Podcast 10 We're back! (again) Jim was in England and Brexit happened. Will English amps like Marshall, Orange, Victory and Vox be less expensive? Squirrel! Led Zeppelin was found to be not guilty of stealing Spirit's song Tarus. Who cares what the court says, Jim and Matt have opinions. Not being lawyers does not deter them from talking about the descending chromatic fourth. Is this like Vanilla Ice and Queen's “Under Pressure”? The do-woop cord progression? Could Metallica sue for other bands writing a song in E minor? Where does influence end a ripping off begin? Matt retells his Eric Johnson story. Cellphones and concerts. Jag-offs. What is the issue here? Seriously. Jim says, “get over it, artists! Let people take some pictures” Matt agrees. Blah, blah, blah, politics, blah, blah. Back to music. It's always a good time to talk about Steve Vai. The 25th anniversary of “Passion and Warfare” along with a new release of “Modern Primitive” The two-for-one release is a great deal, maybe even a steal, on physical media but why the heck is it so expensive to get a high resolution download?! Jim gives a callout to Jason Becker and his re-issued “numbers” guitar. Matt going on some bizarre Facebook rant about how they are changing the meaning of friend. Are “real fans” paying the price for casual fans? Physical media, streaming, you tube... What is the music industry's new business model? Jim concludes that Zeppelin was influenced by other music: they heard some music and wrote some music. Episode 0009: Matt wasn’t on the boat when the boat left the dock. He didn’t “get” Prince along with Jimmy Buffet and Bruce Springsteen. He doesn’t understand why Prince was considered a genius as compared to Miles Davis. Jim explains to him why he is wrong. Matt fires back with “Kind of Blue”. Jim acknowledges it as a very good “demo” album and brigs up the Prince album “Around the World in a Day” Really, what is improvisation all about? Jim doesn’t “get” it and Matt tries to explain it and why Jim is wrong. Back and forth they work their way back to Prince and his solo on “My Guitar Gently Weeps” tribute to George Harrison. Matt says “Meh” and Jim likes it. They both agree that Joe Satriani is great and could have done it just as well as Prince did. Could Prince beat up Miles Davis? Jim Thinks so. Who is the “King” How can people compare to Elvis? Why was Elvis “King”? Jim begins to think that maybe Matt doesn’t like Prince because he mostly just heard the music on the radio not unlike how Jim once felt about Steely Dan. Jim’s talks about his NEW TOY! Electro-Harmonics Micro Synth! <3 <3 <3 Jim feels that “weird” pedals like this put up walls on your creativity that you are forced to navigate. By putting yourself in a new box, you can break free of an old one. They discuss how crazy effect pedals are not unlike music theory “rules” and Baroque. Matt thinks Titanic was a dumb movie. Jim never saw it, but he knows how it ends. They agree that Avatar was “meh” In conclusion, Jim doesn’t like “Kind of Blue” as much as he likes Anthrax.
