Is there a God who is our Father?

The answer to that question is simply, absolutely and unequivocally “yes” there is a God who is your father.

The most compelling, life-transforming, and enduring evidence of God is the witness that comes from His Spirit. Having said that, reason plays its role as well.

The Lord said, “And behold, all things have their likeness, and all things are created and made to bear record of me…” Look around and see how God manifests Himself to us, especially in our day, not only by the restoration, scriptures, and prophets, but also by all that has been revealed in this day of remarkable scientific achievement.

Life on earth depends on a set of highly specialized and immensely complex combination of conditions. It involves complexity and precision that defy human comprehension in physics, astronomy, microbiology, biology, physiology, proportionality, consciousness, and cosmology. We see God every day if we have eyes to see Him.

How can you know the truth? How do you close the gap between your beliefs and the truth? How do you avoid deception? There are primary questions, and there are secondary questions. The primary truths and questions are the most important. Everything else is subordinate. There are very few primary questions. Here are four of them:1. Is there a God who is our Father?2. Is Jesus Christ the Son of God, the Savior of the World?3. Was (Is) Joseph Smith a prophet? 4. Is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints the kingdom of God on the earth? The secondary questions are unending. They include questions about Church history, plural marriage, people of African descent and the priesthood, women and the priesthood, and so forth. In a world of uncertainty, you can be certain about the answers to the primary questions not as a matter of faith but knowledge grounded in experience, study, reason and revelation, and if you are settled, you can chart your course without wavering like a “wave of the sea driven with the wind” or “tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine and the sleight of men.”

People at times criticize the Church, claiming it unreasonably restricts lifestyle and free choice. This point of view, while understandable, is truth turned upside-down. There is no freedom without choice and there is no choice without knowledge.

Agency is expanded, not restricted by knowledge of truth. The greater the knowledge, the broader the agency and the greater the freedom. One cannot, for example, choose an eternal family, to be sealed to one’s spouse and children without the knowledge of sealing ordinances, priesthood, and the Restoration. One cannot choose to live the law of chastity without understanding the law and the consequences of obedience and disobedience. Many people do not understand and, therefore, they are not free to choose.

The Lord reveals knowledge, line upon line, precept upon precept gently expanding agency commensurate with one’s capacity to understand and obey.

Only by gaining knowledge are people “placed in a state to act according to their wills.” Otherwise, there is no decision to be made, no choice, no agency, no freedom—only the bondage of ignorance.
