The important things going on in hairdressing.
Carley Bayne, owner of Carley Bayne Hair and freelancer Francesca Harrison are friends and colleagues in hairdressing in their home area of Epsom, Surrey. They join Respectfully host Lauren Stone to discuss how rewarding it is to shape your working life to suit your desire for a work-life balance.
Carley Bayne has worked in West End London salons her whole career and recently decided she needed to make a change in order to have a family and be a working mother. She has now built up a clientele in her home area in Epsom, Surrey to be now able to make her own salon. She now works one day a month, and employs her own team
Francesca Harrison had been working in London at Vidal Sassoon, until the Pandemic forced changes. She says she ‘fell into’ the world of being freelance and now works at Hunter collective three days a week, and works with other teams in her home area for the remainder of the week, including time with Carley in her salon.
Carley Bayne, Francesca Harrison and Lauren StoneWhether for family reasons or for the freedom, Carley and Francesca are pleased with how they can now shape a working career to suit their needs. Along with host Lauren Stone – also a working mother of young children – they talk about how to manage their workload around their desire to maintain a work/life balance. Working mothers, or keen to remain free to walk when they want and how, this is an in-depth at how we can evolve the traditional work ethic to be more modern. They consider how salons can take into account the pressure and dynamics of hairdressing in 2024. This is an enlightening conversation at a time when we are all focussed on staff retention. This is a great conversation about the changing expectations of employees and anxiety about staff retention.

Tom Smith joins the Respectfully podcast host Nicky Pope for a conversation about having a portfolio career in hairdressing! They chat about how to find a great balance in what you pursue including session styling, salon work and being a brand ambassador. Tom shared his views on working with the owner of a salon to create a mutually rewarding way of running a client list while undertaking roles away from the salon. As an educator, innovator and sessionista with many calls on his time, Tom has great advice. Growing a massive Instagram following has been important in creating his personal brand. And, Tom also explains to Nicky how he has carved out a reputation for trends forecasting.
A hairdressing conversation round the kitchen table!Tom Smith trained with Vidal Sassoon – where he initially focussed on being a colourist. He credits his time at the company with his discipline and understanding of taking a holistic view of each client service such as considering the texture of hair at all times. Going on to practice cutting skills to balance his considerable technical knowhow on colour, Tom now is more than competent to deliver a complete service on all hair types. Based for the past 13 years or so at Billi Currie salon in central London, Tom is able to purse a his ‘portfolio’ style hairdressing career thanks to the open-minded and supportive attitude of his bosses Billi and his wife Debbie Gee.
Tom tells the Respectfully podcast how he has become interested in product innovation – being one of the first adopters, and ambassador, for Olaplex. He has also been working with the Australian brand Evo, and travels extensively delivering education around the world.

Welcome to the new series of Spring podcasts for 2024! We open with a retro look at one of our earlier recordings. In 2021 we hosted a podcast recording with Jo Irving and Oliver Blackaby. A hairdresser, salon owner and business coach, Jo had been working with Ollie on how to focus on his mental health whilst also launching his first salon. The Hair Salon in Hove on England’s south coast is now three years old, and going well. Now for this new series of podcasts, Jo and Ollie return to tell Respectfully podcast host Nicky Pope how they continue to work together. Their mutual respect for one another is uplifting, and each guest has a lot to share about the value of business coaching in today’s world.
Jo Irving is a salon owner and professional business coach and a personal coach. In the conversation, she explains her personal journey to build a career and safeguard her own wellbeing. She has recently returned from a one month mediation training in Bali. Jo also hosts retreats, and you’ll hear her explain the value of gifting yourself time to focus on what you want from yourself and your business in a safe space.
Oliver Blackaby is celebrating three years of The Hair Salon, a 10-chair salon which he shares with a group of freelance hairdressers. He is open and honest about the process of business coaching and speaks eloquently of his time on a recent retreat in Dorset, hosted by Jo Irving. Today Ollie is so confident of his business that he can spend time away from the salon on projects including a podcast The So Lovely Talk Show which he presents with Siobhan Jones, and building his own education platform.

