2025 Review, 2026 Preview, and Lessons Learned Over the Past Year

What a year it was in 2025!

    Serious growth with IFAST Basketball.

    The gym is humming along.

And my kids are getting BIG!

But even with all the good stuff, there’s always a need to look back and reflect.

Sure some things went right – but I definitely wasn’t perfect.

Where did I miss the mark?

And what can I do better in 2026?

I cover all that – and some lessons I learned along the way – in this week’s episode!

    Quotable Quotes:

It’s not about giving my kids more stuff. It’s about making memories and doing things that they’ll remember and cherish for a lifetime

If you build it, they will come. Well, you know what? That sounds great. And it makes for an awesome movie. But it doesn’t work in real life!

The more curious you are, the more enjoyable this whole training and coaching thing is

This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast:

    • Family updates: Team Robertson is crushing life right now!
    • Awesome trips and travel in 2025, as well as experiences we’ll remember for a lifetime
    • Why I finally decided to push IFAST Basketball, and how I’ll continue to tweak and refine it in the years to come
    • How December of 2025 somehow became my most productive month of the year, and helped me really lock in for 2026
    • My life/work theme’s for 2024/2025, and how that’s evolved now for 2026
    • Why the mantra “If you build it, they will come” is absolutely NOT TRUE
    • Personal goals for 2026, including how I’m investing in my body to stay healthy
    • Professional goals for RTS, IFAST Basketball, and thoughts on some big projects for the year!

    Quotable Quotes:

The more a team has engaged with us – more entry points, more contacts – the more likely they are to succeed

When whoop first came out and coaches were like, why are my athletes better in the yellow? I’m like, “it’s okay if they’re not in the green!”

We have to work as our own team to make sure this all works together

    • How to build a tight knit team and community to help ensure success!

Cody McBroom on Building Unbreakable Self-Control, Self-Discipline, and Self-Belief

    What’s the difference – or maybe the intersection – between self-control, self-discipline and self-belief?

And even if you don’t care so much about the semantics and definitions, how can YOU build more of each to become an upgraded version of yourself?

This is something I’ve been fascinated by for the bulk of my adult life, and today Cody McBroom and I are going to break all this down in detail.

Now if you’ve never heard of Cody before, he’s the owner of Tailored Coaching Method and the Choose Hard podcast.

But perhaps most importantly, he’s a guy that’s helped thousands of people lose weight – and if you’ve ever coached anyone on nutrition, you know that self-control, self-discipline and self-belief are all KEY factors in their success.

    Quotable Quotes:

Choose hard, because the hard path leads to the good result

Self-discipline is doing what you don’t want to do repetitively to get the result you want

Awareness precedes change; knowing the challenge is coming helps you face it

Borrow belief from others; their success can inspire your own

The quicker you act, the shorter the feedback loop, the more it reaffirms your belief

This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast:

    • Why Cody was drawn to learning more about self-control, self-discipline, self-belief and self-respect
    • The power of “Choosing Hard” versus taking the easy way out
    • How your environment and the people around you positively (or negatively) impact your self-control
    • The power of “If-Then” Frameworks to make decision-making less stressful and more automatic
    • Struggling with self-confidence? Why you should “borrow belief” from others to drive your journey
    • The power of positive feedback loops, and how they can fuel your self-belief and performance
    • How to overcome self-doubt – once and for all
    • The 10,000 Hour Rule: Is it really as easy as logging 10k hours to become an expert?
    • A few final takeaways to make sure YOU upgrade your training, coaching and your life!

How to Train and Fuel the Next Generation of Female Athletes with Cassandra Forsythe

You know how I know Cassanandra Forsythe is awesome?

She said a big part of why she got into strength training and working out was watching one of my all-time favorite shows as a kid – American Gladiators!

Now in all seriousness, sporting a Ph.D. in Kinesiology and a Masters Degree in Nutrition & Metabolism, Cass really is a force both in the strength and conditioning and nutrition spaces, and I couldn’t be more excited to bring her on the show.

