The Super Duper Mash-Up Episode (Winter 2025)

My friend it has been a CRAZY couple of weeks.

Short week last week with the holiday.

Short week THIS WEEK because I’m speaking at Andy and Luka’s Built to Last gym mastermind here in Nashville.

And believe it or not I was actually supposed to go out of town last week to onboard a new athlete, but he unfortunately got hurt – so I do get a little bit of a break.

So needless to say there’s been a lot going on, and that’s why I opted for a super duper mash-up episode for this week.

As I was prepping the show notes I was reminded of how many great guests I’ve had on lately, so I really hope you enjoy it!

This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast:

    • Courtney Delks on the questions to ask yourself and be intentional every day
    • Brady Howe on the various practitioners who can help with mental health and wellness
    • Joel Smith on the benefits of a mixed-methods approach to jump training
    • Erica Mulholland on fueling strategies for young female athletes
    • Christina Chu on supplements you should probably save your money on
    • Andy McCloy on hiring people and building culture
    • Jim Stoppani on caffeine intake and pre-workout supplements
    • Ken Vick on the differences between shocks and springs
    • Dr. John Rusin on the difference between coaches and fitness “influencers”
    • Dave Gleason on why young athletes should sample many sports growing up

Level Up Your Exercise Selection and Technique with Whatsthatstrap!

Are you looking for ways to coach more effectively while cuing less?

Or getting your clients and athletes into the right position WITHOUT overwhelming them with 35 cues every set?

If so, you need to check out Whatsthatstrap!

What’s That Strap makes specialty cable machine attachments that are specifically designed for rotation and multidirectional movement.

The 3D Strap is amazing for driving separation between the hips and shoulders like you would in tennis, golf, baseball or even basketball, but it can also be used to resist rotation in standard weight room exercises like squats and lunges as well.

And while the 3D Strap is awesome, I also find myself using their chop handles all the time as well. Whether it’s for exercises like chops and lifts, or just using them as a bonus sled dragging attachment, I absolutely love their versatility.

To learn more about Whatsthatstrap or pick up a 3D Strap or chop handles, head over to WhatsThatStrap.com and use the discount code RTS at checkout to get free shipping on all US orders.

I know you’re going to love training with their attachments!

The ACL Comeback: Rehab, Reconditioning & Return to Play with Dan Lorenz

It seems like every day, we’re talking about a new athlete with a torn ACL.

Whether it’s the professional, collegiate, or high school ranks, it feels like torn ACL’s are now the rule versus the exception.

And while we can’t outright prevent these injuries, we can maximize any athletes comeback after they’ve happened – and that’s what we’re going to dive into today!

Dan Lorenz is the Director of Sports Medicine at Lawrence Memorial Hospital and OrthoKS in Lawrence, KS where he also serves as Program Director for the LMH Sports Physical Therapy Residency.

Over his distinguished career he’s also worked in the professional ranks for the Chicago White Sox, the Kansas City Chiefs, and in 2018, was recognized by the NSCA as the Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation Professional of the Year.

And in this episode, we’re going to take a deep dive into optimizing ACL rehab!

    Quotable Quotes:

For every month you wait past six months, your risk of re-tear goes down 24% with each successive month.

Nothing ruins a great surgery more than bad rehab.

You have to trust the process. You have to do what is asked of you and make small goals.

It’s not about the calendar like timeframes. It’s objective criteria that you meet to pass.

This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast:

    • Dan shares his journey from a suburban Chicago upbringing to becoming a sports med director.
    • Why you shouldn’t rush into surgery after an ACL tear, and why pre-op treatment is so important.
    • Dan’s thoughts on various ACL grafts, and the ones he’s seen the most success rehabbing.
    • The difference between medical and physical clearance! (This is so important, PLEASE listen to this section if you’re coming back!)
    • Opening the lines of communication between the athlete, parent, physician AND rehab professional to achieve a great outcome.
    • The role BFR training can play both in ACL rehab, as well as for the older athlete with joint degeneration.
    • Why BFR is a great modality when mechanical load drives an increase in pain or symptoms.
    • Thoughts on ACL timelines and recovery – why every athlete is different and why waiting/slowing down could be the best thing you do!
    • The mental aspects of recovery, and why we need to think about an athletes fear of re-injury and the importance of mental readiness.
    • Finally, Dan’s advice to parents: “Don’t rush it,” underscoring the importance of patience in the recovery process.

