Ep 336: A Bunch of American Soccer Topics with Paul Spacey

Can coaches be “honest” with players and families, and more broadly is there honesty in the American soccer ecosystem?

I’m joined by Paul Spacey, who I first met over 10 years ago soon after he arrived from England.

Now with over a decade of working in American soccer, he shares a good number of lessons learned.

    Topics in the episode include:

    • Honesty with players/families?
    • The authority of the English accent.
    • Challenges with starting and operating a club.
    • Are parents the problem, and how can they discern truth from BS?
    • US youth soccer consolidation.
    • Promotion and Relegation.
    • The problem with “journalists”.
    • On coaches being rich and maintaining ones motivation to coach.

Ep 335: Pro/Rel and MLS’ Assault on the US Open Cup with the OG himself, Ted Westervelt

The following episode features Ted Westervelt, regarded by many, including myself, as one of the originals who have been advocating and educating about promotion and relegation, both in the United States and abroad, for well over a decade.

As you’ll see in this episode, he is very well-versed in the subject. And despite some suggesting that this topic has been thoroughly discussed, it has only just begun, ladies and gentlemen. There is much misunderstanding, and the complexity of what promotion and relegation actually entails runs deep. Hint: It is not merely a league format.

This conversation took place just a few days ago, on the eve of an escalating conflict between Major League Soccer and its attempts to undermine the U.S. Open Cup, the country’s longest-standing tournament with over 100 years of heritage.

And guess what? It is connected to promotion and relegation. The fact of the matter is that due to the absence of promotion and relegation, and instead the presence of a single entity, MLS, LLC, monopolizing the entire ecosystem, that monopoly power is now tarnishing our Federation’s reputation. The Federation, which is meant to advocate for all constituents in the American soccer ecosystem.

This includes you, parents of a 7, 12, 15, or 18-year-old child navigating their way through the ecosystem. It includes you, the coach of a youth soccer team, and all the struggles you face. It includes every soccer club and youth league in the United States, along with all associated businesses off the field. All of them are directly impacted by these issues.

So, hang on tight, and let’s listen to Ted Westervelt.

Ep 334: Be Smart with this Incomplete Notion of “Just Let the Kids Play”

Before the start of our weekly business meeting, John Kokkoris and I had some soccer small talk regarding this misguided notion of “let the kids play”.

It was stimulated by the following comments made by the Argentine National Team manager, Lionel Scaloni.

“There’s an excess of analysis, too much. Nowadays, everyone knows how the opponent plays; there’s so much information that, in the end, the most important thing, which is the player, is almost remote-controlled. In our case, I don’t know about other teams, but there’s a risk of losing the essence, taking away from the player what is precisely their best quality. If you’re constantly telling them what to do, you run that risk. We convey just enough, what we believe we need to transmit, the truly important things, so as not to overwhelm them with information. We are losing the essence of football, not only at a professional level but also with kids. My children play in Spain and are overwhelmed with information. They receive the ball, and they’re already being told what to do.

“There are fewer dribblers because if they barely get the ball and you say, ‘Pass it!’… Imagine if Messi, when he was eight years old, had been constantly told by his coaches to “Pass it!” We wouldn’t have him today. It’s impressive. Because football has become such a huge thing, everyone reads, studies, and thinks that with that, they can already manage. If you tell a 7 or 8-year-old to make a diagonal run, cover defensively… He’s seven years old! Let him play with the ball, make mistakes, and when he’s 14 or 15, then we can start correcting. It’s a message for the future. This is a sport, and the beauty of football should not be lost.”

Ep 332: The Ongoing US Open Cup Fiasco, Pro/Rel, and Are There Any Real Clubs in American Soccer?

Truly knowing the landscape at all scales, helps you successfully navigate it.

    On Clubs
A crucial concept often overlooked in discussions about soccer is the absence of what we commonly refer to as “clubs” at the MLS level.

Moreover, this absence extends to the youth ranks. It might seem different from what you’d expect, especially when comparing it to overseas practices. And by overseas, I don’t specifically mean Europe; I’m referring to the global scenario, encompassing over 190 countries. In these places, soccer operates differently, with distinct and separate entities known as clubs.

