295: Offbeat Escapes: Exploring Contrarian Plan B Locations – Brian Greco
Has your inner contrarian been nagging you to explore some offbeat Plan B expat locations? Today’s episode is just for you, as I welcome my good friend Brian Greco to the show. Brian is a world traveller, market researcher, and internationalization author specializing in exploring lesser-known destinations and finding unique and compelling lifestyle opportunities across the Middle East, Eurasia, Eastern Europe and more. This episode was so interesting and so much fun! Enjoy!

    TODAY’S CONVERSATION WITH BRIAN GRECO

    • Learn how Brian first discovered that the expat life opens up countless opportunities - and how helping others on the journey became a personal passion of his.
    • Uncover the concept Brian refers to as “medium-term travel” - having multiple bases from which to explore the world, and why this concept is so much more accessible to people than being a pure “digital nomad.”
    • Hear Brian and I agree on the value of “slowing down” while travelling and staying in a certain place long enough to start learning the cultural intricacies.
    • How long does it take to “get to know” a city? Brian’s expert insights will give you an idea of how long it takes for a city to become familiar.
    • Discover the reasons Brian has settled on the Eurasia region—including Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa—as his primary focus.
    • What’s the difference between “hard freedom” and “soft freedom?” Learn how Brian uses these concepts as filters to make judgements about how a particular region might meet one’s particular needs.
    • Unlock Brian’s #1 “word to the wise” about how to stay sane and maintain a semblance of personal space while living in a bustling city that never sleeps.
    • Learn about my superpower—the one key attribute that sets me apart from others when it comes to travelling and living in new places.
    • Hear Brian lay out his view of the BRICS nation as not so much a military alliance or even an economic alliance as a greater move away from American/European hegemony around the world.
    • Lastly, you’ll hear Brian break down which countries in Eurasia he plans to explore and which he is the most excited to return to.

294: Mikkel Unfiltered: A Spicy Take On The Expat World
Have you ever wished I would loosen up a little and tell you what I really think? I say this somewhat in jest, of course - long-time listeners know I am not really one to hold back and always strive to deliver my perspective in the most straightforward way possible. But I think you’ll find in this episode that I let loose a bit more than normal as I joined my friend Adam Carswell on his live show “Ancap Radio” on Twitter (or X, which I’ll never get used to saying…). I’m not sure what was in the air—perhaps it was the show's “live radio” format of the show—but I was in a certain kind of mood and really just let loose.  I had such a fun time chatting with Adam and going on a number of rants, so I just had to share this one with you today. There’s even a special appearance from our mutual friend Doug Casey, who, of course, Expat Money Show listeners are more than familiar with.  Enjoy this one - we sure did!

I can honestly say this was one of the more enjoyable appearances on another show that I’ve had in quite some time. So often, I get asked the same questions over and over, and Adam is just great at keeping things conversational and really bringing out the rants that have been bubbling inside of me. 293: What’s It Like To Work With Mikkel?
What’s it really like to work with me? That’s exactly what my colleague Marc Clair asked several of my clients and partners last month during my 41st birthday bash in Panama. This came at the tail end of our Panama Expat Exploration & Investment Tour, where I spent the week helping clients craft their own Plan B, whether it be residencies, citizenships, or simply investing internationally and protecting their wealth.  People often ask why I have spent so much time and resources building this company when I could easily retire on the beach somewhere and spend the rest of my days staring off into the sunset. Aside from the fact that I am simply not built that way and would completely lose my mind, you’ll see from these testimonials today what it’s really all about.  More people than ever before are awakening to the threats to their freedom and wealth, and I am truly blessed to have the opportunity to help others dramatically improve their situation. In today’s episode, you will get a glimpse into what it’s really like to work with me, craft your own Plan B, and protect yourself and your family from the machinations of corrupt politicians around the globe.  Enjoy!

