Associate Professor of Media & Communication at Miami University Matthew Crain joins Bad Faith to explain how surveillance advertising took over the internet, the threat current monetization strategies pose to journalism, what alternatives exist, and whether there are any real data privacy concerns with respect to TikTok. Matthew reassures Briahna that being a luddite is ok, even as he inches her closer to understanding the internet.

Fordham Professor of African American Studies Mark Naison was once a Columbia student who was present for the occupation of Hamilton Hall back in 1968. He provides context for the protest, how the risk of community outrage helped the students achieve success, and weighs in on the current wave of university protests and the consequences facing his own students at Fordham today. Naison also just happens to be a terrific storyteller who opens the ep by describing how he ended up in one of the most enduring Chappelle's Show segments and what it was like to have Lana Del Ray in his class.

The Intercept’s Prem Thakkar has been covering college campus reactions to Israel’s war on Gaza for months, and he joins Bad Faith to detail how we got to the tumult that has occurred over the past week—snipers on roofs, valedictorians banned, professors body slammed to the ground by cops, and presidential candidates arrested.

Bill Mitchell, professor of economics at the University of Newcastle and the man who coined the term Modern Monetary Theory (MMT), joins Bad Faith to explain how liberals failed to resist the rise of neoliberalism, how conservatives were able to wrest back control after the progressive movements of the first half of the 20th century, and how progressives can offer an alternative critique of globalization that resist both conservative culture war politics, and liberal weaponization of identity politics.

Journalist Zaid Jilani joins Bad Faith to elaborate on his recent controversial criticisms of Matt Taibbi. Are leftists simply angry that they can't control where Taibbi's interests have taken his reporting? Or has Taibbi taken a reactionary approach in response to bad faith attacks from liberals -- and, if so, is he justified? Is the left correct in mourning that, these days, his ample skills are rarely applied to issues that concern the left? Is it fair to accuse him of falling victim to audience capture? Or is Taibbi right that it's important to focus on criticizing liberals because they are, in fact, more dangerous and hold more institutional power than the right?

Intercept columnist and New School professor Natasha Lennard weighs in on the campus battle over pro-Palestine speech and how claims of feeling "unsafe" by pro-Israel students are being used to ban calls for Palestinian liberation. Is the left simply reaping what it has sown in making arguments about speech-related violence on campus? Or are there ways to distinguish real from imagined harms?

Labor journalist Hamilton Nolan joins Bad Faith to discuss the left's shifting attitude toward immigration with respect to the concerns about the impact of immigrant workers on domestic wages. Does defending domestic workers have to come at the expense of immigrants? And does the shift on this issue reflect a larger rightward shift among online left commentators? The conversation broadens to include a debate on whether labor is disempowered by endorsing Biden, the efficacy of the Squad/DSA's electoral strategy, and whether labor organizing can be successful in the absence of true American labor party.

Middle East analyst and co-editor of Jadaliyya Mouin Rabbani joins Bad Faith to discuss his epic debate with politics streamer Destiny/Benny Morris, the post-World Central Kitchen "vibe shift" on Israel, and the gruesome revelation that Israel is using an AI program to generate "targets" to strike while they are at home with their families -- a.k.a. program "Daddy's Home."

In a conversation sprawling over two hours, friend of the pod and preeminent Gaza historian Norman Finkelstein returns to Bad Faith to unpack his recent debate with Twitch streamer Destiny (Steven Bonnell) and historian Benny Morris on Lex Fridman Podcast, the latest on the sexual assault allegations against Hamas, Norm's mother's experience testifying against Nazi Adolf Eichmann, and, finally, Marianne Williamson's recent comments on this show pertaining to criticisms Norm's made of her in the past. Even two and a half hours of recording isn't enough time when Norm and Brie hop on a mic together -- and Brie regrets not closing her Apple Watch rings before she started recording -- but, as always, it was a rich and stimulating conversation. You won't want to miss this one.
