--- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/carolinaweather/messageThis week, WCNC Charlotte Chief Meteorologist Brad Panovich talks about two very important, and yet very different, topics: The cicada emergence and a destructive severe thunderstorm in Rock Hill, South Carolina. This year will have the return of two different broods of cicadas, the Periodical Cicadas, also known as Brood XIX or Brook 19. They return every 13 years and are expected here in the Carolinas.Elsewhere in the United States, Broox XIX, which returns every 17 years, is also returning.A lot of headlines are emphasizing this return of two different cicada broods with phrases like "cicada invasion" or "cicada apocalypse." Many news stories give the false impression that the two types of cicadas will be appearing at the same time.As Brad Panovich explains, unless you live in a few very specific locations, you are unlikely to experience both types of cicadas. (Of course, even just one type of cicada can be loud enough. Just as the people of Newberry County, South Carolina: https://www.wltx.com/article/news/local/cicadas-noise-complaints-newberry-county-south-carolina-bugs/101-d1dbb836-6a68-438a-8813-700d7a61e5f2) Brad write's more about the cicadas here: https://www.wcnc.com/article/weather/weather-iq/millions-of-cicadas-return-after-13-years-in-the-next-few-weeks/275-b664824b-858a-43d6-b893-e5959771890eBrad also shares his eyewitness account of devastating storm damage in Rock Hill, South Carolina. A supercell thunderstorm impacted York County, South Carolina on April 20 with 90-mph winds and baseball-sized hail. Brad visited the neighborhoods hardest hit by the severe weather and talked with experts, including the National Weather Service and the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) about what they saw.The thunderstorm, which was found not to have produced a tornado, produced the largest hail either Brad or the Carolina Weather Group's Frank Strait can recall ever seeing in the Carolinas. Frank, who is from Rock Hill, shares his thoughts on the severe weather damage left behind in his hometown. #northcarolina #southcarolina #weather #ncwx #scwx ๐งข MERCH: https://rstrm.io/e/YDmSpk ๐ธ LEAVE A TIP: https://streamelements.com/carolinawxgroup/tip ๐๏ธ SUBSCRIBE TO OUR PODCAST: https://anchor.fm/carolinaweather ๐ SUPPORT US ON PATREON: https://patreon.com/carolinaweathergroup ๐ป VISIT OUR WEBSITE: https://carolinaweathergroup.com The Carolina Weather Group operates a weekly talk show of the same name. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/carolinaweather/messageChris Jackson is a South Carolina-based storm chaser and a trained first responder. On April 13, 2020, he chased severe weather as it raced across his home state. The early morning event was a continuation of what became known as the Easter tornado outbreak of 2020, which caused damage across much of the South before coming into the Carolinas. In South Carolina, there were 5 EF-3 tornadoes, 2 EF-2 tornadoes, and 1 EF-1 tornado in Central South Carolina and East-Central Georgia, causing 2 fatalities and at least 7 significant injuries. On this episode of the Carolina Weather Group podcast, Chris Jackson shares his story of chasing the storms, reporting tornado damage as a SKYWARN spotter, dialing 911 to alert authorities of an emergency, and rescuing a couple from their storm-ravaged home. By the time the severe weather outbreak was over, Chris visited Williston, Neeses, Livingston, Estill, Nixville, and Walterboro, all in the state of South Carolina, to survey the storm damage. During the course of the tornado outbreak, the National Weather Service in Charleston, SC issued their first ever Tornado Emergency, which is the highest and most severe classification of a Tornado Warning. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/carolinaweather/message#space #science #eclipse #northcarolina #southcarolina #weather #ncwx #scwx The Monday, April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will cross North America, passing over Mexico, the United States, and Canada. Unlike 2017, the totality will not pass directly through the Carolinas. But still, at about 80% totality, there will still be some solar eclipse to experience in both North Carolina and South Carolina - weather permitting. This week on the Carolina Weather Group, James Brierton talks with Gina DiBraccio, Deputy Director of Heliophysics, NASA GSFC, about what we can expect to see, how we can prepare for the eclipse, and the scientific discoveries that are made possible by a solar eclipse. We also discuss space weather, solar storms, and the impacts of solar radiation on technology such as GPS and radio communication. Still need solar eclipse glasses? In this episode, we explain how you can make solar eclipse glasses at home. You can also reuse your glasses from the 2017 Eclipse or check retailers. While demand for the eclipses will be high, checking with unconventional retailers like video production stores or a hardware store may help. For example, B&H will ship you solar eclipse glasses (while supplies last) from https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/buy/solar-eclipse-glasses-accessories/ci/32948. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/carolinaweather/messageNOAAโs National Weather Service (NWS) has provided manual translations of weather forecasts and warnings in Spanish for the past 30 years, but now the agency has a new tool to be more accurate, efficient and equitable.ย
Through a series of pilot projects over the past few years, NWS forecasters have been training artificial intelligence (AI) software for weather, water and climate terminology in Spanish and Simplified Chinese, the most common languages in the United States after English. NWS will add Samoan and Vietnamese next, and more languages in the future.ย
Two of the nearly dozen locations where these AI-translated severe weather bulletins are being tested are in the Carolinas. This week, James Brierton talks with Chris Rohrbach, a meteorologist and web developer at the National Weather Service in Columbia, South Carolina, where this artificial intelligence experiment is being tested alongside locations such as Greenville-Spartanburg, SC.
Youโre invited to try out the translated severe weather bulletins at https://weather.gov/translate. NOAA wants your feedback. You can e-mail [email protected] before September 29, 2024.