On Pay to Play and Pro/Rel
One well-known model, which you’re likely familiar with, is the pay-to-play system. Ever wondered why this model exists in the United States compared to overseas?

The root cause lies in the fact that there are no genuine clubs here. This leads us to explore why there’s no promotion or relegation at the youth level a crucial aspect that significantly impacts parents of young soccer players.

Understanding the level of coaching your child receives becomes challenging when there’s no merit-based system in place. We delve into this topic and also address issues with the media in the context of soccer consumption.

On MLS Destroying the US Open Cup
Additionally, we shed light on the U.S. Open Cup, a competition with a century-long history that MLS is attempting to exit, primarily driven by their desire to control everything.

For parents of American soccer players, these discussions directly impact you. It’s not isolated to the professional level; the implications reach down to youth soccer. We start outlining how this affects you and your child.

As we enter 2024, we extend our wishes for a Happy New Year to everyone.

We have ambitious plans to work even harder to support coaches and parents of American soccer players. Contrary to what many in the States will tell you:

A National Team manager does not have to conform to the proverbial “player pool.”

By selecting and elevating players that conform to it, they absolutely can impose their preferred style of play.

Ep 330: On Culture, Japan’s Success, America’s Failure, Neuroscience, Plus Much More with Tom Byer

Today, I’ve got a multi-decade long practitioner based out of Japan, Tom Byer. He’s American, but Japan has been his home for 38 years.

As I was writing this intro, which is the only thing I ever script, it occurred to me: What is a practitioner?

For me, anyway, there’s that cliche of “I know one when I see one“, but I don’t really like that, and I know more clarity can go a long way.

Is it a coach at the pro level, a coach at the elite youth level, a coach at the recreational level, a personal trainer, a scout, an assistant, a technical director, how about a club general manager or chief operating officer? How about a player – is that a “practitioner” in the sense we’re speak of? How about a broadcaster or someone who reports on the game? Is a you-tuber, or influencer, a practitioner? How about some bureaucrat pencil pusher in an office, or lawyer at some club or business?

It starts getting quite murky, doesn’t it?

And because of that, this is a topic I will at some point tackle.

For today, rest assured Tom is indeed a practitioner.

Now, I want to make something abundantly clear:

If one wants to elevate their level of discernment within the totality of a market, one needs to elevate their level of understanding across all aspects of that market. Both breadth and depth, matter.

So for instance if you’re currently concerned with the youth game, you can’t understand it without understanding the pro game. If you’re currently concerned with the pro game, you can’t understand it without understanding the machinations behind it, including youth.

Tom is a practitioner who in my estimation has assessed things on a fairly global scale, and long ago chose to zoom into the very beginning of the player pipeline.

That said, in this episode we touch on a number of things:

    • The tangible impact of culture on how good a player or nation can be.
    • What did US Soccer do, or not do, to place us in these subpar situations we’ve been living with.
    • We also talk about the rise of the Japanese men and women’s programs.
    • Coerver Coaching, isolated training without pressure, and how it is easily misunderstood.
    • What does neuroscience seem to say about development?

    Among other gold nuggets.

Whether we agree or disagree on things, it’s always a pleasure to speak with people who have actually worked within a space, thought deeply and consistently about it for decades, adjusted their priors, had setbacks, retooled, evolved and levelled up. All of course which is part of the journey.

The pleasure comes from sensing they have put in the work, real work, and consequently, that their opinions – right or wrong – are not superficial. Then, for me anyway, it’s pleasurable trying to get to the bottom of why they believe the things they believe.

I think this episode will provide good insight into Tom’s work, and like always, provide gold nuggets you won’t get in the mainstream.

On that note, if you are a coach or a parent of a youth player, it’s important you get legitimate gold in your coaching education or parent education from actual multi-decade practitioners who have done unprecedented work and have been there and done that at every level, from recreational to professional player development. And just as important, that their experience is in the environment you find yourself in, the American soccer environment.

Ep 329: Seeing the American Soccer Landscape Clearly, and the Most Recent MLS/USSF Conflict of Interest

Lifelong American soccer practitioner and entrepreneur, Kephern Fuller, joins me again from Holland.

On September 15, news came out that an MLS owner, Arthur Blank, who operates the Atlanta franchise, was going to fund US Soccer with $50 million in order for them to build a National Training Center in Atlanta.

