It's easy to overlook the passion of each of the types when we are thinking in terms of instinctual sequences or cultural influences on personalities. But the fundamentals of the Enneagram are crucial to understanding ourselves, our motivations, and how we interact with others in relationships.
Today we are sharing our very first episode, Getting Started: The Nine Types. We hope you get some new insights discovering the fundamentals of the Enneagram of describing the nine types.

Most people use the heart center superficially, meaning they use reactive and conditioned emotions, like an emotional reflex. In this episode, Beatrice Chestnut and Uranio Paes go through each of the nine types and describe ways in which all Enneagram types can Activate their Heart Center and truly feel the four core emotions: fear, anger, sadness, and happiness. Activating the Heart Center is important for all types, including Heart types. It’s a sign of emotional maturity. It is when someone can deeply feel a range of emotions rather than disconnect from them, avoid them, or express them reactively.

Every Enneagram type has a head center. While types Five, Six, and Seven overuse this center, the Body and Heart types underuse it.
In this episode, Uranio Paes explains that the majority of people use the most basic part of the lower Head Center too often and during inappropriate times. It is the mechanical part of the brain that is used to memorize information without critical thinking or reasoning. In this mode, people are vulnerable to confirmation bias because anything that challenges the current way of thinking is avoided. Uranio describes the phases of developing the Head Center and how it can test our understanding of the world around us.
Also, this episode’s Top Five is light-hearted. It is the top five most interesting things that Uranio Paes noticed about Beatrice Chestnut.

We are not our personalities. However, when we are unaware of our lower selves, it’s easy to identify with our personalities. In this episode, Uranio Paes goes through each of the nine types to give examples of how to fool the personality so that we can be free from its hold on us.
Each of the nine Enneagram types has an over-developed Center of Intelligence. Uranio talks about The Fourth Way, an approach to self-development created by George Gurdjieff. Gurdjieff was the pioneer who brought the Enneagram to the West. He taught that the first way is the way of the body, the second is the way of the heart, and the third is the way of the mind. The Fourth Way is mixing these three Centers of Intelligence so our personality doesn’t control how we react and we can be a more complete human beyond the confines of our personality.

Bea and Uranio interviewed Trent Thornley, a Self-Preservation Six, to find out what helped him in his growth journey and to learn about how he experiences his Enneagram type and subtype. He talks about how he came to the Enneagram. He discussed how the Enneagram gave him Ah ha moments as well as uh oh moments. Trent discussed that all nine types have needs, it’s just that there is an over-functioning or over-dependency on the needs of each Enneagram type. He shared there is a false sense of security in the act of doubting. There is an unconscious idea that constant doubting will bring the Self-Preservation Six to a conclusion that will bring the truth of the matter and more importantly, security. How does he work through this false idea?
This is a powerful interview with many insights for those who are Self-Preservation Six subtypes or have Self-Preservation Six subtypes in their lives.
Trent served as President of the International Enneagram Association in 2022 and 2023. He is the Executive Director and Director of Clinical Pastoral Education at the San Francisco Night Ministry and an ordained Buddhist Dharma Leader in the Nyingma lineage. Trent is also an ordained minister in the Metropolitan Community Churches, a progressive Christian denomination with an outreach to the LGBTQ+ community.

It's easy to look at the nine Types when trying to understand how people behave and react in relationships. However, considering the 27 Subtypes is essential to understanding relationships.
Subtypes are not just about the instincts of the individual, but how the instinct interacts with the passion of the type. The alchemistry is what plays out
In this episode, Beatrice Chesnut and Uranio Paes discuss both from the point of view of the person with a subtype and how another person may experience the person in a relationship.
They even give tips on how to interact with each subtype in a relationship.

In the Enneagram, Arrows and Wings are central to understanding how the symbol can be used as a tool for personal development. In this episode, Beatrice Chesnut and Uranio describe the Enneagram not as a static symbol, but as a symbol in movement, using the teachings from the philosopher George Gurdjieff.
There is an order that each type can take that eases the challenges the ego will face when evolving into a higher self. They explain how to discern between positive and negative movements towards wings and arrows, and why a balanced approach is necessary.
