Weird Darkness covers a 1974 Wyoming abduction account, the 1986 Central Park killing of Jennifer Levin, the long search for the Holy Grail, a blood cult in the Sierra Madre, and a run of small mistakes that redirected history.
It opens with Carl Higdon, who took the afternoon of October 25th, 1974 off work and drove into the Medicine Bow National Forest in Carbon County, Wyoming, to hunt elk. He came back describing a six-foot humanoid who called himself Ausso One, a drill fused where his right hand should have been, and a transparent cube holding five paralyzed elk. Doctors who examined him afterward found the tuberculosis scarring gone from his lungs, Leo Sprinkle put him under hypnotic regression that November, and a polygraph in 1978 came back clean.
From there the episode turns to the morning of August 26th, 1986, when a cyclist found 18-year-old Jennifer Levin dead near a tree in Central Park, hours after she left Dorrian's Red Hand on the Upper East Side with Robert Chambers. He told investigators her death was rough sex gone wrong, the medical examiner determined she had been strangled, and the press named him the Preppy Killer. Chambers pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter and served 15 years, drew a longer sentence in 2008 for selling cocaine and heroin out of his Manhattan apartment, and was paroled in 2023.
Next comes the Holy Grail, which the Bible never actually describes. Chrétien de Troyes made it a divine object in his unfinished Conte del Graal around 1180, Robert de Boron tied it to the Last Supper and the crucifixion in Joseph d'Arimathie two decades later, and Arthurian legend sent Perceval and Sir Galahad after it. The chalice has since been claimed by the Basilica of San Isidoro in León, the Valencia Cathedral, and roughly 200 other places across Europe.
The fourth segment moves to Yerba Buena, a communal farm of about 20 families in the eastern foothills of the Sierra Madre, where Santos and Cayetano Hernández passed themselves off as prophets of the Incan gods in 1962 and later brought Magdalena Solis back from Monterrey to play a goddess for them. On peyote and cannabis she came to believe she was Coatlicue, the Aztec mother goddess, and ordered human sacrifices in which hearts were cut from victims who were still alive. A 14-year-old named Sebastian Guerrero stumbled into one of those rituals in a cave in late May 1963, and he and Inspector Luis Martinez were both found with their hearts removed.
The episode closes on small errors that changed everything downstream: an unlocked gate that let the Turks into Constantinople in 1453, a time-zone miscalculation that put Bay of Pigs bombers over Cuba an hour ahead of their air cover, a 1631 printing of the King James Bible that dropped the word not from the commandment against adultery, and a Florida employee who forgot a login and left concealed-weapons applications running without background checks from February 2016 to March 2017.

Weird Darkness brings together six accounts of murder and high strangeness: a Denver stepmother who fed her family crushed glass, a St. Louis patent-medicine salesman accused of being Jack the Ripper, an Arizona ranch the government bought and sealed, a second-grader warned of two deaths before anyone made the calls, the man who said he took apart alien craft at Area 51, and a Sunday school superintendent who left bodies inside his own church.It opens on the October 1930 disappearance of ten-year-old Leona O'Loughlin, daughter of Denver police detective Leo O'Loughlin, whose body was found floating in Berkeley Park Lake two days later. Her stomach held ground glass, and so did her father's, both of them served from the bowl of rice her stepmother Pearl O'Loughlin had set on the table between them. Pearl had already tried the same method on her father-in-law's sugar bowl and on her sister's cat and dog, and the story comes from Troy Taylor's "Suffer the Children – American Horrors, Homicides and Hauntings."From there the show turns to Dr. Francis J. Tumblety, an uneducated patent-medicine peddler who kept a collection of women's uteruses in jars and was renting rooms on Batty Street in Whitechapel when the 1888 Ripper murders began. Inspector John Littlechild of Scotland Yard named him as a suspect in 1913, and the whole theory rests on one disputed date – whether Tumblety made bail on November 8th or November 16th, with Mary Kelly butchered in her bed on the 9th. He died at St. John's Hospital in St. Louis in May 1903, an estate of more than $135,000 behind him.Next is Bradshaw Ranch, 140 acres outside Sedona in the Verde Valley, where Linda Bradshaw reported orbs, shadow people, four short gray aliens in tan one-piece uniforms, a Bigfoot she nicknamed Big Girl, and a five-foot bipedal lizard standing on a dirt path one evening. She wrote it up with ufologist Tom Dongo in "Merging Dimensions: The Opening Portals of Sedona," and instrument readings on the property measured a magnetic field hundreds of times stronger than the surrounding desert. The U.S. government bought the ranch in May 2003 and closed it to the public without explanation.Then a Weirdo family member named Ashley Delia describes the morning her family drove out to tell her second-grade cousin that their grandfather had died in a hotel room in Effingham, Illinois. The girl wasn't surprised – a little old lady in the basement of their newly built house had already told her it was his time, and told her not to be sad. Four months later the lady came back to say the girl's other grandfather was going next, and the phone rang twenty minutes after that.After that comes Bob Lazar, who sat for a KLAS-TV interview in May 1989 under the name Dennis and said the military was reverse-engineering alien craft at a facility near Groom Lake. He described a ship that turns its belly toward its destination before it moves, which is close to what Navy aviators recorded in the Gimbal and Tic Tac encounters the Pentagon released decades later.The episode closes on Easter week of 1895 at Emanuel Baptist Church in San Francisco, where someone opened a closet in the church library and found Minnie Williams strangled and stabbed, her hands nearly severed. A search of the building turned up Blanche Lamont in the belfry, stripped and posed with her hands folded. Sunday school superintendent William Henry Theodore Durrant had courted both women, and the jury convicted him in five minutes, then sat and finished their cigars before walking back in so the verdict wouldn't look rushed.

Everybody on the block knew the tall man in the black cloak who never spoke and shut his eyes whenever a woman passed him on the sidewalk, and nobody thought to wonder why until the morning the janitor came running out of the tenement shouting for help.

Written in 1942, “Mimic” eventually inspired the 1997 horror film of the same name. The short story was written by Martin Pearson, though you may also know him as Donald A. Wollheim or Darrel G. Raynor, as he used many pseudonyms when writing. The story is a simple premise, talking of how some insects disguise themselves as other insects, or some animals disguise themselves as other animals, in order to not be eaten by the creatures above them in the food chain. At the top of the food chain is man – do we have mimics disguised as us – in plain sight?