10 Tips to Become a Happy, Healthy, and More Successful Coach

I’m not joking when I say this podcast could easily be the most important thing you listen to this year.

Seriously – the advice I’m going to give you in this episode could easily be worth tens of thousands, if not HUNDREDS of thousands of dollars.

Unlike a lot of the influencer fitness pros and online “mentors,” I’m still working with and connecting to real coaches everyday.

And in this episode, I’m going to share the most common issues that real coaches like YOU are dealing with every single day.

So while they might not ALL apply to you, I guarantee a few of these are going to hit home.

    Let’s do this!

    Quotable Quotes:

Start with lifestyle design first. Your career should follow your lifestyle, not the other way around

    —–

If it’s not a yes right now with enthusiasm, then it’s definitely gonna be a no down the line

    —–

Be reflective of the impact you make on people’s lives every single day

This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast:

    • Why starting with the question “What kind of career do I want” may be the WRONG QUESTION.
    • The power of living beneath your means (especially when you’re starting out).
    • Arguably the most important non-training book you’ll ever read (don’t worry – it’s linked below!)
    • The power of your coaching inner circle – and how to starting growing it today.
    • Thought experiment: Are you taking care of yourself like you tell your clients and athletes to?
    • Why you should seriously consider outsourcing certain elements of your health and wellness.
    • How to recover like a pro.
    • Are you a people pleaser? Trying to change your ways? If so, learn how I’ve started saying “No” more.
    • Why I’ve tried to curate my social media more and more over the years.
    • How to make every single day you coach a little bit better!

Eamonn Flanagan on Building Fast, Explosive and Robust Athletes with Plyometric Training

If you’re looking to learn more about jump training, plyometrics, or simply want to help your athletes get more explosive, you’re going to LOVE today’s episode

Eamonn Flanagan is the Lead Strength & Conditioning Consultant with the Sport Ireland Institute where he leads the physical preparation of Ireland’s Olympic and Paralympic athletes.

Eamonn has also been the Head of Performance Support to a number of Olympic and Paralympic sports over the past 3 Olympic cycles.

And in this episode, we’re going to take a deep dive assessing, coaching and programming plyometrics in your training sessions!

    Quotable Quotes:

It’s really important that athletes develop the ability to create or to manage force eccentrically at high rates and with big magnitudes.

    —–

I think loaded jumps are really valuable, but I think loaded jumps get really useful when you manipulate the exercise itself to do something that you weren’t able to do otherwise.

    —–

I think the important thing is that you have a long-term plan, either as a strength and conditioning coach, a sprint coach, etc.

This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast:

    • Eamonn’s journey from a young rugby player to a leading strength and conditioning coach in Ireland.
    • The importance of understanding different strength qualities in athletic training.
    • How Eamonn’s experiences in the U.S. shaped his approach to sports science.
    • Jumps vs. Plyometrics: What’s the difference? And why should we care?
    • Why the CMJ is such a valuable test…
    • …yet why we SHOULD NOT use it to test everything!
    • A battery of tests Eamonn might use to evaluate his athletes
    • The significance of eccentric impulse in enhancing athletic performance.
    • A simple (but not easy) question: When is an athlete ready for plyos?
    • AND does the 2x bodyweight mantra carry any weight?
    • Why you might consider using weighted jumps in your programs.
    • Last but not least, general volume prescriptions to help you write better programs and meet clients/athletes where they’re at!

Whether it’s writing hundreds of articles for websites like T-Nation…

…creating books SO LONG the editors cut you off at 576 pages…

…or educating over 20,000 fitness professionals, there’s only one word I can use to describe today’s guest…

    prolific.

Dr. John Rusin is an internationally recognized strength coach, physical therapist, and injury-prevention expert with nearly two decades of elite-level experience training MLB All-Stars, NFL All-Pros, Olympic gold medalists, and world-record-holding powerlifters.