    CONCLUSION

I hope today’s episode gave you a taste of not only exactly what I do when working with my clients and partners but also helped you understand my motivation for doing so. The truth is, I could retire today, but building this company that is actively helping people's lives is a giant puzzle that I’ve been determined to solve. I have built an absolutely incredible team here that makes so much of the content you see possible, and I do it all in to find more people like those you heard from in today’s show.  This work never stops because there will never be a lack of people needing to shelter their wealth and protect their liberty from greedy, tyrannical politicians. Luckily, I never plan to stop, either, so I thank you for being part of the ever-growing expat community.  See you all next Wednesday!

292: From IRA To International: Investing In Foreign Real Estate With SDIRAs
Are you an American with an IRA (Individual Retirement Account) loaded with mutual funds, investing in the incredibly shaky foundation of the U.S. stock market? Today’s episode is just for you. This week, I am going to share a recent webinar I held where I invited our new partner, Matt Calhoun from Equity Trust, to discuss how to take control of your retirement with a self-directed IRA and share strategies for using one to invest in foreign real estate. This really is a can’t-miss for my American friends.

TODAY’S PRESENTATION ON USING SELF-DIRECTED IRAS FOR INTERNATIONAL REAL ESTATE

    • Tune in to meet Matt, who was referred to me by a trusted real estate partner as the “best in the business” when it comes to understanding American retirement accounts and foreign real estate.
    • Discover how Matt first became interested in the niche area of self-directed IRAs after previously being involved with more conventional mutual funds.
    • Learn how a self-directed IRA is unique from most in that you can direct and manage your own portfolio, including the type of assets you invest in.
    • Uncover the wide variety of assets that you can own using self-directed IRAs, from precious metals to cryptocurrency to international real estate.
    • Do you already have an account that can fund a self-directed IRA without your realizing it? Find out the most common ways to fund self-directed IRAs.
    • Learn the differences between a “traditional IRA” and a “Roth” IRA - and the tax implications of each. This knowledge is absolutely crucial for understanding how to use these types of accounts to your benefit properly.
    • Discover the very few types of assets that retirement accounts are prohibited from managing. Cross these off your list of investment ideas for IRAs.
    • Hear about the most common mistakes people make using self-directed IRAs so that you don’t make them yourself!
    • By the end of this episode, you will know everything you need to know about using your retirement account to purchase international real estate and protecting yourself from a coming stock market crash.

    CONCLUSION

I am always harping on the fact that the stock market is about the most dangerous place you can have your money right now, so much so that I have nearly divested myself of stocks completely as the world continues to move away from the dollar and the U.S. economy rests on shaky ground. It’s crucial to act now to protect your wealth with overseas investments.  While this episode won’t necessarily apply to my many listeners from Canada, Australia, Europe and all around the world, stay tuned because we are actively working to put together information about how to utilize retirement accounts from other countries as well. But I’ve had so many American friends and clients asking me about this that I just had to share it, as there are just too many great opportunities out there not to take advantage of if you have the means.

    CONCLUSION

As you can tell from this conversation, Joshua is incredibly knowledgeable about education. Most of his knowledge was acquired directly through the education of his own children while travelling the world. As an unschooling father myself, I have gleaned so much knowledge from Joshua’s experience. This conversation went so well that it kept going close to another hour, which we will present to you this Wednesday in part three of my discussion with Joshua Sheats. See you then!

288: Update: Why I Don’t Take My Foot Off The Gas
In today’s episode, I’m going to provide an update on everything that’s been going on over the past few weeks, culminating with my birthday party here in Panama that saw over 200 like-minded people coming together for an incredible celebration. Prior to that, we had a week-long investors tour in Panama, which began just as I was coming back from a trip to Turkey.  As you can tell, it’s been a busy few weeks, but they’ve also been incredibly important. With how fast things are changing in today's world, this is no time to take the foot off the gas—it's time to accelerate, and that's exactly what you'll be seeing my team and I do this year. Today, I’ll share all the details and preview a bit of what the Expat Money team and I have planned for the year ahead.

