CM023: Telemedicine and Compliance with TJ Ferrante

Today I am talking with T.J. Ferrante. T.J. is senior counsel and a board certified health care lawyer with Foley and Lardner. I asked T.J. to come on the show because he is an expert in the legal and compliance issues associated with telemedicine.  The use of telemedicine has exploded over the last few years and I think these issues will be relevant to so many of us in compliance.

T.J. can be reached at: [email protected]

CM022: Changing the Perception of Compliance with Jay Anstine

Today I am talking with Jay Anstine of Bluebird Healthlaw Partners. Jay is a lawyer and compliance officer and we are going to discuss strategies you can use to engage with leadership and be seen as a partner as opposed to an obstacle (or as my colleague described it a few years ago, a myopic obstructionist). Jay has some very practical suggestions for building rapport and building relationships to help remove some of the perception that compliance is a barrier to operations. I will include all of Jay’s contact information in the show notes which you can access through your podcast app or by going to the podcast website, compliancemastermind.com. Jay has a great weekly newsletter that you can sign up for on his website so definitely check that out.

CM020: National Practitioner Data Bank with Sharon Peters

Today on the show I am talking with Sharon Peters. Sharon is a partner in the Portland office of Lewis Brisbois and is a member of the firm’s Healthcare and Labor and Employment practices. Sharon and I are talking about the National Practitioner Data Bank (NPDB).  The NPDB is a web-based repository of reports containing information on medical malpractice payments and certain adverse actions related to health care practitioners, providers, and suppliers. Established by Congress in 1986, it is a workforce tool that prevents practitioners from moving state to state without disclosure or discovery of potentially damaging performance issues. With the increasing focus on quality care and patient safety I think this is a very timely topic and Sharon provides some great insights.

CM019: Accreditation and Compliance with Fran Carroll

Today on the show I am talking with Fran Carroll. Fran is the Corporate Compliance and Privacy Officer for the Joint Commission and we are going to talk about something that was confusing to me as a young compliance officer and is still an area of opportunity for most health care providers, and that is the relationship between compliance and accreditation.

Fran provides an interesting perspective about the synergies and potential ways to leverage the expertise of both disciplines and I think our conversation will help identify some possible improvements that may be helpful in your own organization.

Marti is the Vice President of audit strategy for CynergisTek and has more than three decades of operational and executive leadership experience in the fields of compliance, research, and regulatory oversight in both academic medical and traditional hospital care settings.

In our conversation Marti provides some very practical suggestions and tactics to help you evaluate your organization’s vendor relationships and ensure that you have the appropriate controls in place.

CM017: MACRA, MIPS, and APMs: What The Acronyms Mean For Your Compliance Program

Today we are talking all about value based care and alternative payment models. The transition from payment for the volume of care provided to payment for the value that care brings, is here to stay and as compliance officers we need to get our arms around these new payment models in order to determine how they impact our organizations and our compliance programs. So today I’m going to talk about where to begin. First we'll discuss how to evaluate the compliance program requirements associated with value based care and alternative payment models, and what steps you need to take to ensure your program addresses the risks and program requirements associated with the programs. And second, I am going to identify ways to help take your compliance program beyond the core components and identify strategies and opportunities for operational integration.

CM016: Social Media with Janet Kennedy

Today on the show I am talking with Janet Kennedy about social media. Janet is a social media expert, has over 20 years experience in marketing and is the host of the “Get Social Health” podcast. She is also the founder of the Get Social Health Academy, a coaching and eLearning consultancy producing online courses for Healthcare Associations, Medical Societies, and private practices.

I loved my conversation with Janet because we talked about some of the compliance aspects of social media, but also how social media is being used in healthcare. We talk about who is using social media well, what lessons can be learned from social media gone bad, and what we should be communicating with employees about using social media.

CM015: Big Data and Data Analysis with Chris Haney

Today I am talking with Chris Haney about Big Data and data analysis. This is another topic on my 2018 bucket list of areas that have intimidated me in the past. The good news is that Chris is an expert and explains these concepts in a way that non-statisticians can understand.  This episode provides a great overview of data in healthcare and how we can utilize data analysis in our compliance programs. Chris talks about prioritizing our data analysis, proactive versus reactive approaches, and the role of statistical sampling.

Chris Haney is the Managing Director of the Forensus Group specializing in financial investigations, forensic accounting and statistical sampling analysis. Previously, Chris led investigations at a global consulting firm, and was a Forensic Accountant at the Federal Bureau of Investigation specializing in complex white collar and healthcare violations. You can learn more about Chris and find his blog on statistical sampling and analysis on his website: http://forensus.com

CM013: The Intersection of Cybersecurity and Compliance with Donna Grindle

Happy New Year everyone and thanks for joining me for the first episode in 2018. One of my goals for 2018 is to tackle subjects that have intimidated me in the past, see if I can get some clarity, and begin to feel more confident about my knowledge of those topics. Today is one of those episodes, so if you’ve ever been somewhat intimidated by cybersecurity, I think you are really going to enjoy my conversation with Donna Grindle.

Donna is the founder of Kardon Compliance and also the co-host on the Help Me With HIPAA Podcast.  If you haven’t personally been impacted by a cybersecurity breach, I am sure that you know people who have. It seems like every week we hear about another data breach and it’s not just big health systems, physician practices, imaging centers, health insurance companies, and even Medicaid programs. No organization is immune. Cybersecurity is a huge risk for organizations and it makes sense to not only tackle the issue from a technology perspective, but also on a personal level because it only takes one employee to respond to a phishing email to expose an entire organization. Donna knows her stuff and shares some great information and strategies for compliance officers.