And today, we’re going to talk about her work with young female athletes, and how she’s helping them not only train for performance but also nourish their bodies along the way!

    Quotable Quotes:

I wanted to be that professor that students remember for making a real impact.

Empowering young athletes to become machines that won’t break is my mission.

Yoga was a new challenge that humbled me and transformed my approach to fitness.

This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast:

    • Cassandra’s journey from a fascination with American Gladiators to leader in the nutrition and exercise science spaces.
    • How chronic lower back pain and health challenges early in life lead her to the worlds of training and nutrition.
    • Why it’s so important to Cass to blend the science but also the real-world/practical sides of training.
    • Her overall teaching philosophy, and why it extends beyond education and moves towards inspiration.
    • How to create programs that are truly fun and engaging for young athletes.
    • The massive shift in the fitness industry from aesthetics to performance training.
    • Thoughts on getting your female athletes to focus on fueling and nourishment versus “diets.”
    • Why she originally got started in yoga, and how it’s helped fill in gaps with her physical development.
    • How YOU can get started with yoga or mobility, and why it can help you not only train longer, but stay healthier to boot!

If you’ve ever competed in strength sport, you know the platform can be a lonely place.

You’ve trained for weeks or months on end, and here you are – standing in front of a bunch of strangers, trying to move a weight you’ve never lifted before.

So what happens when things go wrong?

    You miss your first lift?

    Your legs feel heavy?

Or anxiety kicks in and your brain starts to spaz out?

Well luckily whether it’s on the platform, in sports, or just in life, today’s guest is going to help us out!

Wil Fleming is an Olympic weightlifting coach, author of Strong Mind, and the founder of 1Kilo, where he has helped athletes from youth beginners to Olympians unlock their potential through world-class training and mental performance strategies.

A former collegiate hammer thrower and Masters World Champion in weightlifting, Wil has coached multiple national champions and Olympians, including during the Paris 2024 Games.

And in this episode, we’re going to help you and/or your athletes take their mindset to the next level!

    Quotable Quotes:

More lifts are made or missed in people’s heads than through their actual movements

Mental toughness is making a mistake and then having the wherewithal to come back

Confidence is earned through previous performances, not just by telling yourself you’re a winner

This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast:

    • Wil’s journey from collegiate thrower to Masters World Champion and elite-level Olympic weightlifting coach
    • Why he decided to write an entire book revolving around mindset training for lifters
    • The most common issues that strength athletes deal with, and how to address them

    • Arousal: Finding the sweet spot so you perform at your best
    • 1 or 2 things that everyone who listens can use and apply TODAY to get more out of their time in the gym!

Hamstring Strains, Groins Pulls, and How to Stop Them with Ian Oskar Katanec

Whether it’s due to the increased pace of play, stronger and more explosive athletes, or poor management of the training and recovery process, it should come as no surprise that soft-tissue injuries are on the rise.

And if you’ve ever worked in soccer or basketball, you know that hamstring strains and groin pulls can easily shut your athletes down for weeks – or even MONTHS.

So what kinds of things can WE do as trainers, coaches or even rehab professionals to address these issues?

Well from his roots as a professional motoscross driver, to working with elite, International-level soccer players, Ian Oscar Katanec has a unique perspective on athletic development and injuries.

Not only is he a hands-on manual therapist – which is a really rigorous and intensive program in Slovenia – but also a strength coach, so he really sees all sides of the rehab-training continuum.

And in this episode, we’re going to try and figure out why we’re seeing so many hamstring and groin pulls in sports!

    Quotable Quotes:

When things get hard, you’re exactly where you’re supposed to be, so keep going

It’s not about doing exercises again, it’s about doing them the right way

The best way to stay fit is to go after something, even when you’re busy.

