Wade has a clear and contagious zest for life and he is freely sharing his protocols for a great life with us!  You can find out more about Wade Lightheart and his work here and on Instagram here.

February is Women's Heart Health month and for today's episode, I am joined by the extraordinary Dr. Jayne Morgan,  Cardiologist and VP of Medical Affairs at Hello Heart.  Heart health for women is a hot topic and Dr. Morgan and I speak about the importance of women being aware of their heart heath throughout life but particularily at menopause.

Listen in and learn how your pregnancy experience can predict future heart concerns.  Dr. Morgan also tells us exactly how to ask our doctor for necessary tests to keep our heart health in mind.

Estrogen affects cardiovascular health and how perimenopause is a time of great change for our heart.  We discuss how a heart attack presents for women (hint:  it's different from the classic presentation that men can experience!) and what symptoms you shouldn't ignore.  These are common symptoms that might make you wonder if you, too, should ask your doctor to check out your heart!

Dr. Fiona Lovely is a longevity, health and wellness expert with specialties in menopause medicine, functional neurology and functional medicine.  She is speaking to the topics of women's health around perimenopause and menopause.

What does it take to optimize health at perimenopause and menopause?  Dr. Scott Sherr is here to help us sort through the details of making the second half of your life, the best half!   Let's prioritize wellness above all else.

The root cause of health is quite simple:  it's all the things you think it should be - food, movement, sleep, relationships, etc.  And it's paying attention to your metabolic and mitochondrial health.  We might here these words thrown around but do we really know what to do to help ourselves?

Dr Scott Sherr suggests we can set the disease aside and optimize our health measures.

We talk about methylene blue for our mitochondria (think:  brain fog, low energy, sleep issues, sluggish detox and more) and I am all in on this health-hack (check out Troscriptions link below for where I get my methylene blue), and I bet you will be too!  Scott suggests we act as a bridge between medicine and alternative medicine, opening up the information access for all.

Ep. 150 - Magnesium for Perimenopause and Prevention of Aging with Dr. Greg Kelly

Dr. Fiona Lovely is a longevity, health and wellness expert with specialties in menopause medicine, functional neurology and functional medicine.  She is speaking to the topics of women's health around perimenopause and menopause.

Many of us have heard that magnesium is important for our health, but have we heard why?  Dr. Greg Kelly returns to the show in this episode to discuss the powerhouse of magnesium.  Turns out, you cannot go wrong by adding magnesium to your supplements!  More than 50% of us are deficient and the kind of magnesium you want to supplement with, can be confusing.  Not all magnesium is the same and the bioavailability makes a huge difference.

We discuss the role of magnesium in aging hallmarks, in energy production, in brain health and menstrual health too.   Magnesium protects us from the effects of chronic stress too.

Dr. Kelly and I also discuss the role of Akkermansia in the microbiome of people who have smaller bodies and whether therapy with it can help solve the conundrum of weight for some of us.  This is an exciting development!

Greg also shares the updates to cellular senescence - cellular aging, the right cutting edge of anti-aging medicine.  We talk about muscle stem cells and more.  As always, Dr. Kelly brings the science to the people, and we are better for it!

Ep. 149 - Art As Healer At Midlife with Creativity and Grief Coach Susie Stonefield

Dr. Fiona Lovely is a longevity, health and wellness expert with specialties in menopause medicine, functional neurology and functional medicine.  She is speaking to the topics of women's health around perimenopause and menopause.

When Susie Stonefield emailed us and said "I make people cry with art supplies" we knew we had to follow up and ask questions!  Susie is a Creativity and Grief Coach, and teaches us how to art journal; using art supplies to help us express the feelings we cannot necessarily put words to.  Something she calls "the wordless heart".  Susie gives us permission to kindness, to compassion and to treat ourselves gently.

Grief is an obstruction, Susie teaches us.  And it prevents us from finding balance, and experiencing the lovely parts of life often.  We shared our own experiences in this conversation - grief, midlife, holding on tight to keep the wheels on the bus, like so many of you.  I know you will find yourself and sweet relief in this beautiful conversation, just like I did.

Susie created a gorgeous workbook for us, I loved playing with the exercises within.  🩷 You can download that workbook right here.

Find out more about Susie Stonefield on IG @creativity_midwife and her website (she hosts retreats in her NoCal art studio 🎨):  unfoldart.com.