    TODAY’S UPDATE EPISODE:

    • Listen in to hear about my trip to Turkey to finalize renovations on the home that we recently purchased in Istanbul.
    • Learn about the recent investors tour we held in Panama prior to the party, where clients of mine came down to view some of the absolute gems of real estate deals that are brewing down here.
    • Find out why this will probably be the last of these investors' tours in Panama for a while and what we plan to do next year in its place. It’s going to be even more exciting!
    • Hear the details of the upcoming Luxury Expat Exploration and Investment Tour in Paraguay. Many of my clients have become interested in this country lately, and we’re going to spend nine days exploring in style.
    • Listen to the breakdown of my 41st birthday party - from the food, fireworks, and festivities to the amazing conversations with friends and clients.
    • Find out why it’s absolutely critical that you act RIGHT NOW to get Panama residency by investment before the minimum investment nearly doubles this year. Don’t hesitate & reach out to my team today to get started.
    • Learn about the easiest way to make your real estate investment in Panama - our Panam Fly ‘N Buy Tours, where you’ll have all your expenses paid when you come down and purchase your property here in Panama.

    SAVE THE DATE

The team and I have already decided that instead of an investors tour next year, we’ll be hosting a conference on Friday followed by a Birthday party on Saturday. So SAVE THE DATE for March 14-16, 2025, and I hope to see you there!

In today’s episode, I’m going to introduce a new segment in the show, one that my team and I have been talking about internally for a while, that will be known for now as “Expat News.” The idea is that every quarter or so, as I’m reading the news or going through government websites and I see changes to immigration and programs and things that affect the offshore and expat space, I’ll do one of these episodes breaking it all down.  So enjoy this premier edition of Expat News, where we’ll discuss a number of stories from the wave of migration from Canada to the popularity of Panama’s investment visa to El Salvador’s interesting - and pricey - citizenship program. Enjoy!

286: Untracked: The Role of Freedom Tech In Personal Security – Seth For Privacy
Today’s guest is Seth for Privacy. Seth is a freedom maximalist and privacy advocate. He is the head of strategy and content for “Foundation Devices,” which builds Bitcoin-centric tools that empower you to reclaim your freedom. He also serves as the editor for Freedom Tech, a global hub championing Bitcoin builders, open-source developers, educators and privacy tech pioneers.  Seth and I have a great discussion about the various freedom technologies available to increase your privacy. Enjoy!

TODAY'S CONVERSATION WITH SETH FOR PRIVACY

    • Listen in to find out how Seth first took an interest in privacy issues while working for a cybersecurity firm when he realized the technology he was working on could be used to oppress humans.
    • Hear how Seth started writing and podcasting about freedom issues in order to right some of the wrongs he had contributed to in his career.
    • Learn why Seth believes that free and open-source privacy tools are vital in protecting one’s privacy from both government and corporate spying.
    • Find out why Seth believes Bitcoin to be a core technology when it comes to privacy and security but why Bitcoin alone is not enough.
    • Hear Seth and I discuss the importance of self-custody when it comes to Bitcoin to fully utilize it as “Freedom Money.”
    • Listen to Seth unveil some of the easiest “levers” people can enact right away to increase their own privacy.
    • Learn why Seth is opposed to “privacy maximalism.” Just as I say, there is no “Shangri-La” perfect country out there; the same holds true for privacy technology.
    • Find out what Seth thinks of the popular privacy-centric messaging apps like Telegram, Signal and Simplex - are some better than others?
    • Hear Seth explain the importance of an “always-on” VPN - a simple tool that, while sometimes creating a minor inconvenience on some websites, presents a huge privacy upgrade.
    • Seth and I discuss our philosophy on how to decide when trade-offs in privacy are worth the gain in productivity or security.

    CONCLUSION

It was great talking to Seth about the various technologies available to enhance your privacy in today’s digital age. Just as there is no “Shangri-La” perfect libertarian country out there, similarly, there is no perfect technology. Ultimately, the decisions you make in regard to how much privacy you are willing to give up in order to make your life or work more convenient.  I have to make these decisions every day in my business, and the answers will look different for everyone. Hopefully, today’s discussion with Seth will continue to broaden your knowledge of the types of technologies available - and the rest is up to you! See you all next Wednesday for another Expat Money Show.