Kephern then posted the following on X:

“So does no one see the conflict of interest that an MLS owner is funding this National Training Center”?

That post got a number of reactions.

On the one hand, there’s an increasing number of folks who have been around the block here in American Soccer who have come to realize that MLS and the Federation are riddled with “conflicts of interest”. And some have come to the astute conclusion that MLS has, in practical terms, come to capture and control the Federation.

And so this post by Kephern does not surprise a growing segment of the American soccer demographic.

But unfortunately, this post still triggered many folks, particularly those who:
    1) Haven’t been deeply involved or worked in American soccer for long (at least 10+ years).
    2) Have been consistently absorbing deliberately crafted and favorable MLS narratives by MLS media for years.
    3) Need or want to be in the good graces of MLS (for example, “reporters/journalists”).

In any case the implications of an MLS owner funding this Federation project was to be our topic, and it starts in earnest a bit later into the episode. Until then, we were flowing on a wide range of topics.

Per usual, you will get a hefty dose of perspectives you won’t get from the mainstream or elsewhere.

I hope you enjoy and gain insight, but first here are a few words on the products that sponsor this episode and will absolutely help you as a coach or a parent of a player.

Ep 328: Why is the American Soccer Mentality so Soft?

Player attributes are compartmentalized in 4 general attributes:

    1. Technical
    2. Tactical
    3. Physical
    4. Psychological

    They’re all critical.

But that 4th one, man that 4th one is quite a bit different from the others.
It’s tough to put your finger on it.

One thing is certain though, without having the requisite mentality, not only will the player not come remotely close to maximizing the other 3 components and fulfilling their potential, but worse, they could irreversibly limit themselves even to the point of throwing in the towel when certain challenges arise.

With that, it’s interesting to peer into whether something can or can’t be done within their training environments.

Because let’s be real, the strongest of influences on a person’s mentality are almost certainly outside football.

Take a listen to one of the great managers of all time, Arsene Wenger.

I hope you enjoy as exception youth coach and colleague, Joey Cascio, and I explore this area a bit.

Ep 327: From Playing Pro to Coaching D1 College, MLS Academies, and Now Overseas – Paul Holocher is a Reservoir of Experience

The following is a conversation with longtime friend and colleague, Paul Holocher, a former professional player with experience in MLS, pre-MLS, and in Europe when Americans overseas was barely conceivable.

After his playing days, he turned to coaching, starting with youth teams, then coaching Division 1 college soccer back when that was a very big deal. He later worked with MLS academies, and now he’s overseas applying his coaching craft.

Our one-hour chat obviously doesn’t do justice to the reservoir of experience that Paul possesses, but I’m certain there are insights here that can enhance the way you think about things.

Ep 326: On Messi, The Mentality of Players, Suburban Soccer Culture, Pro/Rel, and More

I am joined today from Holland by a long-time soccer friend, colleague, and fellow builder who continues to push the envelope of what’s possible: Kephern Fuller.

After founding a club named Joga SC on the east coast of the United States in 2010 and operating it in the DC area until 2016, he moved overseas and took his business with him.

Kephern and I have had many discussions over the years, and naturally, one recurring theme is the nature of soccer in America. Specifically, that you are not allowed to build your business here as you see fit and have it merit its way in the marketplace. Instead, how far you can take your business is at the whims of a gatekeeper.

Today’s discussion is not really centered on that, though. But rather, it’s an exploration of a variety of topics, some of which include:

    • The mentality of players and how disconnected most of them are from the reality of what it takes to “make it.”
    • Should a young kid be signing with MLS or not? What are the pros and cons associated with that?
    • What do we make of Messi here in MLS and his performances thus far?
    • We talk about the ubiquitous and prolific suburban soccer culture that’s everywhere to be seen.
    • We also address some myths. For example, the idea that we somehow need a hundred years of league history in order to open things up and be great, or the myth that Americans only support winners.
    • We also talk about how magic has nothing to do with promotion and relegation being the solution to all the meaningful problems.
    • And a few other surprises are in store for you.

Folks, it’s a good one. And as usual, yes, believe it or not, all of these things impact you. Having both a broad and deep understanding of the ecosystem enables you to navigate it better.