Trevor Sorbie MBE invited us into home to meet his wife Carole and dog Lisbon, and of course to share stories and reflections on his life in hairdressing. Chatting in his studio in December 2023, Trevor is now retired from seeing clients in the salon, and entertaining thousands of hairdressers with his celebrated shows. But he remains very much engaged with the industry. He works closely with his artistic team (Trevor Sorbie International has six UK based salons), led by Giuseppe Stelitano the creative director at @trevorsorbie and continues to run his My New Hair charity work.
In our podcast recording, guest host Charlotte Cave reminds Trevor of his great achievements, from training with Vidal Sassoon through to opening his own first salon in 1979. They talk about the industry in the UK both over the past 50 years and today. Charlotte herself owns two London salons and first met Trevor when he was the one to announce her first award win some 20 years ago. The pair cover lots of ground including questions submitted to Charlotte from many of Trevor’s erstwhile proteges including Sally Brooks, Angelo Seminara and Tom Connell. You’ll learn a lot and be thoroughly entertained.

Salon owner and Kerasilk educator, Taz Daddi-Addoun joins Ellie Scott to discuss the skinification of haircare. A hot topic in the industry right now as we see more and more hairdressers comparing haircare routines to skincare routines (after all our scalp is just an extension of our face right?) Taz talks about the treatment menus he has introduced to his salon and how brands such as KERASILK and KMS are supporting this.
You may remember Taz from when we last spoke in the Summer – HERE
Hairdressing since 2010, Taz started his career by working weekends in a salon. He grew a love for the craft and knew he would wan to open his own hair salon one day… A few years on and Birdcage Hair Salon was born. Based in Burton Latimer, the salon has a team of creatives who consistently bring great hair.
A master of his craft, Taz has been invited to work on set for photoshoots, take part in global hairdressing contests and work backstage at London Fashion Week. He has worked closely with brands such as Goldwell and KMS at events such as Salon International.
Just over a year ago Taz was recruited as a KERASILK educator where he helps stylists in other salons grow their knowledge and confidence with the brand and products.

Hairdresser and salon John Gillespie joined Respectfully host Nicky Pope for a conversation about the changing needs of the hairdressing industry. How can professionals adapt in marketing, services and communication with clients? John has a powerful proposition with the UK launch of the Salon Suite model of business. As managing director at Phenix, the first-ever Salon Suite in the UK, John heads up a brave new project for our industry. His mission is to empower others to build their own successful businesses in beauty and hair. With 38 years experience, he’s well placed to do this.
During the conversation, John shares with Nicky news of the new Phenix Salon Suites company and how this rolls out in the UK.
Following the resounding success of its first UK venue in Manchester, Phenix Salon Suites, a flexible workplace for hair and beauty professionals, is set to open a new site in the heart of Birmingham city centre. The building comprises individual units which can be hired on short term arrangements, and used exactly as you wish.
With no long-term contracts or hidden costs, hairdressers and barbers will be provided with a backwash, styling chair and hair trolley, while nail artists, beauty therapists and aestheticians will be offered sink units and storage trolleys, plus a treatment bed.
Tenants can furnish their own rooms (with plumbing/backwash in each) while shared facilities mean client comfort is taken care of. Phenix – an American based company – offers advice and education which tenants may tap into without obligation.
In addition, each tenant will also have access to a break room/kitchen space, as well as an on-site laundry room with free use of commercial equipment for fast washing and drying, as well as secure 24/7 access via an intercom system.
The conversation on the podcast is enlightening and well worth listening to.

Joe Hemmings, salon owner and leadership coach, talks to Respectfully podcast host Nicky Pope about how to be a great leader rather than just a good manager. There is a difference in inspiring and guiding your team as a leader, rather than focussing solely on management and operational issues. It’s a fascinating conversation and you’re sure to be intrigued.
Having founded the Bristol-based Bloggs salon group in 2010, Joe added a second site in 2017. His approach to business has shifted dramatically over time; from being what he calls ‘lead by numbers’, to being ‘lead by emotion’. In 2018 he instituted practices such as flexible working hours, closing on Saturdays, uncapping commission structures and more. It was a fortuitous piece of ‘future-proofing’. As the Pandemic hit, the Bloggs brand survived when otherwise it might have struggled. Listen to Joe’s story, and learn how he went on to establish his Honest Salon Leadership model. He’s ready to share his ethos and approach to leadership. As the name suggests, it’s honest, open and very practical. From social media to strategising, Joe has lots to reveal. Listen to his conversation. It’s very provocative…in a good way.
