Join Duncan McLeish as he examines horror films, from the classic to the obscure, and reveals the unknown stories behind the movies. Focusing on European horror, each season revolves around a central theme.
Welcome to the season finale of Chronicle Podcast (An Almanac of Old World Horrors), this is season 2 episode 6.
This is a podcast dedicated to discussing European Horror Cinema only and is the brainchild of podcaster Duncan McLeish (The Podcast Under the Stairs). Each season will run for 6 episodes and drop every two weeks with season 2 looking exclusively at European Horror Cinema through its Witches.
With an emphasis on giving you an insight into some of the weird and wonderful stories behind the movies, we conclude this new seasons journey with Witching & Bitching (2013). Closing out the season with one of the greatest talents in horror comedy from the continent of Europe. Alex De La Iglesia has been honing his craft for over 2 decades of absurdist gallows humour with little recognition from the vast amount of horror fans until Witching & Bitching arrived.
Chronicle Podcast was researched, written, recorded and produced by me for you!!

With an emphasis on giving you an insight into some of the weird and wonderful stories behind the movies, we continue this new seasons journey with The Witches (1990). Nicolas Roeg was know for his disjointed narratives, arthouse filming style and his overtly sexual themes in his movies so he was clearly the obvious choice to direct an adaptation of this Roald Dahl classic kids novel. The end result is one of the scariest kids movies ever made.

With an emphasis on giving you an insight into some of the weird and wonderful stories behind the movies, we continue this new seasons journey with Suspiria (1977). Dario Argento was dubbed the Italian Hitchcock because of his crime thriller origins in his first three Galli but it was his first “true” horror movie that would become one of the most well respected and terrifying movies committed to film.

With an emphasis on giving you an insight into some of the weird and wonderful stories behind the movies, we continue this new seasons journey with Mark of the Devil (1970). Where Witchfinder General marked a move away from the campy over the top theatrics of Hammer Horror & Amicus Productions for a darker more sadistic feel, Mark of the Devil raised the bar of shock to audiences who didn’t know whether or not they themselves were ready for it.

With an emphasis on giving you an insight into some of the weird and wonderful stories behind the movies, we begin this new seasons journey with Häxan (1922). Quite possibly one of the most unique movies ever made, this faux documentary part surreal confessional of tortured suspect witches and text book historical data make this silent movie a truly unique viewing.

With an emphasis on giving you an insight into some of the weird and wonderful stories behind the movies, we conclude our vampiric journey with Let the Right One In (2008). Just as the vampire genre looked to be consumed with latex clad comic book styled ultra vixens and the beginning of a franchise where the vampires sparkled in the daylight, Sweden turned there hand to this much maligned sub-genre. The result would be unanimously recognised as one of the most beautifully haunting tales in cinematic vampire lore.

Roger Ebert said of Philip Ridley’s The Reflecting Skin that it was like David Lynch’s Blue Velvet but better and after its premier at Cannes critics declared it the next big cult movie…I wager most of you have never heard of it and its something I desperately want you all to watch.

A movie billed as one of the most faithful adaptations to the Stoker source material from one of Europe’s most sleazy exploitation directors? Throw into the mix Christopher Lee as the Count in one of the few occasions he dawned the cloak and fangs outside Hammer Horror Studios, Klaus Kinski as Renfield & Herbert Lom as Van Helsing…have I got your attention yet?

Italy came out the second World War after a length period of facist rule in which horror movies were prohibited. Within 20 years of the end of the war a reluctant director making his debut feature would change the landscape of Italian cinema and birth almost 30 years of Italian horror dominance in Europe.