This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast:

    • Ian’s unique journey from professional motocross to manual therapist, coach and business owner.
    • Why biomechanics are such a foundational area to learn, whether you’re focused on injury-reduction or sports performance.
    • The story behind the Levo Belt, and why he created it to help people move and feel better.
    • Some of the challenges he faced as the head strength and conditioning coach for an International-level soccer team.
    • His thoughts on why we’re seeing so many hamstring strains and groin pulls in sports like soccer and basketball.
    • An anatomical overview of the pelvis, and why the mantra of “more strength” isn’t always the answer!
    • Areas OUTSIDE OF the hamstrings and groin you should probably focus on to get better results.
    • The role manual therapy can play in improving performance and reducing injuries.
    • Why there’s more to rehab than low-level “correctives,” and what he uses alongside those to improve buy-in and get better results!

Whether it’s the professional, collegiate, or high school ranks, it feels like torn ACL’s are now the rule versus the exception.

And while we can’t outright prevent these injuries, we can maximize any athletes comeback after they’ve happened – and that’s what we’re going to dive into today!

Dan Lorenz is the Director of Sports Medicine at Lawrence Memorial Hospital and OrthoKS in Lawrence, KS where he also serves as Program Director for the LMH Sports Physical Therapy Residency.

Over his distinguished career he’s also worked in the professional ranks for the Chicago White Sox, the Kansas City Chiefs, and in 2018, was recognized by the NSCA as the Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation Professional of the Year.

And in this episode, we’re going to take a deep dive into optimizing ACL rehab!

    Quotable Quotes:

For every month you wait past six months, your risk of re-tear goes down 24% with each successive month.

Nothing ruins a great surgery more than bad rehab.

You have to trust the process. You have to do what is asked of you and make small goals.

It’s not about the calendar like timeframes. It’s objective criteria that you meet to pass.

This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast:

    • Dan shares his journey from a suburban Chicago upbringing to becoming a sports med director.
    • Why you shouldn’t rush into surgery after an ACL tear, and why pre-op treatment is so important.
    • Dan’s thoughts on various ACL grafts, and the ones he’s seen the most success rehabbing.
    • The difference between medical and physical clearance! (This is so important, PLEASE listen to this section if you’re coming back!)
    • Opening the lines of communication between the athlete, parent, physician AND rehab professional to achieve a great outcome.
    • The role BFR training can play both in ACL rehab, as well as for the older athlete with joint degeneration.
    • Why BFR is a great modality when mechanical load drives an increase in pain or symptoms.
    • Thoughts on ACL timelines and recovery – why every athlete is different and why waiting/slowing down could be the best thing you do!
    • The mental aspects of recovery, and why we need to think about an athletes fear of re-injury and the importance of mental readiness.
    • Finally, Dan’s advice to parents: “Don’t rush it,” underscoring the importance of patience in the recovery process.

10 Tips to Become a Happy, Healthy, and More Successful Coach

I’m not joking when I say this podcast could easily be the most important thing you listen to this year.

Seriously – the advice I’m going to give you in this episode could easily be worth tens of thousands, if not HUNDREDS of thousands of dollars.

Unlike a lot of the influencer fitness pros and online “mentors,” I’m still working with and connecting to real coaches everyday.

And in this episode, I’m going to share the most common issues that real coaches like YOU are dealing with every single day.

So while they might not ALL apply to you, I guarantee a few of these are going to hit home.

    Let’s do this!

    Quotable Quotes:

Start with lifestyle design first. Your career should follow your lifestyle, not the other way around

    —–

If it’s not a yes right now with enthusiasm, then it’s definitely gonna be a no down the line

    —–

Be reflective of the impact you make on people’s lives every single day

This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast:

    • Why starting with the question “What kind of career do I want” may be the WRONG QUESTION.
    • The power of living beneath your means (especially when you’re starting out).
    • Arguably the most important non-training book you’ll ever read (don’t worry – it’s linked below!)
    • The power of your coaching inner circle – and how to starting growing it today.
    • Thought experiment: Are you taking care of yourself like you tell your clients and athletes to?
    • Why you should seriously consider outsourcing certain elements of your health and wellness.
    • How to recover like a pro.
    • Are you a people pleaser? Trying to change your ways? If so, learn how I’ve started saying “No” more.
    • Why I’ve tried to curate my social media more and more over the years.
    • How to make every single day you coach a little bit better!