And today we’re going to take a deep dive into helping YOU optimize your training!

    Quotable Quotes:

The key ticket to you being successful as a coach is your clients and your athletes being healthy

    —–

If you can create content that helps 80% of people, 80% of the time, you’re absolutely killing it out there

    —–

We are the summation of all of our life’s experiences and our careers experiences

This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast:

    • John’s background, and how he got started in the physical prep space.
    • The importance of maintaining health and longevity in fitness training.

    • How John’s personal approach to fitness has evolved over the years (i.e. how he still stays in phenomenal shape!)
    • A really important question: Can you train every day without crushing yourself? Or burning yourself out?
    • Why every coach should value continuous learning, and why we MUST adapt our training methods over time.
    • And last but not least, should men actually train more like women?!?!?!

Ken Vick on Extensive Pogos, Deep Tier Plyos and Building Real Eccentric Strength

Today – my friend – we’re going to touch on ALL the hot button topics.

For instance, are we potentially missing the mark with our eccentric-focused training?

Putting an over-emphasis on extensive jump training?

Or maybe, just trying to figure out where the heck do deep tier plyos fit into the equation?

Ken Vick is the President and Global High-Performance Director of Velocity Sports Performance, and someone I know is ALWAYS thinking about training and how to optimize it.

And in today’s episode we’ll cover all those topics – and so many more!

    Quotable Quotes:

Eccentric actions in sport are the most important in my view. They can give an athlete an advantage or they can cause damage

    —–

You just put a huge engine in without any brakes. If you’re not training through eccentric actions, you’re missing the brakes

    —–

Watch sports looking at it as a movement specialist. What are the movement patterns and what are the muscle actions that go along with that?

This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast:

    • Ken’s journey from Olympic weightlifting and track coach to high-performance director.
    • The Shocks/Springs model, and how they relate to human movement.
    • Are slow, controlled eccentric exercises with light weights giving us the training adaptations we want?
    • The value of understanding the force/velocity curve – and never getting too caught up on one side of it!
    • How Ken uses medicine balls in his training programs.
    • Why it’s so important to watch sports as a movement specialist – and not as a casual fan of the game!
    • What role should isometrics play in training? And especially with regards to tendon loading programs?
    • Ken’s thoughts on both extensive pogos and deep-tier plyos, including where they might fit into your program.
    • Final thoughts on building frameworks, systems, and why every coach should work with (or at least watch!) sports they don’t coach.

Dr. Jim Stoppani on Pre-Workouts, Creatine for Cognition, and Navigating the World of Supplements

Supplements are such a hot topic these days, I just had to do another show on them.

For instance, many of us need a little pick-me-up before we train – but are the pre-workout mixes on the market any good?

Creatine is obviously a hot topic as well, especially with regards to muscle building and now cognition.

But how much do you REALLY need to take to see the benefits?

And last but not least GLP-1’s are all the rage in the weight loss community. But are they something YOU should be considering?

Well luckily for us, we’ve got a world-renowned expert to help us answer these questions!

Dr. Jim Stoppani is a Yale-educated PhD who has devoted his life to studying exercise, nutrition, and supplements.

And in this episode, we’re going to take a deep dive into the world of supplements!

    Quotable Quotes:

I’m a firm believer in creatine enhancing your cognitive performance as well as the muscle performance

    —–

If you’re not used to caffeine and you take a 500 mg dose, it’s going to ruin your day.

    —–

You should be expecting something that’s going to enhance your performance, not how you feel

This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast:

    • Dr. Jim Stoppani’s background in exercise physiology, strength training, and how he got started working for Weider Publications
    • Why he’s so obsessed with understanding strength training and bodybuilding all the way down to the molecular level
    • Pre-workout supplements: What should you be looking for? And what should you avoid?
    • His thoughts on creatine for both building muscle AND cognitive performance.
    • How he feels like programming should evolve as you age, and some insights into what he does with his own workouts
    • GLP-1’s – are they worth all the hype? And should we change our viewpoint on the role they play in weight loss and long-term health?
    • Why social media is so hard to navigate, and his thoughts on finding credible fitness information amongst all the noise
